About to adopt a stray - fleas?

Long story but there's a local stray ive decided to adopt. It's a case of catching him first. As soon as he's caught he's going to the vet, but may not get an appointment for a day or so.

In the meantime he will be in my house, presumably with fleas. The vet won't give prescription flea treatment without seeing him first and I would like him treated for fleas straightaway. My plan is to buy flea treatment over the counter somewhere so that I can treat him ASAP ...

Question is, what is the most effective over the counter flea treatment I can buy? There are lots of different ones. I would prefer prescription one straightaway but clearly that's not possible! Any recommendations please ?? Thank you!

I've got loads of spare avocate, I'm on holiday at the minute. But could send you some when I get home.

Angel2702 · 27/07/2021 11:17

Advantage is best over counter one.

NigellasGuest · 27/07/2021 11:20

@Toddlerteaplease that's really kind but I think it would be too late - the cat visits a lady every day and she's planning to shut the door next time he comes, which could be today! I'm on tenterhooks waiting for the call 🥴

Advantage is good then? I will check if pets at home sell that and take a trip. Can anyone else vouch for advantage?

Ah ok. But I've you've not managed it by Monday, let me know.

NigellasGuest · 27/07/2021 11:22

Thank you 😊

Yes, you need Advantage. It's the only OTC treatment that works. I don't think Pets at Home sell it. You can get it online and in large chemists.

BridgetInHerBravery · 27/07/2021 14:54

Yes to Advantage, and a Drontal worming tablet too. Both cheap online.

dementedpixie · 27/07/2021 14:55

Think pets at home do sell advantage as I'm sure I've seen it in there

This is timely - our cat is only ever in our garden or next door, but came in the other day with a scratch on her nose, and when brushing her tonight I found two insects which I assume are fleas! (She’s white so they were easy to spot.) She caught a mouse that same night, but I wonder if she also cane into contact with another cat. She’s always in overnight but right now would be in the garden 24/7 if we let her.

I have ordered the Advantage treatment. I assume we need to treat the house, any tips? I’ve washed her bed and all the sofa covers/our bedclothes at 90.

She seems absolutely fine in herself, no scratching. I’m worried she is in discomfort but she doesn’t seem distressed at all. I feel like a negligent cat owner but DP says I am worried over nothing!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/07/2021 01:03

Here’s the little fleabag. I am calling her the hostess with the mostest.

Advantage and Frontal is the way to go. I get both on internet and you can get a regular supply delivered with good discount.

StealthRoast · 28/07/2021 02:02

Sorry op I’m almost falling asleep and read it that you’re about to adopt a flea Grin

Your cat is absolutely beautiful!

PurpleSapphire · 28/07/2021 02:17

Another for advantage here, nothing else seems to work.

NigellasGuest · 29/07/2021 17:01

@StealthRoast that's not my cat Grinbut he is gorgeous!

Update - cat still not caught BUT I have managed to get a different vet to give me prescription flea stuff for when I do get my paws on him hahah

She gave me Stronghold Plus - is this good? I assume so as it's from from vet??

Sorry, OP, I rudely gatecrashed your thread in a flea panic. That is my cat who has now been treated with Advantage and hates us quite a lot right now between that and the endless hoovering.

I hope you get your furry fleabag soon!

thecatneuterer · 29/07/2021 18:28

Stronghold Plus is very good, and also treats most worms.

@Judystilldreamsofhorses For the house you need Indorex or Acclaim.

Beamur · 29/07/2021 18:32

My vet prescribes Stronghold.
Indorex for indoors.

NigellasGuest · 29/07/2021 20:24

@Judystilldreamsofhorses not at all - all flea discussion welcomed!

I don't think I will get him back anytime soon - people in the area have put out countless traps and no luck! Anyway I'm prepared for when he is finally captured ....

NigellasGuest · 29/07/2021 20:42

I will be sure to update .... 🐈‍⬛

Is he definitely a stray OP? I ask because I thought I would take in a stray who my very aloof cat was friends with. I took him to the vet to be checked over (I wanted to make sure he didn’t have fleas) it turned out that he was chipped and had been missing for 6 years. His family were overjoyed to have him back. My DCat misses his little friend.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/08/2021 21:03

Sorry to be a party pooper but why do you think she’s a stray? She looks well fed and in great condition.
