I have a 12 week old kitten and we are struggling to get her to answer to her name does anyone have any advice on what we can do my older 3 all knew their names by now and come running when we shout them but not the kitten we didn’t really want to have to change her name but we will if we have to. Any advice greatly appreciated.

I would think i had a dysfunctional cat if they DID answer to their name

catandpanda · 11/06/2018 18:40

Could she be nervous of the bigger cats? Maybe put her food somewhere else and try calling her? Or cuddling her saying her name? I think our cat knows her name - she comes to it and meows to it if anyone says it in conversation - but also often comes when any name is called as she wants attention.

The only word one of ours knows is 'out'. To be fair he does know it very well. So well that he even says owwwt when he wants to go out. There seems to be no reason why his hearing will not work in reverse to call him indoors by his name but it seems that coming in will only be done on his terms. His sister will come to both names though, can't say out but does say 'Mello' to everyone when she comes into a room. No prizes for guessing which one likes to be out all the time and which one likes her home comforts.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 11/06/2018 18:51

catandpanda no she seems to get on really well with the older cats especially the one that is only a few months older than her they love chasing after each other and sleeping on the couch together. I will try that thank you see if that works with her.

Shorten it to berry

Littletreefrog · 11/06/2018 18:57

Neither of my cats respond to their names, they respond to my voice but I could be calling them 'stupidhairylayabout' and they would still come.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 11/06/2018 19:30

Dodie66 thank you I will try that she might understand that a bit better than her full name.

Haha lol littlrtreefrog maybe I should try calling her that and see what she does lol.

I read somewhere that they respond to names ending in the e sound so berry might work. What are your other cats called?

PuppyMonkey · 11/06/2018 20:13

My cats come when I call, but only when I put on a really silly high pitched voice to do it. Grin Quite embarrassing yelling in a high pitched squeal down the garden I can tell you.

lynmilne65 · 11/06/2018 20:14

No, I just shout 'KITTY KITTY KITTY ' !!!!

lynmilne65 · 11/06/2018 20:18

And, in a high pitch!!!

AnnaMagnani · 11/06/2018 20:21

My cats all turn up of a vaguely high pitched noise. I don't think you actually have to say the name, just the noise.

Individual names - forget it.

The sound of us shaking the Snackies tube gets nextdoor's cat to turn up Hmm

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 11/06/2018 20:56

Dodie66 someone else told me that same thing. My others are peanut, Phoenix and toffee. I will shorten her name and see if that works.

Hahahs PuppyMonkey

AnnaMagnani hahsha you even get the neighbours cat responding to you I wish I could just get my youngest to responde to me might just change her name to Diva.

Mine understand their names(and some "pet" names I use for them), as they will look up at me when I say them. They also understand Breakfast, Supper Time, sweeties (Dreamies), Yoghurt (lik e lix), and Tuna.

Someone once said one of the differences between cats & dogs is that both recognise their names, cats just choose not to respond.

Oldraver · 12/06/2018 09:22

Yes I heard the ee sound works. Just shout BeBeee while rattling the Dreamies

thecatneuterer · 12/06/2018 11:20

I thought this must be a joke thread. I don't think I've ever had a cat that know's its name. They can come to the sound of my voice, or a particular sort of noise I might make, or the sound a food can being opened, but never a particular name.

ICantCopeAnymore · 12/06/2018 11:28

How odd. My cats have always all known their names.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/06/2018 13:59

My cat knows his name, his ears turn to listen to you when you say “the cat...” or “he did this earlier”.

On a warm night if he’s not hungry we can whistle. Literally, he responds to dhs whistles.

MirandaWest · 12/06/2018 14:16

I don’t think our cat knows her name.

She does recognise the sound of a dreamies Packet being shaken though
