Grieving cat not eating

Hi all. I posted here last week when my cat was put to sleep after a sudden illness. It seems my trouble is not over yet.

My other cat has gradually stopped eating, prior to my other cats death, her appetite had been reducing, but she was still eating enough to get by. She’s normally a real greedy guts!

She has pretty much stopped eating now, I took her to the vets yesterday, they couldn’t find anything wrong so possibly thought she might be grieving, and gave her a jab of cortisol (cortisone? One of the two) to stimulate her appetite.

She nibbled on a couple of dreamies yesterday that’s all I could get her interested in, and now she won’t eat at all, I’ve tempted her with everything I can think of! Cat milk, dreamies, ham, fish, so in. She just sniffs and looks away. She’s really sedentary as well, she’s usually pretty active.

I’m not sure what to do now, she seems to have hit the self destruct button for some reason and I don’t know whether to take her back to the vets despite no more symptoms or signs of illness and out her through extra stress, or keep her at home and monitor, and if her number is up just make sure she has a few last nice days of cuddles at home. Any advice or good news stories from anyone else would be extremely welcome!

BorahT · 09/05/2021 21:33

Thank you all for your messages, you are all so kind. It’s so sad, I’ve gone from two healthy happy cats bouncing around the garden making their funny little predator noises at birds to two empty baskets in the blink of an eye and I just can’t believe it. I told my 4 year old DS when I came back home what had happened and he was sad and cried and said “I miss both cats now 😣 but they are playing together now!” Which was a lovely thought. They really were lovely cats, I’m going to miss them so much.

We had a memorial for our dcat last week. Buried his ashes under a plant dd chose and placed it on the decking..where his db loves to sunbathe.. May help your dc to do something similar op..

@BorahT - so sorry to see this, your poor cats Sad xx

BorahT · 10/05/2021 07:24

@Aprilwasverywet I was planning on burying them in the garden in a nice sunny spot, underneath a giant daisy plant (as the first to go was called daisy) but I hadn’t thought of doing a ceremony, so that’s a good idea, perhaps we’ll paint a rock a la 2020 to put in front of it. Urgh I’m on the train on the way to work and I feel teary eyed, I’ve got to act like a normal non blubbing grown up all day 😩

It will be a hard day for sure and lots don’t understand how much it hurts.

AlmostSummer21 · 10/05/2021 09:02

((((BigHug)))) I'm so sorry. 🌹

It's a terrible loss one at a time, but both (pretty much) together xxx

Do you have any suspicions who might have poisoned them? It's such a nasty thing to do, I just don't understand anyone who could do it 😢😭

DS is lovely. Hopefully he can hold
onto the image of them playing together.

You're doing well to go to work today, crying is normal, don't worry about it x
