How old is/was your oldest cat?

My two are both 12 (same little) and show no signs of slowing down yet. My dog-cat (so called as he follows me around like a lost puppy) is still glued to my feet/lap/head, the other still goes out on patrol 6-7 times a day. But as I reached for the senior food again today I started to feel a bit morbid and worried that we’re in the remaining years now.

I know it varies, but how long did your oldies live for?

(Dog-cat picture attached just because he’s starting to look like a grumpy old man).

Our lovely cat got to 21! Another to 19 and his sibling to 14. Number 3 was poorly since he was a kitten, found very skinny and flea and worm infested, then went on to survive 2 lots of cancer, we were happy he got to 14!

Dog cat is very cute 🥰

Dancingsmile · 05/05/2021 18:51

My childhood cat lived to 18 . My 13 Yr old is still going strong and I still look at him thinking he has years yet.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 05/05/2021 18:53

My last two deceased cats (litter mates) lasted to 17 & 20. Prior to those two, my cats had made it to 14 or 15. Currently got two 10 year olds (and two who are three) so not worried about their mortality yet.

nanny3 · 05/05/2021 18:53

oldest was 25 the two i have now are 9 and 16

TofuDelights · 05/05/2021 19:19

The oldest I had was nearly 21, current boy is 18.5. So you could have many years of being bossed about yet!

Aquamarine1029 · 05/05/2021 19:23

My oldest died at 22. I got her when I was 2 and she grew up with me. I still miss her desperately and I'm 48.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 05/05/2021 19:24

16 years and 3 months to the day. Miss him so much.

midnightstar66 · 05/05/2021 20:10

17 and 20 for my childhood cats. Think you've got a good while yet OP

BigWoollyJumpers · 06/05/2021 14:07

Claudius made it to 21 at which point we had to put him down due to a number of issues. He was a lovely cat, black and white neutured tom, huge, but fit, loving, soppy, a limpit, and still the best cat we ever had..... until perhaps our current Arthur, who is a bit of bastard, but also exceptionally characterful.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/05/2021 19:08

11ish. But maybe older.

LemonRedwood · 06/05/2021 19:11

Both childhood cats were 22 when they died. Currently have one 12 year old and one 7 year old

WorkplaceLlama · 07/05/2021 20:16

Aww, I’m so sorry to hear of all your lost cats but also reassured to see so many of them passing 15 year estimate. I had a lot of poor luck in my childhood cats and many of them met their end through unnatural causes (mostly run over before the age of 5 Sad) so I’ve never had cats as old as this before.

My 1st cat lived to 19, 2nd was 14 and I currently have a 9 month old cat so hopefully a long time with him

KittiesInsane · 07/05/2021 22:06

20 and 17 (littermates). Keep an eye out for thyroid problems — very treatable these days.

hilariousnamehere · 07/05/2021 22:09

My vet told me my six month old rescue kittens were a minimum 20 year commitment, and my best friend's cat passed a couple of winters ago aged almost 19. Mine are 8 next month (also litter mates) and I'm hopeful of at least another 8-10 years based on cats I've known in my life so far!

lorisparkle · 07/05/2021 22:18

My eldest was 24yrs old and his sister was 21 years. We had him from when I was a toddler so I had never really known life without him, It was tough saying goodbye but he had had an amazing long life!

Oldraver · 08/05/2021 11:39

My first was 16, second 14 and the twins (litter mates) were 12. They died within 6 weeks of each other

We joked that the lives were getting shorter but came as a huge shock when we lost Ernie just before he was 5

OwlTwitterings · 08/05/2021 11:40

Almost 22.

OhRene · 08/05/2021 11:49

21, 19 and late teens. My current cat is 7 and I don't know home long I expect her to go on. She's not in ill health or anything, just incredibly stupid. She stands in front of cars on the road and refuses to move, she regularly bolts across roads and likes to annoy dogs by walking up to their fences staring them out, or sits on their windowsills while they go crazy inside.
She only just got away with her hide in tact the time next doors very wound up Jack Russell leapt his fence and IdiotCat had no viable escape route. Luckily his owner managed to grab him off her.

She still hasn't learned and will make a beeline for their fence when she sees the dog is out, just to piss him off.

OohKittens · 08/05/2021 11:51

20 he died curled up in his basket. He was born when I was six the only kitten of our other cat so we had him from day one. I named my first child after him

PhantomErik · 08/05/2021 11:54

16 & 17 for my last 2, my Mum's cat was 21.

My current 16 year old has looked old for years but is still going strong. 15 yr old is starting to look frail Sad

Arbadacarba · 08/05/2021 11:57

The oldest I've had lived to 19.

I still think of him every day.

AGreatEscspe · 08/05/2021 12:02

Mine is also 12, and I get the morbid thoughts too. We got her when she was four, almost five, and the years have flown. So sad to think that in terms of our time with her, assuming a good lifespan, we’re already at the halfway mark Sad

All we can do is love and enjoy them while they’re here.

AGreatEscspe · 08/05/2021 12:05

When we went to the rehoming centre we wanted ‘a cat’. What you end up with is an irreplaceable individual.

My little girl is 22.5. Had her mum who died shortly after birth so reared her from a kitten. She's old but still enjoys playing and is such a happy little thing.. ill be distraught when she goes cant imagine life without her.
