Grieving cat not eating

Hi all. I posted here last week when my cat was put to sleep after a sudden illness. It seems my trouble is not over yet.

My other cat has gradually stopped eating, prior to my other cats death, her appetite had been reducing, but she was still eating enough to get by. She’s normally a real greedy guts!

She has pretty much stopped eating now, I took her to the vets yesterday, they couldn’t find anything wrong so possibly thought she might be grieving, and gave her a jab of cortisol (cortisone? One of the two) to stimulate her appetite.

She nibbled on a couple of dreamies yesterday that’s all I could get her interested in, and now she won’t eat at all, I’ve tempted her with everything I can think of! Cat milk, dreamies, ham, fish, so in. She just sniffs and looks away. She’s really sedentary as well, she’s usually pretty active.

I’m not sure what to do now, she seems to have hit the self destruct button for some reason and I don’t know whether to take her back to the vets despite no more symptoms or signs of illness and out her through extra stress, or keep her at home and monitor, and if her number is up just make sure she has a few last nice days of cuddles at home. Any advice or good news stories from anyone else would be extremely welcome!

@AlmostSummer21 the cats were catching loads of mice lately, I assume rather than it being malicious, some idiot has just put rat poison down and somehow they’ve eaten that, or so many mice that’s what’s done it. I’m trying to think about it that way, it’s too horrible to think someone has done this on purpose. They both had big territories though so it could have been anyone. Malicious or not it really puts me off getting anymore in future in case it happens again 😢

Work was actually a good thing in the end despite being a tough day, it kept my mind distracted rather than cracking up every time I saw something that reminds me of them at home 😣

Thank you again for all your well wishes, it’s nice to be able to talk to people who understand.

You can catproof a garden, when the time comes.

I’ve just come across your thread.

There are no words to make it better - apart from those of your wee boy, bless his little heart.

I am so so sorry - this must be so hard to come to terms with Flowers

I am so sorry OP this is devastating, I’ve had cats all my life from childhood and I’m now 50. Sending you love and strength 🐾❤️🐾

Thanks again for all your messages, this is such a nice board! 💖 I am feeling a little better today, as heartbreaking as it is I am starting to put all their things away, which is helping a bit as I’m not feeling tearful whenever I think about it too hard. I nearly went off earlier when I sat on a furry bit of sofa they had left behind!!!

The little hairy bits crop up in the weirdest of places.

It is a sign that they were there and were loved and eventually through tears you laugh and ask ‘how is that still to be found after 20 hoovers?!’

Wishing you smiles through tears sooner than later Flowers
