What do they do outside all night?

I’ve given up trying to get Dolly in on a night. She’s 2 and has always been quietly determined. I don’t worry about her going off with anyone because she hates anyone getting in her space. What does she do though? We are in an urban area with a few trees and a mucky drain running through them. About six strays living on my doorstep could she be hanging around with them? When I get her in before I go to work she’s not even hungry and doesn’t rush to the litter tray. Unlike poor Daphne who poos on my door mat if she can’t get in. I wish I knew what they get up to.

Mine kills mice.

LemonRedwood · 21/07/2019 09:38

Yep. Midnight mousy snacks

EL8888 · 21/07/2019 09:40

Sniffs things, chases things, runs around etc. Important cat business

Super123 · 21/07/2019 09:41

We shake a packet of Dreamies outside the door to get ours in for the night, if that helps.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 21/07/2019 09:58

Are you sure she isn't a six dinner Sid?

DontCallMeBaby · 21/07/2019 10:06

They definitely spend some time lying in damp places allowing small slugs to hitch a lift. But I’d also like to know what they do when they’re out in the day - sometimes I see another cat just sitting in a random spot and wonder if that’s what mine do.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 21/07/2019 10:15

Wasn't there once a BBC documentary where they equipped the cats of a whole village with cameras and trackers - sth like the "secret lives of cats"???! It was fascinating - all about time sharing of areas and lots of sleep.

madcatladyforever · 21/07/2019 10:19

I know what my cat does because my 97 year old neighbour tells me.
She lies in her flower beds all day sunning herself. My neighbours garden is a bit of a wilderness.
She chatters at birds and takesthe odd swipe at a butterfly but most of the time is belly up sunbathing.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 21/07/2019 10:26

My boy cat is an overnight adventurer. I think he sits on the wall looking as tough as he can to keep the gang of strays away. There may be a few clicky finger dance offs sometimes, a bit of loud chatting after a night on the nip, thieving traffic cones etx. just general boy stuff.
Then he rocks up and flops out and crashes for the day on the bed.

EachandEveryone · 21/07/2019 10:33

She’s addicted to sweets and sometimes it works but it depends and really I can’t be there til 1am if I’m working. Also the strays all come running when they hear the word 😀

And breaking into each other's houses to steal food ...

cushioncovers · 21/07/2019 10:49

Yep my boy is in and out all night in the summer months. He's flat out asleep now for the day.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/07/2019 21:04

Cat stuff, patrolling, sniffing, fighting. The usual.

Sparklingbrook · 21/07/2019 21:12

I try my best to always get her in but some summer nights we have stayed up for her and she's not appeared, but DH gets up at 5am. She has a cat flap into the garage with a bed in there and also one of these, so my guess is sleeping.

What do they do outside all night?
EachandEveryone · 22/07/2019 10:08

I’ve given up I can’t cope with the stress of getting her in at midnight and then not letting her out at 6am when I get up for work because I won’t beable to get her back in. I think I’m just going to call once and leave her for the night. That way I will sleep and she will hopefully be waiting to come in at 6am.

I though they hung about drinking bootleg gin and plotting world domination.

Ted27 · 22/07/2019 10:15

Hunting, shooting, fishing, mine comes in sometimes looking like he's been to all night rave, others times he looks very sheepish, then spends the day flat out snoring.

Its not for humans to know, the Secret Life Of Cats was a massive conspiracy by the cats to fool their house servants

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 22/07/2019 10:40

Mugging old ladies, spraying their tags on walls, victimising the local rodent population plus everything Weezol said.

Weezol · 22/07/2019 11:35

Also, they seem to spend hours loudly miaowing 'But is it, thoooough?' at each other.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 22/07/2019 12:09

Communicating with the Mother ship.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/07/2019 19:29

I loved the secret life of cats, “does your cat roam or fight?” “Ooh no she doesn’t do any thing like that” cuts to shot of tiny tortie kicking off a mile from home 😀

Weezol · 23/07/2019 08:28

Me too. I especially like the cats that didn't roam any further than a dish-sofa-bed triangle. Mine is a house cat (always had been according to rescue) and has no interest in the outside world. It was reassuring to know some cats are just naturally inclined to it.

Spartacus I am now having flashbacks to 'V'.

taylorowmu · 23/07/2019 08:38

Our local cats out back meet up and bloody scream. It has woken me up more than once, little shits.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/07/2019 08:40

As @YesQueen's Ollie would say. They are doing "cat fings"

YesQueen · 23/07/2019 08:41

Mine goes into next doors garden where he then sunbathes and snores for hours. I would put a tracker on him but he doesn't go further than a few metres Grin
