Cat (still ) always hungry!

I've posted about this previously when we Dcat first moved in about 6 weeks ago.

He's really greedy but that's another story...

Really i just wanted to check i'm feeding him enough as he always acts like he's starving and hasn't been fed for days, it's ridiculous. And he's definitely put on a couple of pounds since he came to us...

He's having a combination of wet and dry food, so now he has half the recommended daily amount of the wet food in the morning (about 100g Carny) and half the recommended daily amount of dry in the early evening (about 35g Applaws). He does tend to have a few treats in between as well

Would this work out? The dry food in particular doesn't seem much but as long as he's getting all of the nutrients he needs it shouldn't matter right?

He'll be able to go outside from next weekend (thank god - he's going stir crazy indoors!) so I'm hoping that will take his focus away from eating quite so much!

And yes, puzzle feeders, someone else suggested one of those to me, I’ll give it a try. He likes stuff like that anyway

That really doesn't seem like a lot of food.

Our girls are still growing but have 2-3 tins or pouches between the two of them for breakfast and the same for dinner. Plus a bowl of dry food which we top up a couple of times a day so there is always some down for them.

Zooplus has it at a cheaper price

I don’t measure dry food I just keep the bowl topped up through the day. They then have a pouch first thing in the morning and when I get home from work.

Spandang · 06/12/2019 19:57

Is he still a kitten? Ours has dry food all day, a pouch of blink cat food in the morning and again in the evening. Whenever she went through a bit of a growth spurt she’d have three pouches. They do seem to eat more around the 3-4 month mark. She then slowed a bit at 6 months.

dementedpixie · 06/12/2019 19:58

OP says he's 4

BrusselPout · 06/12/2019 20:08

To be fair ours get fed by my OH and when I come downstairs about half an hour later they put on the 'I've not been fed EVER' routine 🤔

jobnockey · 06/12/2019 20:18

I’ve just given him more food cos feeling guilty.. He is still trying to eat lasagne off my plate (it hasn’t even got meat in it) !

I was just going to say give him some food. Why are you so concerned with his weight? Tom's tend to be bigger in my opinion so need more food.

jobnockey · 06/12/2019 20:34

I’m just concerned for his weight from a health perspective I suppose... I don’t want him to become overweight by over feeding him. I’ve found it quite complicated by looking at the various feeding guides how much he should be having which was what prompted me to ask .

His weight will maybe stabilise once he gets to go outside.

A cat does not suppose to have tuna every day

Gonewiththemadness · 06/12/2019 21:51

My cats wouldn’t be happy I don’t think unless there was access to food at all times.
I keep dry food down always and then they get wet food morning/ late afternoon and evening when I’m working and breakfast/lunch and dinner at the same time that we eat when I’m not.
They’re still greedy buggers though and always want to know what else is on offer and go nuts over treat time or a packet of ham!
None of them are overweight although I must be careful as they’re all taking turns I’m being neutered and spayed at the moment which means calorie requirement will go down (we have mum and her 3 kittens who are 6 months old and our boy is pretty much on par with mum size wise already 😳)

dementedpixie · 06/12/2019 21:59

Hope the kittens arent mixed sex and unneutered/unspayed as they can be able to reproduce as early as 4 months. My boys were fine at 4 months

dementedpixie · 06/12/2019 22:00

Says who? My vet says my cat is in great shape on a great diet so I will take her advice over yours

Gonewiththemadness · 07/12/2019 18:51

Not sure if you’re addressing me there @dementedpixie so sorry if I’m answering a comment to someone else!

If to me then yes they are mixed sex (1 boy and 2 girls) but our boy was the first to be neutered at 4 months old and mum has been spayed too now. Our girls are booked in to be spayed soon at the same time and until they’re all done they’re all strictly indoor Smile.

dementedpixie · 07/12/2019 19:06

Ah that's ok then. You hear stories about kittens having kittens so I'm glad you have it all organised

Gonewiththemadness · 07/12/2019 21:50

Yes I was told by the vets during their vaccinations that they could interbreed and young! Being as our boy of the kittens was done first and they’re all indoor for now that took the risk away but mum has had her turn now too, just the 2 little girlies to go!

It definitely makes a difference to weight gain though! I’ve weighed them all this evening as I’m due to collect their flea and worm packages next week and mum has gained half a kg since her op around 3 weeks ago! Our boy has gained 1kg since his op around 6/7 weeks ago.

None of them look overweight at all and mum needed to gain some back after having the kittens and breastfeeding but once they’re all done I may have to take away a wet meal per day down to 2 so they don’t gain too much!
