My black cat has secret stripes

Look! He has secret orangey stripes that only show up in the sunlight....
No idea what colour his parents were as he was abandoned outside a vets... Makes him even more special 😻

I’ve never seen one with stripes.... I’ve just googled and it says they tend to disappear as they get older. Hope not!
His name is pip 😊 he’s had a horrible start to his life but he’s the happiest chilled out little cat regardless

How odd, I was reading about this only earlier today. Look up ‘ghost tabby’ and see if that seems right...

They don't vanish :) one of my previous cats had an amazing set of tabby stripes when they sun shone on him,

My black long hair girl has red hair in the sun. Like a brown burgundy ginger!

My big black furry bugger doesn't have anything as posh as stripes, just blotches. He's 5 now and still blotchy.

My little girl has stripes in the sun. Also her black fur has a shimmer of green in it. Only saw this in the recent sun. So her middle name is now Raven.

My girl has very dark grey stripes, that colour is known as charcoal tabby. Again you can only see them when the light is right, and only really noticeable on her head, legs and tail (ringed, very cute). She's also what's known as Black Smoke, i.e. black cat with white undercoat, as is her brother but he doesn't really have the tabby markings.

If you look very closely at the pic attached, you may be able to see the stripes on her head e.g. forehead and under her eyes...

Just noticed in that pic you can also just see her undercoat where her front right paw is bent

Clearly a tiger that rolls in coal to hide his true colours!!!

Aw she's just a little bitsy tiny girl, only 4.5kg . Now her brother is the real panther at 6kg . Not bad for ex ferals who aren't overweight for their size

My black cat is 10 and has tabby stripes in sunlight. She’s beautiful.

My girl still has her burgundy strips that only show up in strong sunlight - she's 14 now, so not all fade early.

Mine is a tuxedo cat, he still turns red aged 9, you can see them it summer when it's bright sunlight.

i rescued a black kitten only for him to grow into a brown cat. properly chocolate brown, brown whiskers and nose leather, his toe beans are dark pink.

brown cats are uncommon, so he’s even More Special.

Pip is gorgeous. I have such a soft spot for black cats. They are so sweet and just generally groovy!
