Kitten suckling help!

We have 2 four month old kittens (boy and girl) and have had them since they were 9 weeks old. The girl has suddenly started suckling on us; hands, arms, ears, face and no matter how much we push her away she keeps coming back for more! Is there anything we can do to dissuade her from this?

its a comfort thing like thumb sucking maybe try put a blanket were she trying to suckle see if you can encourage her to become attached to a certain blanket instead .Something furry

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/11/2018 13:32

It’s pretty’s normal, she wants the comfort of it.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/11/2018 14:56

Cheddar looks like she's trying to breastfeed from me and she's 6!

smurfy2015 · 22/11/2018 15:00

Smurfcat is 3 next March and loves attaching herself to my thumb, lying on her furry back and sucking it like a baby having a bottle. Its a comfort thing.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/11/2018 15:10

My 9yo cat suckles an invisible dummy in his sleep.

costacoffeecup · 22/11/2018 15:36

My six year old still does it to my ear at every opportunity

ItsTheKissing · 22/11/2018 15:40

Ok thanks. That's more reassuring so will let her carry on Smile

Our cat's around 10 and he still does it. I've read many times on here that it's due to being taken away from mother too early. Just had a quick Google, between 8 and 12 weeks to be taken away. Maybe 12 weeks should be the minimum. Poor loves.

Branleuse · 22/11/2018 16:16

loads of cats do it. I think its cute. One of mine does it sometimes. Used to all the time, but he seems to have grown out of it a bit

TopBitchoftheWitches · 22/11/2018 16:22

I've only ever seen this with my recent kitten. He loves to sucking on the throw we have on the sofa.
He's very noisy though.

cricketmum84 · 22/11/2018 16:26

Ivy does this, she is a year old. She only does it on my dressing gown sleeve though. I don't try to stop her, I think it's cute but DH says it's weird...

cricketmum84 · 22/11/2018 16:27

P.s very cute kittens!!

TopBitchoftheWitches · 22/11/2018 16:41

This is the kitten, I mentioned. 💜

@TopBitchoftheWitches oh he's cute ☺️

Vitalogy · 22/11/2018 16:46

I don't find it cute. I think it's upsetting thinking about them missing their mothers and being taken away too soon.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 22/11/2018 16:47

Yeah my 6 year old female does this still, it's a bit weird, but cute!

She only goes for fluffy fleece material though, namely my dressing gown and throw blanket!

ItsTheKissing · 22/11/2018 16:47

@Vitalogy yes, I'd read that it was something to do with being removed from their mother too early. Boy kitten doesn't do it though, he's too busy stalking specs of dust on the floor!

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 22/11/2018 16:50

It is cute. But not at 4am!

cricketmum84 · 22/11/2018 16:52

Ivy wasn't taken away too soon. She is a rescue who we got at 16 weeks, she was in the same pen as her mum from birth until we adopted her.

She still suckles.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 22/11/2018 16:52

My little boy's mum rejected all her kittens so they were hand reared. I was told this could happen.

If he finds comfort in it, I'm ok with that.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 22/11/2018 16:53

@ItsTheKissing thank you, he is lovely, most of the time Grin

sweetkitty · 24/11/2018 01:30

My little boy suckles his furry bed.

AlexaAmbidextra · 24/11/2018 15:57

I used to have a girl Siamese kitten who would suckle at the nipples of my older boy Siamese. They would settle in the corner of the sofa and go to it. The look of bliss on the boy’s face was something to behold. He loved it. 😹
