Does anyone else’s cat not drink ?

I’m
Beginning to think Millie isn’t a real cat !! She just doesn’t drink . Ever. I’ve tried cold water , Warmer water , water in a bowl next to her food bowl , water in the mornings or evening but , no , never any water ! Can she be real ? Or just a moving ball of pretend fluff ! How can she manage without water ?

One of mine does, the other doesn't. Although I have seen him drinking out of our manky green pond before! The one that doesn't drink eats more wet food than the other so I figure he gets more fluids that way

Theonewiththecat · 13/04/2020 19:04

Does she go out. Cats are gross and quite like puddle water.

Dcat has a cat fountain cos he's spoilt, but I've only seen him use it once or twice.
When dcat had cat cystitis the vet said it was common to not see them drink.

I would leave water out all the time and she will drink when she feels like it.

BentNeckLady · 13/04/2020 19:05

Mine drink out of my pond or the toilet. I’ve stopped even putting water down for them in the house, it’s a waste of time.

Soubriquet · 13/04/2020 19:06

Mine will only drink from the dogs water bowl downstairs, despite having her own upstairs.

She actually winds the dogs up doing it and she knows the devious little shit.

She will side eye them as she saunters to the bowl, licks it and then looks at them with a smug face.

The dogs seethe everytime

OhhhPeee · 13/04/2020 19:07

I’ve occasionally seen our cat licking the tap (eeeurgh!) but she steadfastly refuses to drink the water in her actual water bowl, be it tap, bottled, chilled or room temperature.

I’ve seen her licking dew off grass so I just leave her too it. She’s obviously happier sourcing her own water.

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 13/04/2020 19:08

Dcat here doesn't drink either, or at least not when there is an audience. She does eat wet food though and I'm sure the vet said that would give her plenty of fluid. I'm fairly sure she drinks manky puddle water though as she often stinks and has a soggy chin when she comes in.

slipperywhensparticus · 13/04/2020 19:10

I had a couple that never drank but they ate wet cat food and I left dishes outside for rainwater they seemed fine

The three I have now were a total shock! They drink EVERYTHING shower water I literally turn the shower on first thing and they all crowd in for a drink they have a huge thing that keeps topped up with water (it looks like a chicken feeder to me but for water) they have a cup of water (one cat like to drink high) and the same cat knows how to turn the tap on in an emergency for a drink also

mrssunshinexxx · 13/04/2020 19:12

Mine drinks from the shower tray I think it must be so soapy and grim! Do every few days see him drinking from his bowl and it makes me happy when I see this, in warm weather I put ice cubes in his water bowl and he gets a small amount of milk every few days which he drinks all of

He's spoilt for sure

oohnicevase · 13/04/2020 19:12

If they have wet food they don't need water much. Plus cats love to do stuff they aren't allowed to which Included drinking someone else's water .

Mammatino · 13/04/2020 19:13

I think it’s a pretty common problem, my kitten is very good at water bowls, the old boy isn’t. if you leave a pint of water on the work top he will lap that up, or drink the filthy bits that come out in the plant tray. He loves a good old mucky puddle or a drippy tap too.

ofwarren · 13/04/2020 19:15

I've only seen mine drink water once but she will demolish a bowl of cat milk.

RUSU92 · 13/04/2020 19:17

One of mine eats dry food and drinks a lot. The other will only eat wet food and very rarely drinks from their water bowl. But he will have a go at any glass of water he finds lying around! I think it’s quite common for cats to only drink from puddles/toilets etc Grin

Evennow · 13/04/2020 19:22

Evencat doesn’t drink from his dish at all. I asked a cat specialist vet about it and he said that cats get moisture from grass, drink out of puddles etc. Seems odd but cats just go their own way.

mypoorfurbaby · 13/04/2020 19:24

Cats have a very high thirst tolerance- this is why male cats have issues with urinary crystals.
If you are worried then add extra water to the wet food

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/04/2020 19:36

Mine drank more when I bought a water filter jug.

BikeRunSki · 13/04/2020 19:41

Nice will only drink out of a running tap.
Princess.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 13/04/2020 19:42

Mine only eat wet food, and neither of them drink - I've also tried everything from location, to temperature, to leaving a tap running a little bit.

I know they can drink, because I once caught boy cat lapping the broth from a bowl of noodles my eldest left behind, they just don't seem to be interested.

They pee plenty though. The amount of cat litter I get through is unbelievable.

madrush · 13/04/2020 19:43

mine leaps into the bath and miaows for someone to turn the tap on a dribble for his drink

ALittleBirdhouse · 13/04/2020 19:50

I read somewhere that they like food and water bowls some distance apart. Mine still spurns the water bowl though and laps stagnant water from old flowerpots or whatever she finds lying around in anyone's garden. Yuk. Friend's cat interrupts the washing up to drink directly from the running tap. Yuk again!

Boireannachlaidir · 13/04/2020 19:51

A vet told me once that cats don't actually need that much water so I guess if you're used to dogs or don't know that it must seem odd they don't drink as much.

It is best to always leave them water in a few different spots and always away from their food bowl (instinctively they don't eat & drink from the same spot). They do like running water and you can get them their own water fountain if you're a good cat slave Wink

If they have dried food only they'll likely drink more or you'll certainly notice it more.

Happy to be corrected as I'm no vet! Smile

LynetteScavo · 13/04/2020 19:59

My old cats didn't drink, despite me giving them fresh water every day for 18 years.

The cats I have now do drink occasionally.

Cats don't like to drink water if is near their food because it might be contaminated with rotten meat, or something. I just leave their water bowl on a far corner of the kitchen.

stellarsky · 13/04/2020 20:03

Birdhouse I read about keeping water and food apart and tried it and I have never seen our cat drinking so much since I did that. She even paws the bowl into the room to signal she wants fresh water.

eatanazurecrayon · 13/04/2020 20:13

Both of ours only drink running water. Sink / bath tap but nothing out a bowl 🤷🏽‍♀️

Rookie93 · 13/04/2020 20:13

Like madrush's cat mine will very loudly ask for a drink of running waterin the bath. She'll also happily drink water from my glass on the bedside table, but not my OH's glass - what's that about?

NW2SW · 13/04/2020 20:14

What does she eat? If it's wet food then she'll be getting water from that too.
