If you have more than one cat...

...do they ‘talk’ to each other?

I keep reading that cats only meow to humans so that we can continue to serve them, but one of my cats was definitely calling the other one this morning. She had come in and I hadn’t seen the little one for a while so I went out to call her and the bigger one followed me out and echoed my calls until she came in. I think the motivation was the treat she knew she’d get for coming in rather than a genuine concern for the other cat but still Grin

Some nights I’d be calling my Bengal in & id look down to see him standing beside me looking around.

Pelleas · 09/10/2020 20:35

Unless you count hissing and growling at each other, no.

I say that as the two of them are curled up next to me at the moment, best of friends!

They talk to me, though, especially my boy who is very vocal and has an enormous feline vocabulary.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/10/2020 21:29

If I tell Magic to go and get cheddar in from the garden, she usually produces her a few minutes later. They definitely do seem to be in cahoots sometimes.

NancyBotwinBloom · 09/10/2020 21:41

They don't Miow at each other but they do clean each other and sleep together.

They are both really different. One goes
Out. One stays in. If the one that goes
Out stays out all night, the one that doesn't go out will hiss at him and give him a few swipes as if he's saying "where the fuck have you been"

My cats rarely miow.

Except if I get the dreamies out then they don't shut up.

Beamur · 09/10/2020 21:44

Definitely. My oldest cat had a particular meow to summon our other cat. He would dutifully get up and follow her.
My two youngest cats are sisters and very in tune with each other.

FlyingFlamingo · 09/10/2020 21:50

Oh mine are very noisy. The little one chirps when she comes into the room, she cries when anyone picks her up and she loudly announces a ‘kill’ - in the middle of the night when she brings us one of her toys and we have to congratulate her bravery. The bigger one meows if she can’t find us (generally when we are in bed where we are most nights, we don’t hide from her Hmm) and when she’s hungry. They both meow to demand one of us perform our door opening duties, or if we refuse to stop the rain Grin

I wish mine miaowed more

RickOShay · 09/10/2020 22:00

@NancyBotwinBloom
Get yourself a Siamese Grin

NancyBotwinBloom · 09/10/2020 22:01

@RickOShay

Oh I'd love one. I can't though I have a dog and two cats.

I can't get anymore.

They are gorgeous though and so Elegant and aloof.

RickOShay · 09/10/2020 22:05

You could squeeze in a very small one

Bargebill19 · 09/10/2020 22:07

Yes. Mine call out for each other. (One of them could get lost in a paper bag). Im utterly convinced that cats communicate to each other by other ways than just meowing/chirping. They nuzzle each other and appear to exchange greetings just with a nudge or a look. All of them curl up together (varying combos) and groom each other.
Occasionally a bolshy kitten gets a thump
from one of the older ones too.

NancyBotwinBloom · 09/10/2020 22:17

@RickOShay

Stop I will end up with one and my cats are allowed out of they wish.

I'd have to keep a Siamese in.

I'm having a wine.

I will be onto breeders before the nights out. I'm a fucker for ordering stuff when I'm pissed. Tomorrow I will end up with an appointment to see a cat if you carry on.

QueenOllie · 09/10/2020 22:20

@NancyBotwinBloom I'll pack my black moggy up and send him your way. You'll be returning him in 24hrs Grin he never shuts up

NancyBotwinBloom · 09/10/2020 22:22

I've got my sisters cats living in my garden in a cat house as she is trying to rehome them.

I'm going to end up with five cats at this rate.

QueenOllie · 09/10/2020 22:23

See? This was because I bought a bench to help him get in and out via the window

There is nothing wrong in having five cats. 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

frazzledasarock · 09/10/2020 22:27

Ours do. They have a different lower pitch when they call eachother. There’s different pitches of corn and play I’ve found this feather/toy/socks etc, then there’s a distinct where is everybody plaintive meow when one has fallen asleep downstairs and we’ve all gone upstairs. Then there’s a chirping meow our kits do to our older cats when the older cats hold them down and clean them.
They’ve also got different growls and leaves me alone cross meows.

NancyBotwinBloom · 09/10/2020 22:28

I know but my house is tiny.
I've had five cats before.

It would be very expensive.

Dazedandconfused10 · 09/10/2020 22:29

They chirp at each other but mostly try and take each others legs out when walking past.

longtompot · 09/10/2020 22:30

Mine do a funny meow at each other, like a chirrup meow. They generally don't get on, just tolerate each other living in the same house (but I think secretly they protest too much as I have caught them sleeping on my bed in mirrored positions ;) )

Mine aren't related and are about 8 years apart in age.

frazzledasarock · 09/10/2020 22:31

And ermmm we have five cats 😳

I’m my defence they’re all rescues and I’m always faced with helpless kits nobody loves when I’m very heavily pregnant and at the crying at commercials stage of pregnancy. So I can’t really say no to adorable balls of fluff in need of love.

NancyBotwinBloom · 09/10/2020 22:33

@frazzledasarock
Do you want another two cats?
Grin

NancyBotwinBloom · 09/10/2020 22:34

@QueenOllie

That is such a good pic

DP says we can’t. Mostly as he’s worried the oldest cat will get stressed out by any new cats. He cleans himself bald when he’s stressed.

(I actually would love more cats). 🤫

NancyBotwinBloom · 09/10/2020 22:40

This is my staying in cat. Please don't judge my grey interior Wink
