What inanimate objects bring your cat joy?

Our two cats seem to get joy from the oddest things (besides the usual tin of cat food being opened of course!)

BoyCat loves nothing better than to shred a roll of toilet paper. We've stopped hanging it on the actual holder in the bathroom now, otherwise he'll happily pull it from the roll, shredding it into a million tiny pieces as he goes. (He knows he's not allowed to as you can see by the guilty look on his face in the picture...Grin)

GirlCat has a weird obsession with cotton buds. If she sees one, she'll meow at it until she can get hold of it and chew it. I've had to move where I keep them as she worked out how to open the drawer with her claws and get into the box.

What random things or objects do your cats get weirdly excited about? Smile

One loves foil, mad cat will pounce on his reflection when he sees it and then roll around. The other loves the shelf on the tv stand and will knock all the remotes off as it is His Shelf and anything on it is Evil and must be destroyed.

violetbunny · 20/11/2019 01:34

@spacepyramid The shelf thing is hilarious. Does he actually spend any time on the shelf personally, or just not want anything else to?

The top ripped off a Whiskas pouch. He'll spend hours carrying it around and playing with it.

Troy used to love playing with the plastic that held drink cans together. It got a bit much when he would find them discarded and proudly bring them home.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/11/2019 08:21

The late Fatty adored the plastic thermometer covers we had at work. I'd come home with loads in my pockets. I was absolutely gobsmacked when she leaned to get them out of the bin in my bedroom. Brains were not her strong point! She also loved the texture of towels.
Snorg and cheddar, for some reason love the bath mat. Snorg gets really excited by it. She looks like she's spraying, but she's not.

Hair bobbles, and one cat loves those bun helper things. She goes all silly if she finds one 😂

BigMamaFratelli · 20/11/2019 08:26

Bus tickets and hair bobbles brought endless joy to my poor departed kitty

CatUnderTheStairs · 20/11/2019 08:26

One cat used to go mad for sweet wrappers scrunched up, as soon as a tin of quality surety was opened at Christmas he was there. And he’d bring in sweet wrappers from outside.

Other cat loves, loves. Loves his brush. He will demand to be brushed.

bookmum08 · 20/11/2019 08:33

My childhood cat was obsessed with the little tie tags you get with food bags. She flung them around, chewed them, fling them under the fridge and spend hours trying to get them back out again. We would often have to use a long ruler to rescue the tags from under the fridge for her. Oh the excitement of the kitchen drawer opening and the chance of a 'fresh' tag.
Current cat (my mums) likes ribbons.

bookmum08 · 20/11/2019 08:37

Oh and current cat also loves a good metal comb but she is all hair and not much cat.

ElfrideSwancourt · 20/11/2019 08:37

One of our cats loves Quality Street wrappers and plays fetch with them - at Christmas, every time someone opens the tin she suddenly appears and you have to throw the wrapper for her to retrieve.

Just signed in to post the same thing! One of mine is obsessed with them - she has a big black wire tag that came with something electrical, which I have to rescue from the cleaner each week so she doesn’t throw it away!

I also find my pink/yellow ear plugs all over the house if I don’t put them out of sight! Boy cat loves them.

If ever I get a happy meal with a soft toy in it I give to to him too. He proudly brings me a little seal beanie baby most evenings!

And I’m the morning he’ll lick my mattress - the rough sound of his tongue reverberates through it to wake me up!

MyDaisyField · 20/11/2019 08:38

A cardboard rocket thing that ds and I assembled months ago. It’s so flimsy and dcat comes crying to me every time it falls over. He can’t fit in it or anything, he just likes to sit next to it and scratch anyone who dares approach the sacred rocket.

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 20/11/2019 08:41

Havelock adores the little yellow Velcro collar he was wearing when we brought him home. He plays for hours with it. Then manages to lose it for few days. The joy on his face when it turns up would melt the iciest of hearts.
He’s also recently become obsessed with the chandelier type lampshade in the living room and spends ages sitting looking at it and miaowing pathetically. (I have never lifted him up so he can bat at the tempting dangling strands)

Borris · 20/11/2019 08:44

Hair bobbles for my younger cat too

Hattie78 · 20/11/2019 08:44

The bath mat in my en-suite. Both my kittens poggle it and purr like crazy (and usually sleep on it overnight). They also love hiding in boxes and jumping out at one another!

LlamaofDrama · 20/11/2019 08:50

One of mine loves feathers and will spend hours playing with them. When we go away we look for the best ones to bring her back as a present. She took her favourite to bed last night .

The other loves balls of tin foil and Lind'or wrappers. If she hears the Lind'or coming out she comes and waits at your feet and mews till you give her the wrapper.

Dollywilde · 20/11/2019 08:52

Percy loves the little woollen hats that come on the top of innocent smoothies during winter. He also loves the internet router - ours is next to a window and he’ll happily sit on it, warming his bum and looking out on the world Grin

Vikandriv · 20/11/2019 08:55

My boy can hear a crisp packet being opened from miles away. He then sits patiently while you eat them and tie the packet in a knot Grin
Then he goes crazy for 10 minutes.

JaimeBronde · 20/11/2019 09:01

My cat Misty loves hair bobbles & we play 'hair bobble ice hockey' on the living room laminate floor. Misty swipes the bobble to me & I swipe it back & so forth.
She's obsessed with her little scrunchy fabric balls (she's got several on the go) & rolls one to me & miaows very loudly. That's her way of telling me that she wants to play 'kill' the ball on the stairs. I have to throw the ball up the staircase & she hunts it, she then bats the ball back downstairs with her paw & repeat.
I swear she thinks she's a dog as she likes to go for walks & will run to the front door if you say 'walkies' Grin

ClientListQueen · 20/11/2019 09:05

Cotton buds
Hair bobbles
Lids off deo or foundation
Scrunched up paper

bookmum08 · 20/11/2019 09:36

30to50 I have never met another cat obsessed with tags. I always thought it was just mine Grin. Maybe your cat is mine on another one of her nine lives!
(my phone just auto corrected 'cat obsessed' to 'cat bosses'! Ha Ha)

9Greenbottles · 20/11/2019 09:39

Dried pineapple leaves elicited growling possessiveness from one of my boys as a kitten. He still loves to play with the plastic cover for a plug. He doesn't growl if the other cats come near though.

EmperorBallpitine · 20/11/2019 09:40

George is always excited to find a pencil. We always say he thinks it's a snake. He is quite good at catching snakes too. Same boy is a fan of unattended brown boxes. The other two cats are less bothered by our human items, although Hugo did go through a phase of stealing hair bobbles.

Gingerkittykat · 20/11/2019 09:48

Bottle tops, he will spend hours batting them around.

There's also a potentially dangerous obsession with anything even remotely string like, he has chewed bra straps off before. I've found a few things he has chewed in the litter tray but the fact they could get wrapped round his intestines worries me.

doublebarrellednurse · 20/11/2019 10:17

A pen with a fluffy snowman on top seems their fav thing right now. And our shed roof.
