I’m
Beginning to think Millie isn’t a real cat !! She just doesn’t drink . Ever. I’ve tried cold water , Warmer water , water in a bowl next to her food bowl , water in the mornings or evening but , no , never any water ! Can she be real ? Or just a moving ball of pretend fluff ! How can she manage without water ?

Keep a cat's water away from its food bowl.

Mine will only drink from the tap in the ensuite, he's shouts loudly until a slave comes and runs it a little for him 🙄

My sisters very spoilt cat has his wet food in the kitchen. Dry food in the living room, but will only drink out of a bowl upstairs on the side of the bath.

Mine have water in a washed out jam jar or glass rather than a bowl.
They also love rain water which I collect in various containers dotted around the garden - yes I am a cat slave!!!

Mine did this, and the vet said they can smell the chemicals in tap water really strongly, hence often preferring to drink puddle water or dew. It's also true that they don't like their water right next to the food bowl, but I can't recall why. If he's going outside he's probably drinking elsewhere.

our DCats have a constantly flowing drinking fountain which they both regularly drink from. expensive but will pay for itself in reduced vet bills if they therefore avoid kidney problems when older.

cats don't like to drink in the same place as they eat - supply water somewhere else that isn't near their food?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 13/04/2020 20:50

Two of ours regularly demand that taps are turned on so they can have a drink. One previous cat would only ever drink from the bidet 🙀. Otherwise it's the river or dirty puddles. Rarely do any of them use their water bowl.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/04/2020 21:23

Mine ha w always been good drinkers. The late fatty used to enjoy drinking my tea if I didn't keep an eye on it.
Have you tried human glasses/cups? Mine have a plastic cup they drink out of.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/04/2020 21:24

My parents cats drinks from the bathroom sink tap. He stands on the sink and yowls for it to be turned on!

duletty · 13/04/2020 21:37

A few times a day my cat meows outside bathroom to drink from running tap. I’m sure it’s something to do with standing water and instinct 🧐 who knows

beaverbill · 13/04/2020 22:46

Mine will only drink from a glass filled to the rim and placed on my bedside table...‘it’s ridiculous.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 13/04/2020 22:49

I'm going to give this glass thing a go. Boy cat greatly prefers my seat when I've just got up, my computer keyboard to sit on, my phone to head but, me to walk over, my pillow to sit on if left uncovered etc. I feel like if I pay a lot of attention to a glass of water by my bed he'll totally be prepared to have a slurp.

I'll filter it too, just for extra luck.

not that I want to be fishing out yet more clumps upstairs/draining yet more pee of the crystals downstairs, but I do want to keep them healthy.

Cats were originally desert animals, so are designed to get by on less water than many others and to extract maximum moisture from their food (e.g. from the blood). That said they do need some water, some cats more than others.

midlifecrash · 14/04/2020 13:26

Mine used to only drink from the kitchen tap. She had to go on wet food exclusively after a hospital admission, and now I never see her drinking water. I leave a bowl for her in the back yard in case. She will drink the juice from a tin of the tuna cat food, or the broth from freshly poached chicken. If it's still warm. Hmm

CharlieAlphaTango drinks from a watering can in the garden. he drinks quite a lot but only occasionally.

Indoors, any water dish will be ignored, but something like a full jar left on the counter will be drunk from if he's thirsty.

I think it needs to be away from the food.
