Fat cat? With picture.

Dcat has just been to the vets for a booster vaccine (sadly couldn't go myself so a family member took him) and has come back saying he's overweight and needs a diet.
Cat has 1 wet pouch a day, half in the morning, half in the evening. And dry food to graze on, eats maybe half a bowl a day? Gets plenty of exercise.
Anyone know how to put him on a diet? Less/no wet food? No dry food? Rearrange the vets so I can talk to them myself?

He's definitely a large cat with a thick coat but I can't say I think he's overweight.

How much does he weigh?

Hard to tell from a sitting down photo. If you look down at him when he's standing up you should be able to get a good view of round he is.

I expected to see a cartoonesque cat also . Will he chase a toy round for you? On a stick, or one of those fish in a bowl things?

Have you weighing scales? (for humans, not baking!)
Step on them with him in your arms, take a note of the weight, then step on again without him. Then google the correct weight for this type of cat.
My two were both overweight last year and for the last 3 mths I've just been feeding then a pouch each morning and evening - no dry food as they have inflamed gums. Both have lost 1.8 lbs and are looking much sleeker.
(all done on vet's advice!)

Ah family member says he was 5kg, and the vet wants him at 4.

Our cat is 5kg and also needs to be 4kg. We have bought him the low calorie version of his usual kibble and it tells you on the packet how much he should have. I've weighed it out and can see how we have consistently fed him a little too much at every meal. It adds up to a fat cat.

@Gingernaut that made me laugh, looks to me like he's on He Chonk level.
I will look into some low fat food, thanks everyone. His healthy sister will be plotting my death.

My one year old boy is 5.5 kg and the vet said he was very healthy. He's quite a long cat, though.

The vet is wrong, he’s perfect in every way.

If you look at the website for what food you've got for him, they should tell you how much cats of different weights should eat. When we put our cat on a diet the vet said we should feed her the amount of food the packets said a cat of her target weight would have e.g. she was 6kg and needed to be 5kg, so we fed her the right amount for a 5kg cat. She lost weight at first but then stopped so we reduced it a bit more (with vet's blessing). We give her dry in the morning and wet in the evening. The wet is 1 pouch so that's easy, and we weigh the dry food on scales.

We tried to put our cat on a diet,it was a right pain. He was howling all the time and just went to all the neighbours houses to eat 😮

I just think he is big boned. He has a lovely big head. So I don’t think he is overweight. I have a very fat cat, but she has teeny tiny little feet so really shouldn’t be as chunky as she is. Her feet just look ridiculous against her frame, like Barbie feet.

We’ve just had ours for her boosters. She’s a Bengal so quite long and weighs 3.8 kg. She was always around 4.5kg when she was an indoor cat but since going out she’s lost a bit.

We had the same. Ours was 5kg and we were told to get her to 4. We tried cutting down food but in the end needed to use the special food from the vet. It worked though although cat still hasn’t forgiven us for the new regime!
It would be worth asking your vet if they do a weight clinic. Ours had a nurse led one which was free and really helpful

Hmmm. He doesn't look a big framed cat from your photo so perhaps 5kg is tad chunky. He is very cute mind!
Our 2yo male is around 4.5kg (hopefully no more) if he was 5kg that would be way too big. I don't want to be a killjoy but like with humans we have lost sight of normal sized cats. Ours was gaining weight a bit too well (vet words)so we gradually reduced his dry food by 1g every couple of days to 5g less per day.
