Getting a kitten! What do I need?

hi,
I'm getting a kitten in a few weeks once it's old enough. It's a few years (lots) since i've had a cat. I've got a wee list of what I need - but what have I forgotten?? It's so GORGEOUS!
Thank-you!

litter tray & litter
cat food bowls/water bowls
cat food
cat bed
cat toys
register at vet

The idea about double sided sticky tape sounds great. Does it leave sticky marks on the furnishings though?
Following this thread with interest as I'm hoping to collect our new kitten on Sunday

WhereDoILook · 15/07/2021 19:35

@dancemom

A second kitten to keep it company
This! When I worked in rescue we only homed to a house with another cat or them going as a pair.
TheQueef · 15/07/2021 20:11

For sticky tape, buy two rolls of half decent double sided, stick it on everything you hold precious.
Doesn't have to be stuck especially well, just enough to piss them off for two weeks. By then they will have chosen a new victim.
It looks a mess but it's only two weeks plus you can target tape any bits that crop up.
If you are worried about the surface don't stick firmly.

Keep hold of boxes.
Saves a fortune on beds and toys.
Fluffy bath mats double up as litter trays, watch out for micro turds.

GoodVibesHere · 15/07/2021 22:09

I just want to say that you don't necessarily need two kittens - one kitten can be perfectly happy as an 'only'.

Our one seems extremely happy, and was pretty confident and calm from the day we got her (9weeks).

We play with her with feather-stick things, she loves her toy mice and her cat tree. She sleeps well at night, eats well, is affectionate etc.

Please come back and post a pic once your kitten arrives 😁

MushMonster · 15/07/2021 22:14

Two much much better than one.
Scratch post, or the cardboard ones.
Mine ignore them, and just acratch the sofa and carpet, but maybe you are lucky!
In future, cat flap.

Twokitstwokats · 15/07/2021 23:54

Lots of money! We got rescues and within a few months will have paid
Money to the rescue centre
Deflea the house and cats
Worming tablets
Vaccinations
Check up
Neutering
Insurance
Cattery for a week away
Catflap

They are absolutely lovely and ask for nothing but many hidden costs!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/07/2021 08:18

Perfect. But make sure it's a white/palest lemon/pink jumper for a black cat

Ah that's where I've failed dismally , no cashmere .
Male cat makes do with our lovely white bedding instead and floats upstairs to hold the filth in his toebeans to deposit

We had a house rule that anyone had to knock before coming into the room where they were (in the first week) , the door to the garden needed to be stealth opened and double checked to see where they were .

And my carpet is a sad memory of itself

butteriesplease · 16/07/2021 09:07

ok, so kitten is black and white, so that will show up nicely everywhere! Scratch posts etc, all good. I'm excited!
Am worried about my christmas cactus - it is older than me, is massive and has huge sentimental value as it's older than me and I inherited it after mum and dad passed away. Aside from rehoming the plant, any way to protect it from kitten claws?
Get kitten (yes, from someone trustworthy etc) in mid-late August - will post pics then! Currently it's a small ball of cute fluffiness!

My last cat loved the Amazon boxes and paper packaging and u gave away one bed that he never slept in and don't agree with Grumpy it was scary

I've recently bought these two things, amongst other stuff. The cat tree has been repositioned three times and the dining room is being renamed cat tree room

Endless patience, a warm lap and the ability to not get upset when they shred your favourite sofa. 😂

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/07/2021 09:18

Cat tree
Another kitten Grin

GuppytheCat · 16/07/2021 10:40

A black and white fluffy kitten, you say?

Get a RoboVac. We fill ours daily.

Get a lidded litter tray of you do get a robo vac. You don't want to see what a robovac + cat shit does.

Is that personal bitter experience? Shudder…

warmfluffytowels · 16/07/2021 21:55

Honestly, in my experience, you don't need much. I wouldn't waste money on beds - cats will sleep where they please. Mine like the top of the fridge, the NowTV box, the back of the sofa, under the bed, the foot of the bed or in the doorway at 3am Grin

I would get:

Food and water bowls.
Food (whatever the breeder is using at first - you can switch later if you want to).
Litter - whatever the breeder uses at first, then eventually something like Cats' Best which clumps and doesn't smell.
A cat tree/scratching post.
Some flirt pole toys.

Oh my word, but wouldn't three mean more toys
30degreesandmeltinghere · 17/07/2021 09:52

More cuddles. Less soft furnishing damage..
All that toe floof!!
Imagine?!

Happened to my cousin. She cried for two hours. In the end her DP and a couple of his mates did the clean up. Had just decorated front room too. She reckons roomba flipped the tray and set on a deliberate dirty protest. My guess is Simba shat on the doormat again. Put me right off.

I think one cats enough too, not all cats like company.

chickensouporwine · 17/07/2021 14:04

Car beds Grin

We used to run around the house crying they'd got out and we'd lost them, only to find fluff balls curled up inside pillow cases.

Divebar2021 · 17/07/2021 14:04

I re-homed a single kitten from a rescue and haven’t had many of these issues. She was about 12 / 14 weeks when she arrived. She hasn’t scratched any furniture although she’s toppled my fern a couple of times. It can be expensive with the cost of insurance, worm / flea treatments, neutering, vets bills generally ( we have a £100 excess on our insurance), worming / flea treatment and cattery / cat sitters ( about £10/£12 a day in my area). I wouldn’t automatically get 2 without considering whether you can actually afford 2. She goes out so is more inclined to sleep when she’s in. She does sleep in her bed if cashmere sweaters aren’t available. ( she’s light coloured so finds dark colours preferable )

Jingle bell toys and tunnels, mine loves both.
