Does anyone else's cat do this?

My lovely kitty is obsessed with washing up sponges!

She steals them and growls at us if we try to get them back. At first we didn't know what the noise was - she's never growled before! Today she got the magic eraser and went mental. I've even taught her to fetch like a dog using a sponge.

Anyone else's cat do this or other crazy obsessions?

My cat growls to his dcat brother over leftover vegetables. .
He is very possessive of his peas /broccoli /cauliflower and carrots you know!!

BackieJerkhart · 23/08/2017 21:18

Grin Grin Grin

No but I wish they did!

Our cat has a hair bobble that is his and his only. He knows which one it is out of the many that are scattered around the house. He takes it upstairs when he goes to bed and brings it back down in the morning.
He also goes mad for marbles. He picks them up, chucks them about the kitchen and chases them until they inevitably go under something.
They're funny!

Heratnumber7 · 23/08/2017 21:21

Ours carries one of the little woollly hats that innocent drinks occasionally put on their juice bottles around in her mouth.

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/08/2017 21:30

Yes, ours used to fish them out the sink while wet & fling them across the kitchen.

It's not fun to have a wet sponge smack you in the leg at 06:15am.

moonbells · 23/08/2017 21:49

Moonkitten loves pipe cleaners! He stole one when a tiny kitten and wouldn't let us near even though I was very worried about the wire. Fast forward a few years and he still carries them about and plays with them. I have to buy him them specially!

TroysMammy · 23/08/2017 21:52

Troy used to love to play with the plastic that holds cans of drink together. He used to come scurrying down the drive with ones he had found discarded in the street (rough area) Grin

Fluffy - sounds like a hungry kitty at 6.15! teach him/her to fetch them it's awesome! Grin

Heratnumber7 ours also loves a bobble hat belonging to DD - it has a furry Pom Pom she can't resist mauling. Oh and the poor sylvannian family hedgehogs!

Mine goes nuts for cotton wool buds. Proper saucer eyes when she sees one.

Ruhrpott · 23/08/2017 22:03

Yep mine loves the sponges too and steals them out of the sink and runs off with them

missmove38 · 23/08/2017 22:03

Yes! Both mine will jump off and run off with my washing up sponges?!

Ruhrpott · 23/08/2017 22:04

She only growls though with boiled ham or bits of chicken if one of the other cats comes near

MrsTrebus · 23/08/2017 22:14

Wonderful to find so many sponge aficionados out there Grin

We discovered our girls talents for fetching the sponge whilst watching reruns of Bake Off the Professionals and call it 'Le Sponge' in the French hosts guttural Gaelic tones Grin

Fatty used to love the probe covers that went on our thermometers at work. I'd always come home with a pocket full. She also likes pens.

RubbishMantra · 25/08/2017 00:54

Rubber bands, the really thick ones that go around post, he can sniff them out and will do anything to get his paws on them. He fetches them too.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 25/08/2017 14:11

Felix loved cleaning / washing up gloves. He used to steal them and bury them under his favourite bath mat.

Sev only has his IKEA mouse - he dunks it in his least favourite waterbowl. It's lovely to step on a soggy plush mouse in the dark.
His sister at NDN has a favourite wall plug.

toldmywrath · 25/08/2017 14:16

I've had quite a few cats over the years and I've never heard of this sponge phenomenonSmile

Toldcat gets very excited when I've just had a shower and likes to climb on my shoulders. When she was younger she would sit on the towel turbanned on my head, occasionally she still does.

I love my cats!

Expatdh · 25/08/2017 14:46

My kitty (Alan) constantly steals sponges too - but it is actually a cheap toy for him (a whole bag of them for less than a pound). We keep our dish sponge on a little plate out of his reach, and give him his own sponge to play with! Other favourites include straws, bottle caps and hair bobbles. His favourite food is corn on the cob and he would happily nibble from the opposite side (if we let him, which of course we don't haha).

paradoxicalInterruption · 25/08/2017 14:51

Ours steals cat toy from the neighbouring cats and brings them home. We have a pile of them....

CrazyDuchess · 25/08/2017 14:51

Mine go crazy for straws- even bought them their own pack to stop them fishing mine out of my drinks

Doobigetta · 25/08/2017 19:21

Mine likes dead leaves a lot. But only indoor ones. Outside, where she's surrounded by them, she doesn't care. Also cotton buds. And she completely destroyed my oven gloves, because they got melted cheese on them and she shredded them licking the cheese off.

TheLongRider · 25/08/2017 22:41

LongGirlCat loves hair bobbins. She trots around with them in her mouth and then buries them under the bathroom mat.

emwithme · 25/08/2017 22:50

I wish it was sponges. They are cheap and easily replaceable.

BoyCat has a thing for oven gloves. We need to remember to keep them in the drawer, because otherwise they end up with no fingers.

Weedsnseeds1 · 25/08/2017 23:40

Mine has a feather obsession, I pick them up whenever I see them and he will turf the contents of my handbag out looking for them when I come home!
Tortoiseshell girl four cats ago was a growler about anything she'd annexed, but no particular theme to her rizes!
