We welcomed our 10 wk old kittens on Friday. They are gorgeous. They are well behaved. They play. They sleep. They eat. And boy do they poop. And it stinks.....proper stink the whole ground floor out stink. Is this normal? How often do you completely change the whole litter....every day?

What litter tray have you got?

And no you don’t change it everyday. You scoop out the poo and leave the rest

Daffodil21 · 01/09/2020 08:02

Ours was like this for a good few weeks, may even have been a couple of months. It does get better!!!!

custardbear · 01/09/2020 08:02

Get good litter, get a covered litter tray, get odour cover spray, clean it out with bleach and then zoflora so it's starting with no/non urine/poop smell.
Then teach them to pooo outside!

Pebblexox · 01/09/2020 08:03

Oh they're lovely!
No, not every day. I probably fully change once a week (twice if he's having a particularly poo heavy week) but I do scoop out every day.

Mumdiva99 · 01/09/2020 08:06

We have lidded trays with filter. Catsan non clumping litter. We do remove poos immediately.....but they just stinknout the house! Lol.

@Daffodil21 there is hope.....by November..... :)

I always found catsan made the smell worse

wowfudge · 01/09/2020 08:08

Litter tray in a bathroom/downstairs loo at least contains the smell more than having it in another room.

JacobReesMogadishu · 01/09/2020 08:10

You need world’s best cat litter, the red bag one. It’s expensive but the price of having a house which doesn’t stink of shit is priceless. You use less than catsan, etc so it lasts longer.

Tidypidy · 01/09/2020 08:10

Go careful with the Zoflora as it's not great for animals. You can get specific deodorisers for litter trays.

Tigerty · 01/09/2020 08:13

Wood pellets or the crystals are very good at keeping the smell in, much better than catsan type cat litter. Even changing to the clumping variety means that the weed can be taken out easier.

I use this too

I change the litter about once a month with this brand. Still need to scoop but it holds the smell much better

Tigerty · 01/09/2020 08:13

*wees don’t store your weed in the litter tray Wink

DrDetriment · 01/09/2020 08:15

Poo scooped out once or twice a day. Full change once a week. I use clumping litter which has been a game changer as it dries everything out.

DrDetriment · 01/09/2020 08:16

Oh and make sure you have a litter tray for each cat. They don't like to share.

Namechangeforthis88 · 01/09/2020 08:17

I've heard dried food is better as well. We used to give ours the cat version of eukanuba, the name escapes me. And used wood pellet cat litter, which is a bit more environmentally friendly than some of the alternatives as well.

Daffodil21 · 01/09/2020 08:20

@DrDetriment depends on the cats! We already had one cat when we got a second rescue, so we did as they told us and got one tray each plus a spare. That didn't last long as they just shared the same one! I'm not sure our cats are 'normal' though... 😂😻😻

lemorella · 01/09/2020 08:33

Scoop the poop as they do it and a whole change once a day. As they get older the stink does die down. When they get a little bigger get a covered litter tray they really do stop the stink escaping so much.

Justkeeprollingalong · 01/09/2020 08:36

Install a catflap and teach them to poo outside as quickly as possible!

KevinAndHerKits · 01/09/2020 08:38

I find the wood pellet significantly better for the smell

CasuallyMasculine · 01/09/2020 08:40

Don’t use Zoflora. Stick to the products that are safe to use with animals.

Put a reed diffuser high up near their litter tray if you want to try and mask the odour.

Wolfiefan · 01/09/2020 08:42

Don’t use a reed diffuser or zoflora. Not good for cats.
Look at what you’re feeding. We went grain free for dried and bought better kitten food. That helped hugely.

Soubriquet · 01/09/2020 08:54

Zoflora is actually fine as long as you dilute it properly and you wait for it to fully dry before allowing your pet to come into contact with it

RedRec · 01/09/2020 08:56

I just clear out poo as it happens / when I notice, and change the whole tray about every 4-5 days.
I get a really good wood pellet cat litter from Tesco. It smells nice and woody and breaks down to dust. That means you can just pour it out of the tray and it doesn't get caked on the base like others do.

Tadpolesandfroglets · 01/09/2020 09:01

Don’t use Zoflora! Toxic to animals.

mrsgregorypeck · 01/09/2020 09:12

I've had cats for many years but only recently discovered Ever Clean cat litter. It's amazing and seems to wrap itself around ...er... anything in the tray thus eradicating any pong. I've never seen it in a supermarket, unfortunately, but got it on Amazon. Big blue box. It's a bit more expensive but lasts for months because you're not throwing out the litter itself, just clumps. I get the unscented, clumping stuff and will never use anything else now. Cats like it too.
