What inanimate objects bring your cat joy?

Our two cats seem to get joy from the oddest things (besides the usual tin of cat food being opened of course!)

BoyCat loves nothing better than to shred a roll of toilet paper. We've stopped hanging it on the actual holder in the bathroom now, otherwise he'll happily pull it from the roll, shredding it into a million tiny pieces as he goes. (He knows he's not allowed to as you can see by the guilty look on his face in the picture...Grin)

GirlCat has a weird obsession with cotton buds. If she sees one, she'll meow at it until she can get hold of it and chew it. I've had to move where I keep them as she worked out how to open the drawer with her claws and get into the box.

What random things or objects do your cats get weirdly excited about? Smile

Craft pom poms, cable ties and tissue tied in a knot.

whatsinthebagwhatcoulditbe · 20/11/2019 10:33

Her brown fleecy blanket. As I speak she is kneading it and sucking it while purring madly. It is very threadbare and not a thing of beauty!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 20/11/2019 10:39

Milk bottle rings, nail files, mint Viscount wrappers. Nothing much any more though, they're old and mostly just sleep all the time.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/11/2019 13:27

The late Fatty adored sweet wrappers. But to eat, not play with. I'd have to chase her round the house and fish them
Out of her mouth if I caught her with them!

GeoffreyAndBungle · 20/11/2019 13:42

Bleach.
He is obsessed with it. After I've cleaned he will roll himself all over whatever surface I've just cleaned thus completely negating any cleaning I've done.

Nerf gun bullets.
He fights and chews them all day. Kids go mad cos the chewed ones jam their guns up. I'm just happy not to be shot at.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/11/2019 13:42

My parents cat adores their DVD player. Hmm

MyDaisyField · 20/11/2019 17:44

whatsin my cat has a favourite fleecy cushion. It’s a fugly thing and I don’t know how we ended up with it. Cat gives it a good kneading and a chew every time he passes and I feel bad every time I go to chuck it away

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/11/2019 17:57

Ours liked nail files too, and the extendable tape measure that snaps back when you’ve finished with it.

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 20/11/2019 18:05

My boy loves pipe cleaners. He has a special green one called pipey that he’s forever batting about then losing then finding again with a joyful miaow.

My old girl cat used to love the doormat. She’d scurry up the hallway and sit on it, hissing at anyone who dared to stand on her mat,

ffswhatnext · 20/11/2019 18:17

Hairbrush - I have to hide it in a cupboard that cannot be opened. Found him opening doors and drawers, just so he can brush himself.
Plastic bags from certain shops. Nothing gets in the way of the love one of mine has for a bag.
Toilet bowl water. Never seen a cat duck his head in there and drink before. Yes there's always an assortment of drinking water around. Room temp for the toilet bowl lover and chilled for the bag lover.
Straws.
Christmas tree. Not the decorations those are fine.
Anything or anyone they think that doesn't belong there, should be doing something else or simply belongs to one of them.

Majorcollywobble · 20/11/2019 18:20

One cat - sadly no longer with us - used to adore playing with a thin green bean if you gave her one . I think it reminded her of the time she managed to get the lid off the stick insect tank one school holiday .

ponygirlcurtis · 20/11/2019 18:38

Fred: silicon. He has stripped the silicon sealant from every door and window he can get to. Then plays with it and walks about carrying it in his mouth like he's got a long white moustache.
George: water. He joins me in the shower most mornings and flings himself at the kitchen sink every time I turn the tap on. His eyebrow whiskers are all short and curly from being singed off by hot water!

There are many, many more, they are an aptly named pair of lovable eejits!

Undies1990 · 20/11/2019 18:45

Mine absolutely goes crazy when a nail file appears! He wants to chew it and fling it around. The purring is insane and get incredibly excited at the mere sight of one. Why nail files?! Strange cat

TroysMammy · 20/11/2019 19:11

Haribo goes into a trance kneading and sucking a white fleecy top which has a panda face on the front and hood with black bobble ears but only when I'm wearing it.

Another cat I had loved the spidery looking stalks off tomatoes.

TroysMammy · 20/11/2019 19:13

Undies I'm sure I read the glue used in emery boards are either derived from fish bones or the glue smells fishy.

DancingQueen2018 · 20/11/2019 19:16

Elastic bands 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 20/11/2019 19:17

Dcat and I were just having a conversation about this as she is very happy with her new cat fountain.

She took against her old one one day and refused to use it. She preferred every tap in the house to be dripping just the exact right amount but for at least the past hour she likes new fountain and all taps are off but she is a cat so may have gone off it by tomorrow

Neilsfavouritechilli · 20/11/2019 19:21

Bottle tops and beer here too. Also my boy likes to eat plastic bags then vom bits of them everywhere. One must never leave the black bin bag tags hanging out of the kitchen bin.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 20/11/2019 19:22

Oh and dried pasta shapes, bat bat bat around.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 20/11/2019 19:22

Just seen my beer typo, I meant bobbles.

Jojo19834 · 20/11/2019 19:25

Mine loves the plastic that comes around the top of bottles like Kikomans soy sauce, Absolute vodka etc. She can hear it miles off and come running however quiet you are. Plays with it for days until someone treads on it

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/11/2019 19:50

Ours used to like small potatoes and cookers for batting as well.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/11/2019 19:50

Conkers, not cookers.

moonbells · 20/11/2019 22:01

Banditboy (formerly Moonkitten, but since he's now a 5kg mouse murdering thug I can't really call him that any more!) still loves his pipe cleaners and I am forever tripping over the things.

Beats mouse corpses.

TrainspottingWelsh · 20/11/2019 22:32

One loves anything small and plastic, or anything that makes a scrunching noise such as sweet wrappers. Paper bags, you have a two second window to remove anything inside that you don't want a cat sat on. Mainly it's cuddly toys, she has a favourite that's half her size, but is a bugger for any. A few years ago the dc filled two big bags with those still in good condition to give to charity, and gave dcat about 6 older toys. We left them in the hallway overnight, and woke up to both bags scattered through the house, with a few she'd taken a particular liking to put in 'her' box.

Dcat2 doesn't do inanimate objects, she likes killing things, sleep and cuddles. Unless you count previously alive but now inanimate objects, when she likes to artistically lay out her acquisitions and sit proudly beside them and purr loudly if they were challenging or in large quantities.

Dcat 3 is too old, but loves it when the barn is full of bales for winter. He sits and watches when we're stacking it, and emits ear piercing yowls if he thinks you are taking too long. Then races to the very top and sits purring happily. Then a really convenient winter where we have to play cat jenga and try and only use bales that won't disturb his perch.
