We got a new baby!

On Monday evening we picked up our little fluffy butt. He’s now 9 weeks old. I absolutely love him, we’re slowly introducing him to our older DCat (4yrs) and so far so good. However, since it’s been 4yrs since the older one was a kitten I can’t remember if she walked the same kind of way he does. It’s like he can’t control the direction of all 4 legs at the same time. Is this normal for small kittens?

Compulsory kitten photo added.

What a cutie!

Can’t remember how coordinated mine were as kittens unfortunately.

Does he have a name?

TailsoftheManyPaws · 27/06/2019 18:47

Is he definitely nine weeks? His eyes still look bluish in the photo, which suggests he's a bit younger, but maybe it's the lighting.

ProudRavenclaw · 27/06/2019 19:09

He’s definitely 9 weeks. His eyes are green, it’s probably the black and white filter on the photo. We’ve called him Salem Binx (after my love of witches and Hocus Pocus 😂). I’ve looked for videos of older DCat but we didn’t get her until she was 12 weeks anyway. Thanks for the replies.

Oh, he's a lovely boy. What's his name?

Can you post a recording of him walking? Someone might be able to advise. One of my latest boys is 16 months, but he came to be with very spindly looking legs at five months but he gets around fine.

ProudRavenclaw · 27/06/2019 19:16

He gets around absolutely fine, he’s constantly running around. He can jump a fair distance as well. It’s just on the very rare occasions that he does walk his back legs look a bit odd. He doesn’t cry or meow or anything (unless he wants a cuddle or food) which makes me think he’s not in any pain. He also lets me stretch out his legs and touch them at the joints with no crying. Maybe he just hasn’t figured out how his legs are supposed to work 🤷🏻‍♀️

ifonly4 · 27/06/2019 19:26

Could it be due to the speed he's walking around? They can look a big leggy when younger (in fact my spindly one still does) , so maybe that highlights the way they walk. I can't remember my two walking around as quickly as my present two.

ProudRavenclaw · 27/06/2019 19:32

Quite possibly ifonly4. He does zip around more than at a normal pace so it could actually be that he has no problem with running and jumping but hasn’t figured out how to move them properly when he’s just walking. He’s a funny little thing.

He is a cutie 😍😍

When my two were kittens they were just legs and ears and so uncoordinated! They had funny little kitten walks and we're forever falling off things and missing jumps... they were rescues and had been separated from their mum far too young so kind of hadn't learned to cat. They figured out how legs work eventually though.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/06/2019 19:34

Ours looks sickle hocked but went through a phase of being all gangly. He’s a real cutie.

I got a kitten a few months ago and was told she was 9 weeks. Now I realise she definitely wasn't, there was still a bluish tint to her eyes and she was quite wobbly on her feet. Very fast and courageous but unsteady. She is doing really well, is a handful and is the most playful little thing but I frequently have to try and stop her suckling my neck.

teenmum18 · 27/06/2019 19:39

Aww he's a cutey 😍 reminds me of my boy when he was that age. Mines 1 now and is still gangly and he eats like a gannet.

Love the name lol I wanted to call ours Thackery binx but the kids wouldn't let me 😩

He’s using his back legs and moving them correctly, it just looks to me as though he isn’t putting enough weight on them while he’s walking. He can balance on them without any problems when trying to catch flies and birds through the window (he hasn’t realised that there’s glass between them yet) so I know he can actually hold his full body weight. Perhaps he just doesn’t like walking 😂

Aww lovely kitten (and love the name , 'Salem' was on our list of names too)

I just got my cats last month , that's exactly how they would;ve looked as kittens (both jet black)

ProudRavenclaw · 27/06/2019 19:50

Oh teenmum18 he’s beautiful. Well it was a choice between Salem or Satan, should have gone with the second option because he causes so much mayhem Grin.

At the minute he’s trying to jump up from the windowsill to catch my bat decoration hanging from my curtain pole (we do Hallowe’en all year round in my house). It’s far too high for him to grab but he’s very determined. I’ll have to close the curtains if he continues.

He’s adorable. Love me a black cat.Smile

ProudRavenclaw · 27/06/2019 19:54

We had loads of names picked, but when we saw his photo we knew instantly that he was “Salem”. Then DD felt sorry for him because she and her brother both have middles names, as does our older DCat and he didn’t, so she piped up with Binx.

Strangely enough 70 he’s not fully black, he’s a black tabby but you can’t see the markings under his fur unless he’s in direct sunlight. It’s a beautiful pattern too.

I still wonder if it's a case of looking gangly as he's younger. If you're still worried and can manage to record him that might help. Do try and enjoy him though. They grow up far too soon.

ProudRavenclaw · 27/06/2019 20:00

He’s going for his first round of vaccinations next week so I’ll ask the vet to check his legs and to observe him walking. Oh don’t I know it, it was GirlCats 4th birthday at the beginning of the month and it just doesn’t seem that long ago since we adopted her. I still hold her like a baby Blush

Update on Salem’s walking:

He’s been to the vets and had his first vaccinations. I got her to observe his walking and she said he looks absolutely fine, kittens go through a growth spurt around about this age and his back legs look to have grown more than the front, so he looks a wonky but he’ll level out 🤦🏻‍♀️.

Gorgeous! You can post more pics, y’know. if you really want to... I’ll look just to be polite...

MusterTheRohirim · 03/07/2019 18:24

Gorgeous! Lucky you. I have a black cat and I call him Thackary Binx for the day on Halloween Grin(I do keep him in that night though, just seems safer as someone might decide they want a familiar for the night Blush)

Enjoy your fluff ball.

ProudRavenclaw · 03/07/2019 18:45

Yeah, I’d do the same Muster if they were outdoor cats. Hallowe’en is such a bad time for black cats. I really don’t understand why more people don’t adopt black cats from rescues. They’re extremely loyal. My older girl is definitely my familiar, she follows me everywhere I go in the house and constantly wants to snuggle. I can’t go to the toilet without her sitting outside crying for me.
