Cat (still ) always hungry!

I've posted about this previously when we Dcat first moved in about 6 weeks ago.

He's really greedy but that's another story...

Really i just wanted to check i'm feeding him enough as he always acts like he's starving and hasn't been fed for days, it's ridiculous. And he's definitely put on a couple of pounds since he came to us...

He's having a combination of wet and dry food, so now he has half the recommended daily amount of the wet food in the morning (about 100g Carny) and half the recommended daily amount of dry in the early evening (about 35g Applaws). He does tend to have a few treats in between as well

Would this work out? The dry food in particular doesn't seem much but as long as he's getting all of the nutrients he needs it shouldn't matter right?

He'll be able to go outside from next weekend (thank god - he's going stir crazy indoors!) so I'm hoping that will take his focus away from eating quite so much!

I dont measure out food. I leave dry food out all the time and give wet food twice a day. What weight/age is he?

P.s. my cats come and go to the dry food and dont eat it all at once

Has he been wormed? When my cats had them, they were unfillable.
I put pouches down twice a day and dry food is more or less permanently available.

I also leave dry down all the time and give limited wet in the evening. I've found loads of cats need more than the recommended amount of food to stay a normal weight.

Some are just chancers though, my ginger one will meow for more wet food all the time!

We do:
A bowl of dry food down all the time.
A wet pouch 3 times a day

Mine get 1.5 pouches a day between them, and dry down all day which they graze on at will. They are large cats (4.5kg & 6kg) but indoor only.

Maybe he's "boredom eating"?

But OPs cat is only getting a finite amount of dry food down in the evening so maybe he is hungry

He’s 4 and weighs about 5 kg.

I can’t leave dry food down all day as he just wolfs it all straight away...

I doubt he’s got worms as he’s not been out since we got him...

He is however ginger so perhaps they’re just all greedy bastards!

I do a small can of tuna and a bowl of dry food. Why does he only have half the recommended dry food? Maybe give him a bit more food?

I think it's because they give wet food too. Wet food has fewer calories though so maybe increase one or other a little

Mine would raise merry hell if I only gave him wet food and a small amount of dry food!

This is what I was wondering, I am giving half and half but does that equal the ‘right’ amount.

Thing is he is putting on weight, but maybe that’s just from being indoors...

I may give him a bit more dry food and see if he stops begging quite so much

Gosh he’s a lovely little thing! He looks hungry! Is there any reason you don’t give him more dry food? Are you worried about him gaining weight? He doesn’t look fat

I wouldn't reduce dry by half for 1 portion of wet. Do you have a picture of his whole body?

I’ve just thought, are the biscuits made with maize or wheat gluten?. It’s the wrong source of protein and won’t really fill him up.

I have a kitten and 4-6 mths (she's just 5) her food packet suggests 85g wet pouch and 55g dry food per day. Shes got a few dry bits left by morning but not much. Seems happy/fat enough

I think you are underfeeding him.
Those pouches are small and mine can easily eat 2 in one sitting. I try to ration them but he could easily get through 4 a day if I let him, some days he probably does. I also leave dried food out, I would not say he is overweight either.

I don’t think he’s fat (yet!) but in the last 6 weeks he’s gone from 4.5 kg to 5kg, so just don’t want to continue with that trajectory!

My fat cat weighed 5.8kg when we got him.

He's on biscuits only now, Purina pro plan optilight. He loves the food and he's lost half a kilo in 4 months! Vet very pleased and cat looking very healthy.

We put the food in a puzzle feeder which stops him wolfing it, maybe try that?

He’s lovely, I think like others you should give him more food. I don’t think he looks at all overweight. Mine is 6.5 kg and the vet said he’s very healthy

Okay thanks everyone from tomorrow I’ll start giving him more of the dry food .
