I'm falling in love with a stray cat!

His family moved house. Just pissed off and left him. I've seen him around over the last few months and threw him a few bits of ham the other week... then all of a sudden in Tesco a box of Whiskas and a bowl just flew into the trolley. Magic. So now I'm feeding him. He's not letting me stroke him yet but he's coming closer... he's been sat on my doorstep for the last two hours wondering if he should adopt me as his owner. I'm tempted to leave the door open so he can come in but I'm wary of fleas. What do I do? Assuming he's in okay health how much does it cost to take responsibility for a cat? If I take him to the vet what will they charge me?!

He now meows at me... but his meow is VERY croaky? He looks healthy he doesn't appear to be in pain. He's fast and he has a glossy coat etc but this is obviously a concern?

One of my boys doesn't miaow properly. He sounds like a cross between ET & Sweep.

gwhizz75 · 17/04/2020 10:03

Aww he’s gorgeous! I’ve had a couple of cats that get croaky meows now and again, never been anything to worry about.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/04/2020 10:11

He’s gorgeous! Is he any more trusting now?.

Allergictoironing · 17/04/2020 10:14

Mine don't meow "properly". I get squeaks out of Girlcat, & sort of quizzical rumbly noises from Boycat - when they first adopted me, they never made a single sound for about a year. He may well just have a creaky sounding voice naturally, I wouldn't be concerned.

Also, it may sound like that because his meow is a bit "rusty" - sounds like he hasn't had much to talk about lately so he's out of practice Grin

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/04/2020 10:19

@Allergictoironing is right, he’s out of practice. He’ll find his voice again.

TheGriffle · 17/04/2020 10:21

One of mine doesn’t meow at all. The other doesn’t shut up! I love it when a cat chooses you. It feels very special.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 17/04/2020 10:27

YOUR cat is beautiful OP. He is yours, you know, he’s already decided for you.

Or should I say, you belong to him? Grin

EachandEveryone · 17/04/2020 10:31

Has he got a name?

NeverYouMind123 · 17/04/2020 10:36

He has been today for a sniff around but gone off again, maybe he just wants to keep it casual. He comes a little closer and sits by the front door staring at me for a good hour but he won't come in yet.

I'm calling him... Romeo x

awwww!!! I want a cat as cute as that! I'm catless Sad

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/04/2020 10:38

He’s sizing you up though. Sit reading, my guess if you do that he’ll feel safe enough to come in for a nosey round.

Oldestchild90s · 17/04/2020 10:54

Wow he is gorge ❤️

Want2beme · 17/04/2020 10:58

He's lovely. He's got a real shine to him. It took 2 years to "tame" my stray boy. He's now a home boy.

ofwarren · 17/04/2020 11:05

😍😍 he is absolutely gorgeous!!!!

Downunderduchess · 17/04/2020 11:34

Please given him a lovely home. They really repay your kindness tenfold with their love & affection.

NeverYouMind123 · 17/04/2020 13:15

He let me touch his ear 😍

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/04/2020 15:01

Was it soft 😺?.

iklboo · 17/04/2020 15:06

I agree with the just sitting quietly ignoring him type thing. Bet he comes up or climbs on your lap Smile.

Theoldwoman · 17/04/2020 15:11

Romeo is gorgeous, and you are lucky to have found each other.
I hope it all works out.

lifeisgoodmostofthetime · 17/04/2020 16:09

Awww I've been looking forward to seeing him. Romeo is well suited. He is gorgeous and looks so cuddly.

Definitely what the others said. Let him make the move and on his terms. He is warming to you and looks like he's getting a good vibe. Mine took 10 days to come out from under the sofa when I first got them.

Awww I'm so excited for you Smile
Keep us posted pleaseeeeee x

I'm sure Pets at Home do a lifetime vaccination package for around £150.

overnightangel · 19/04/2020 13:44

Romeo is gorgeous

NeverYouMind123 · 20/04/2020 17:01

We are now stroking 😍 and he loves to headbutt my hand 💕

Beamur · 20/04/2020 17:07

Sounds like you two are made for each other.
Cats are generally not expensive pets, but insurance is a good idea as an accident can generate a big bill quickly. Flea treatment, vaccination and food. Plus costs for a cattery if you go away. Plus many toys...
He looks like a lovely cat. Head bumps are an excellent sign.
