My gorgeous Sphynx boy is currently at the vets, very poorly. He was fine this morning then went down hill very quickly, the vet said that cats hide illness very well.
He was struggling to breathe and not acting ‘himself’. The vet has put him on oxygen therapy and she wants to do x rays. I’ve been sent home to wait. She’s just called to say that they haven’t x rayed him yet (stressed) but they’ve done an ultrasound on his heart and can see that the top two chambers (?) are two and a half times bigger than they should be which will mean fluid on his lungs. They’ve given him medication to try clear the fluid.
She said there’s a 50/50 chance he may pull through. I’m so sad, he’s due to turn 4 in September. She said that for such a young cat he’s ‘really really poorly’. Sad

A handhold and Flowers for you.

Smellybears · 26/04/2018 14:41

Thank you. I keep thinking have I done something wrong but the vet said no. They’re bound to say that though!

So sorry to hear about your lovely boy. What's is name? From my experience vets to tend to err on the side of caution, so try and hang in there - he's in the best place.

Smellybears · 26/04/2018 14:43

My husband said that, that the vets have to say that he may not make it. He’s called Bagheera, really do hope he pulls through. It was horrible seeing him struggling so much and not being his usual self

Here he is! He’s a sphynx but has some fur Smile

Sorry to hear your lovely cat is poorly x

Tigerblue · 26/04/2018 15:05

Bagheera suits him perfectly. He's a lovely boy. You haven't done anything wrong at all. I'm not saying he's been in pain or feeling bad, but cats hide it very well. As soon as you knew he wasn't right, you've obviously taken him in ASAP for help.

Smellybears · 26/04/2018 15:15

Thank you for the reassurance tigerblue

Oh he’s lovely. Did vet mention HCM? Have you had him from a kitten? Fingers crossed they can get him all xx

Potentialmadcatlady · 26/04/2018 15:24

All better that is supposed to say. 🐱

Smellybears · 26/04/2018 15:32

No hasn’t mentioned hcm as yet, I’ve just been googling and that came up. Yes had him since a kitten, his parents and grand parents heart scan papers were all clear of heart problems. Took nearly two years to find him as I wanted parents that had been heart scanned as I knew sphynx cats are prone to heart conditions.
I can hear his little meow in my head, really do hope he’s ok xx

He’s got to be put to sleep. I’m devastated. He’s not responding to medication Sad

Oh how terrible, I am so sorry, such a young cat. Do they know what caused this ?

TroysMammy · 26/04/2018 16:49

I'm so sorry.

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/04/2018 17:42

I'm so sorry. You couldn't have foreseen this happening. Poor boy.

Smellybears · 26/04/2018 18:42

Sphynx cats are prone to heart disease. Really shit. She said she’s had another one in recently with the same but he was only a year old. Sad

Troy died from hypertropic cardiomyopathy aged 5. He was a black and white short haired moggie. No pedigree in him but I suspect his mother and father were brother and sister.

StrangeLookingParasite · 26/04/2018 19:57

Oh no, I'm so sorry. Your beautiful boy. Oh that's so, so shit.

MrsMozart · 26/04/2018 20:05

I am so sorry Flowers

Potentialmadcatlady · 26/04/2018 20:34

Oh no.. I’m so sorry... I was worried earlier that that was what it would be but didn’t want to say too much before you knew. I’m no expert but I do know that clear scans don’t mean that the cat won’t develop hcm at some stage and Sphynx cats are very prone to having it. I have lost two with heart conditions.
I am so very very sorry...

TheLongRider · 26/04/2018 21:53

I'm so sorry. He looked gorgeous. Flowers

ScreamingValenta · 26/04/2018 21:56

I'm so sorry Flowers. How awful to lose him at such a young age.

SingaSong12 · 26/04/2018 21:59

So sorry Flowers

Smellybears · 26/04/2018 22:02

Potential you lost two, I’m so sorry, it’s devastating.
Oh troysmammy, that’s so young 😔
Husband has taken it so badly. He wanted to bring him home but I didn’t think it fair for him to struggle breathing and the vet said that he could deteriorate even more. He’s now saying we should have kept him going at the vets over night.
This is so hard. I had to make the decision. It wasn’t fair in my eyes to bring him home, have him struggle to breathe (he’s been on oxygen at the vets) then possibly have to rush him to out of hours which would have caused him more stress. I’m devastated. More so because he used to sleep in the bed with us but then our little one came along in January and he’s not been allowed in the bed since, he was allowed back once little one was in his own room.
I saw a rainbow before whilst I was looking out of the window that he sat in. I’d like to think it was his way of saying that he was watching me. You’ll probably think I’m silly for thinking that!

He was beautiful! One of my Persians has cardiomyopathy. So I know how awful it feels when they are diagnosed.
There is a saying; better a week to early than a day too late. You did the most loving thing you possibly could for him. You couldn't let him suffer.ThanksThanksCake
