Flea advice pleeease

Hello!
I bought my lovely indoor cat a new bed from pets corner. Turns out they have a returns policy, and since I’ve brought the lovely bed home and my cat loves it; it’s given him fleas.

We used frontline on Monday but he was a wriggler so slightly skewed rather than between the shoulder blades and he did lick a bit off (cue lots of dribbling). Frontline says it should kill fleas within 4 hrs but I’ve just checked him and I’ve still found live fleas. They don’t recommend another treatment for 4 weeks.

Can I do it again? Will it overdose him? I’ve been de fleaing the home like mad I don’t want it to be in vain!!

Thanks

Can I get that from Amazon or does it need to be bought from the vet?

dementedpixie · 09/11/2020 23:10

Think amazon sells it.

dementedpixie · 09/11/2020 23:11

Pets at home seems to sell it too

TwoHoots74 · 10/11/2020 08:13

Ordered from Amazon. It's coming tomorrow. I'll get all my cushion covers off and was then through today too.

I'm really cross. There's so much to do in the house. De flea-ing it wasn't on the agenda!

Ilovemycat13 · 13/11/2020 11:42

I went to the vets with my cat, I couldn’t go in with him but they treated him with broadline not advantage. Two days later and I’m STILL finding live fucking fleas! I’m gonna give it exactly a week and ring them back. I have in the interim been hoovering everyday and cleaning etc. I’ve also been spraying anti bac just all over the house as when we sprayed it before it killed one of the fleas we got off him. Needs must 😂

Are you finding fleas on the cat or in the house? If there is a house infestation then it can take a wee while for them to have contact with the cat in order to be killed. And in the meantime the indorex should help kill them too.

Although broadline uses fipronil for fleas which is what is in frontline and its not always effective now.

dementedpixie · 13/11/2020 11:50

Advantage is an over the counter treatment
Broadline is prescription only and treats fleas and a some worms

Ilovemycat13 · 13/11/2020 12:20

On him. I’ve been combing him when I can. Have yet to see any in the house but I mean are they obvious? We’ve been treating the house too. I wonder whether the broadline will be effective. I hope so, the consultation and the prescription cost me enough 🤦‍♀️

I am having real trouble getting rid of my cats fleas too, if you have any luck @ilovemycat13 let me know! I keep combing her with the flea spray and have done the spot treatment too. Trouble is I have a dark brown sofa and dark wooden flooring so won't be able to spot them if they are indoors, which I'm sure they are.

dementedpixie · 13/11/2020 16:05

What cat flea treatment are you using?

Ilovemycat13 · 13/11/2020 16:07

I used frontline myself @dementedpixie then took him to the vets who used broadline. That was Wednesday and I am still finding live fleas (albeit less).
@KylieKangaroo I know the feeling it’s a bloody awful thing to deal with. I’m just thinking of all the calories I’m burning hoovering everyday! 😂 luckily I’m only a one bed flat but it doesn’t make it any easier especially when the cat doesn’t go out and I can’t really isolate him.
I’m combing everytime he allows me, il flea him again the soonest I can and I’m spraying the house etc. It’s all I can do right now without shaving him and dipping him in hot water and washing up liquid 😂

Wait... indoor cats can get fleas? How?

dementedpixie · 13/11/2020 16:11

Broadline has the same flea ingredient as frontline so if frontline didn't work then I'm not sure Broadline will either. My vet gives Stronghold Plus for mine

DuzzyFuck · 13/11/2020 16:12

@Allamericanreject

Wait... indoor cats can get fleas? How?
From the cat bed that had been returned to the pet shop which the OP then bought? It's right there in the OP...

Cannot recommend Indorex spray highly enough for the house, often hoovering doesn't get eggs out of the carpet but Indorex will annihilate them. As for the cat itself it's just a case of combing, combing, combing I'm afraid.

dementedpixie · 13/11/2020 16:13

Although I was also asking what treatment @KylieKangaroo was using

@Allamericanreject fleas can hitch a lift in on people and their clothing

justleavemebe · 13/11/2020 16:14

You indorex for the house it's the only thing that works.

Allamericanreject · 13/11/2020 16:15

@DuzzyFuck but surely it's the pet shops responsibility to clean/make sure the bed is clear of fleas before someone else buys it?

DuzzyFuck · 13/11/2020 16:15

@Allamericanreject Well yes I'd have thought so too, but what's done is done and now the problem is the fleas.

dementedpixie · 13/11/2020 16:16

There could have been flea eggs that have hatched in contact with the new cat.

KylieKangaroo · 13/11/2020 16:19

I got frontline from PetsatHome but didn't realise it wasn't that effective as people have said on here.

I've also used indorex and now have flea tablets to give her but not sure if that will work or not!

dementedpixie · 13/11/2020 16:28

Advantage can be bought in pets at home and has a different active ingredient than frontline. Otherwise you are looking at vet treatments

Ilovemycat13 · 13/11/2020 17:02

I understand re the broadline, but unfortunately because I couldn’t go in with the cat that’s what the vets gave him. Il go back in a week and request something better if the problem carries on.
The shop are insistent it isn’t from them and tells me it was never returned so 🤷‍♀️ Who knows. But fleas can be carried in by humans. Lesson learnt eh?

ConfusedDotty · 13/11/2020 17:44

Frontline is rubbish, a total waste of money. Even Advantage stopped working on my two cats.

I have now got them on Itch Pet which so far has worked perfectly. I suppose time will tell

Has this year been exceptional for fleas? I have never had a flea problem till this year.

dementedpixie · 13/11/2020 18:40

That's strange that Itch Pet works as it has the same active ingredients as frontline

KylieKangaroo · 13/11/2020 20:01

@confuseddotty it must be a bad year for fleas, it is 2020 after all Grin

My girl is still a kitten really so didn't think I would have to deal with fleas until she was older, my old moggy didn't get them until he was much older!

I wonder if we have a cold snap this winter if that will kill them off? Here's hoping Grin
