I have a 12 week old kitten and we are struggling to get her to answer to her name does anyone have any advice on what we can do my older 3 all knew their names by now and come running when we shout them but not the kitten we didn’t really want to have to change her name but we will if we have to. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Maybe she doesn't like it??

What is it?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 11/06/2018 18:02

I never knew that cats actually came to their right name! I always assumed it was the sound of the tin opener that brought them running.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 11/06/2018 18:03

Give her a Dreamie every time you call her name?

KirstenRaymonde · 11/06/2018 18:03

Are you being serious? I don’t think any cats know their names. They might recognise your voice in general, but I’ve never been convinced any cat knows their name.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 11/06/2018 18:04

We called her BlackBerry now i’m thinking we might need to change it to something else.

My older 3 know when your shouting them and come running as soon as they here their name AsAprofessionalFekko

So you have one correctly functioning cat out of four? That must be a relief.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 11/06/2018 18:05

Does she come to other noises such as tin opener? Is she white? She could be deaf. Or perhaps you just haven't discovered the name by which she wants to be known as by her slaves.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 11/06/2018 18:05

Thank you I will try that with the dreamies.

KirestenRaymonde you haven’t met my cats they come when you shout them.

We had loads of cats growing up. I'd sweer they only come when they really want to (or think you have a treat).

welshmist · 11/06/2018 18:06

too long a name, the dreamie is a good idea. shorten name to Bibi...BB

IHaveBrilloHair · 11/06/2018 18:06

I have 4 cats, only one knows her name, and she only answers to it when I have dreamies she feels like it.
Cats are horrible.Grin

AsAProfessionalFekko · 11/06/2018 18:06

'OiCat' might work.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 11/06/2018 18:06

Just shorten it. Says the woman who "shortened" her cat's name from Leroy to LeroyRoRoBerryBananaFruitBat.

Eenymeeny123 · 11/06/2018 18:06

I read some where that card recognise their name and their owners voice, they just don't care enough to respond😀

KirstenRaymonde · 11/06/2018 18:07

My cats come when I shout them as well, but they don’t know their names. They come to each other’s names - it’s my voice they recognise, not their names

Eenymeeny123 · 11/06/2018 18:07

Cards=cats

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 11/06/2018 18:08

Shouldwestayorshouldwego yeah she comes to other noises like when her food gets taken out she’s all black I did wonder if there was a chance she could be deaf she does move her ears if she hears a noise.

ICantCopeAnymore · 11/06/2018 18:11

My cats all know their individual names. Two of them have four syllable names. If I call that cat, it comes. None of the others will.

If I say the word, "Dreamies", they will all charge in from wherever they've been and sit in a row staring at me until I give them Dreamies.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 11/06/2018 18:12

Thank you I will shorten it we have a habit of calling her tiny one so I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what she thinks she’s called. She definetly knows when the dreamies are out though she could hear that packet russling from a mile away think she just likes being an awkward bugger.

Eenymeany123 I think i’ve got one that doesn’t want to respond unless there’s something in it for her.

SailOnSea · 11/06/2018 18:13

Neither of our come when you call unless they think you've got food!

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 11/06/2018 18:13

ICan’tCopeAnymore all mine know their own names just the youngest am struggling with she’s either deaf or just hates her name.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 11/06/2018 18:14

SailOnSea my lot are a bugger for food doesn’t matter if it’s theirs or mine if they smell it they are having it.

ICantCopeAnymore · 11/06/2018 18:19

Maybe she's just stupid? Grin

I really don't think cats have a preference on their own name.

DoubleLottchen · 11/06/2018 18:19

I'm pretty sure my cat recognises the words "dinner" and "breakfast" and the question "have you fed the cat?" from the way he torpedoes down to the kitchen whenever you say a sentence with them in.

His name on the other hand... Sometimes he indeed comes running, other times his ear just gives the faintest little flick.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 11/06/2018 18:26

ICan’tCopeAnymore it wouldn’t surprise me if she was just a little bit stupid.

Haha DoubleLotchen I can’t even get an twitch out of Blackberry when you say her name it’s like she suddenly gets selective hearing.
