For those of you with multiple cats...

Are they all insured? We have 2 and they are not insured, if they need treatment we would be able to pay what is needed at the time. We do pay a monthly fee for flea and worm treatment and vaccinations.
If you have several cats, do you have insurance for all of them? I imagine it would cost an awful lot each month, or do you just take the risk? Just curious, would love to adopt more resuces although DH would be hard to persuade!

I have 2 and they are both insured, same with my DSiS, and my DBro. I've been lucky so far, but both of my siblings have received more from their insurance for long term conditions for cats than they have paid into the insurance over the years.

We also have a thing with the vet where we pay an annual fee and it includes microchip then annual vaccinations and vet check/regular flea and worming plus one appointment per year. The vet are really good though about the appointments - one of our cats had an infection last year and they let us use both her and the other cat's appointments so it was free. It turned out the other cat didn't need to see the vet at all so hers wasn't wasted. I let insurers know that we had this annual thing and they reduced the premiums too in light of vaccinations and regular vet checks.

My two are insured, just over £8 a month for both and we paid for the vaccinations for life when we first got them so their jabs and a check up are free every year.

Currently have 3 all insured. I did cancel the insurance for my 22 yr old in his last few years though.

No, neither of them are. It cost me when my 17 year old had kidney troubles, but I calculated 18 years of insurance would have cost me more than it did to pay for his treatment - that being the only serious illness any of my cats have had so far (touch wood). If I hadn't been the type of person who always has savings put away for emergencies, I would have insured them though.

Insured 15 quid a month with petplan. Couldn't afford treatment so couldn't have a cat without insurance

It was less than £20 a month to insure all 3 so I was happy with that.

The kitten was insured for the first year we had her just incase any issues developed as she was only 6 weeks when we got her. Now she is a healthy sized 1 year old she isn't insured, out older cat has never been insured as we got her as a rescue at 2 years old. They are both inside cats so very limited chance of injury so only illness we need to worry about really and we will deal with anything like that as and when it comes along. We have had the oldest cat for 6 years and she hasn't had to go to the vets once (touch wood).

But last year one of my cats died, she'd had lymphoma and had been on chemo and associated medicines for four years. In average it cost about £400-500 a month. So really for me there's no question. Insurance is expensive but I could never had afforded all those vet bills

My youngest two are. £28 per month for the pair. Petplan midrange (the one that gives 7k per year, cover).

Older boy, 10yrs old, isn’t insured. He doesn’t have any conditions or previous accidents. He doesn’t roa. Far from home.

Mine aren’t - We figured we had enough savings to pay for any disaster - and it was definitely the right decision until a couple of years ago.
Both are now 17, have multiple daily medications for chronic conditions, prescription food etc and along with regular blood tests and cost me over £300 / month which is quite a struggle. Not sure how much of this would have been covered by insurance but oh how I wish I had a fully comprehensive plan now!! I never considered the ongoing expense of this kind of illness.

Neither of mine are. I am lucky enough not to have had any serious vets bills. I would find the money if I needed to if they did need anything.

2 cats, both insured (get multi-cat discount).

Quite handy really as BoyCat came in last night with a badly cut paw, off to the emergency vet we went. £185 charge on the credit card but we'll have all but £25 of it back before the bill lands in January.

We're also in the vet's monthly payment scheme which covers jabs, flea and worm treatment, and a mid-year check-up. All in all it works out at around £20 per month per cat.

Thanks so much for all the replies, really helpful. There does seem to be a range of prices. I guess it is a gamble, we are prepared to pay out if we have to. I wonder if anyone out there with a larger cat family are able to afford insurance with say 4 or more cats. Vets bills are horrendous if you are unlucky though.

I have two and they are both insured. Thank God. They've both had huge insurance claims this year and more too come as one of them has been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy.

I have four cats (at one point had nine) and they were/are all insured. Currently i pay about £80 a month for their insuance as they are all over ten. I can afford the £80 but would have really struggled to find the £6k i needed this summer when my cat was poorly with a very bad double ear infection, or the £500 ish a month when my cat was on chemo. But it's all up to how much you can afford if your cats get a long term condition

Just as well as one cat developed bladder crystals and a blockage when we were on holiday and the cattery lady rushed him to a posh animal hospital where the bill for tests and 2½ days on a drip came to over £2,000

I have 15 and a couple of fosters, they’re not insured

3 cats, not insured. We spent £500 on medical bills for one of them, 18m ago. Someone tell me, how much would we have paid in premiums over last 6 yrs, for two fully vaxed young cats (I assume the old cat of unknown vintage is uninsurable). Would insurance premiums have cost more or less than (500 - deductible).?

If I had to pay that for my cats, I would have paid £2k for premiums in last 6 yrs. So far, no insurance has been a good choice.

We had 7, including 4 black ones and two tabbies, and we actually only insured 3 of them - one black, one ginger and one tabby. So occasionally sooty was also muffin, aretha or oprah. You get the idea.

No mention of micro chips. The vet wasn’t daft, and even joked that one of the tabbies was looking more stripey than usual!

Yes, it was insurance fraud. It’s a fair cop gov!

No it didn’t mess with their records because only one of them was properly unwell. The black ones were kittens which we knew would be rehomed so it was v short term. One of the tabbies was a rescue and straight after we got her, hurt her paw, so the vet saw her under one of the cats’ insurance because we had forgotten to sort it when she arrived. Not ideal admittedly.
