Pooing on the hearth 😫

My little boy kitten is coming up for six months. His litter tray is by the hearth in the back room. I’d hoped to get rid and just have the one upstairs but no chance.
A couple of times his tray hasn’t been completely clean and he took to pooing on the rug. After a few washes and more vigilant tray cleaning, I’ve ditched the rug.
Now he’s taken to pooing on the hearth - even if his tray is clean.
How do I make him stop????
Older DCat has never gone outside his tray or wherever his outdoor spot is.

Are you using an enzyme spray to clean? If he can smell it at all he'll continue going there.

My elderly cat started pooing outside his tray as he took offence to the litter. Might be a possibility too.

I don’t know what an enzyme spray is? I wonder if he doesn’t like the type of litter? I have changed it recently but I thought they were pretty much the same.

It'll get rid of any lingering traces that he might be able to smell.

The litter thing, I always used wood pellet until my cat started finding it too unstable/uncomfortable for him. Now I use Catsan natural and we don't have the problem any more.

Some cats like one tray for wee and one for poo.

I’ve ordered some spray which will be delivered tomorrow. He’s away for the weekend, so hopefully we can break the habit🤞

If you change litter you should do it gradually. Go back to the old one and see if it helps. Pet shops will sell enzyme cleaners
