Wet food recommendations

Harry is off to the vets again tonight as he's not eating his beloved biscuits and I suspect his mouth might be playing up again.

He usually has biscuits for breakfast, lunch and supper (occasionally) with a pouch for dinner but we're now giving him half a pouch for breakfast and lunch and a whole one for dinner. He has Natures Menu normal or Country Hunter but (and please don't flame me for this) I can't afford for him to have it twice a day. I feel really guilty but we just can't afford £60 a month on cat food!

I'm thinking of giving him one pouch of Natures Menu and the rest one of the supermarket brands. I'm telling myself cats have been fed Whiskas for years he'll be OK...

Can anyone recommend cheaper wet food? I've tried him on Butchers but he wouldn't touch it and Felix makes him smelly.

Who's flaming you? I'm sort of 'stuck' with the Country Hunter nowadays but my CC certainly wishes I wasn't.

Do you have any supermarkets close by?

One of my friends is going to Aldi this week and is going to get me some of their food for him to try - at 19p a tray I don't mind trying it out.

Thanks cozie. I'm hoping the vet will tell me there's nothing wrong and I've overreated again but I don't think so. Harry was fussing for some food this morning so DH gave him some biscuits and he went up to them, looked at them and walked away.

Bogbastard is just on wet food following cystitis and has a mixture of Applaws tins, Sheba pouches and rats

Whiskas did seem to produce some unfortunate results in the litter tray but he's been fine on Felix.

PS the posh breeder he came for on was very happy to recommend Aldi pouches

Thanks Bog. I was looking at Sheba, it looks expensive enough that he might consider it! I'm pinning my hopes on Aldi though...

Supermarkets or Pets at Home quite often seem to have a special offer on it which helps?

Mine gets mostly natures menu but I bulk it out with harringtons pouches (60p each I think) and some raw food so just turkey mince or bits of chicken - whatever is on offer in the supermarket! I often get 500g turkey mince for 50p
Aside from that he will eat morrisons own brand pouches and that's it

Aldi and Lidl seem to get some good reviews. Home Bargains and B and M often have posher varieties if wet food at reasonable prices. I'm just about to set off on my regular 40 mile round trip to purchase the one flavour of one brand of dry food deemed palatable by my own fussy beast...

My secondhand Siamese boy won't eat biscuits at all (would rather go hungry, we have tried them all) and us increasingly fussy about his wet food pouches.

Can't use whiskas or Felix as he gets an upset tummy, used Royal Canin for a while but now he scoffs the whole pouch down and. Then throws it straight back up again.

Have been feeing a mixture of meowing heads (he will eat it and keeps it down but doesn't love it) and applaws (really likes) with an occasional dish of cooked chicken or turkey (would prefer just this)

We are trying out Alno Nature (likes it but portion size very small, he's a big cat) and Natures Menu (not so keen) this week.

My cat refused to eat any of the normal brands but settled on Sheba Fresh Choice after a while. We have since been able to supplement that with other Sheba versions (but only some).

She was sick twice after eating Gourmet Perle, but if I slip the odd one in every so often she's fine. I think it must be very rich.

The other thing she adores is pilchards in tomato sauce. They are a huge treat for her and she practically eats the bowl as well! (We spread the tin out over 2-3 nights to avoid her gorging though)

BorpCat1 loves the Aldi trays, and also the tesco 'finest' fish flakes pouches and tesco trays. I do look for grain-free/vegetable-free cat food because BorpCat2 had a sensitive tummy. Sometimes she turns her nose up at Butchers (especially in the evening when it's the second half of the can that's been open all day) but a crushed up dreamies on the top usually changes her mind.

The little bugger that lives in my house will eat gourmet Perle. Hes on 4 pouches a day and it ain't cheap. Can't have biscuits after having most of his teeth out last year and I tried and tried to get him in other brands of wet food but he just won't entertain it.

His lordship also likes to eat ham and loves the cat soup pouches.

James wellbeloved turkey pouches aren't too expensive, particularly if you order them today on zooplus with 20% off. Think it worked out about 40p a pouch including the loyalty discount.

I try to get the high meat, no sugar. Best I've found is hi life tempt me, which I get from Amazon. Failing which kit e Kat has no sugar (but poor quality) or tins of, I think, butchers?

The purely holistic pouches from Pets at Home aren't too bad price wise. I think it was £13 for 32 pouches. Hi Life tempt me pouches are a similar quality and used to be £12 for 32 on amazon but have gone up to £16 now. I give those as the main wet food with some meowing heads, applaws, Lily's kitchen etc once every couple of days as they are a bit more expensive.

Ours has gourmet perle, the only thing she will deign to eat at the moment. Sainsbury's has 60 pouches on offer for £16 right now so I stocked up - it'll be sods law that she decides next week that she hates it.

Mrspnut ain't that the truth. I thought I'd cracked it a few months ago when the cat who lives in my house seemed to get a taste for aldi pouches so stocked up. Nope, 2 days later and he's turning his nose up at them. He's recently taken to just eating the jelly or gravy from the Perle pouches and leaving the meat. I tried the pate but his lordship wouldn't even entertain it.

The hi life and purely holistic ones (I have a suspicion that they are the same food in different packaging, probably from the same factory in Thailand) are definitely very different in texture to most other cat foods so I can well believe a cat might just refuse them altogether.

Thanks for the recommendations, the Hi Life could be a possibility as they do tuna varieties.

An update from the vet trip - my poor little man has got ulcers and inflamed gums. He's going back tomorrow for a dental, hopefully just to clean everything up, but possibly to have more extractions. I know it's got to be done but I'm worried about him having more anaesthetic. He's going to have bloods done to check his liver and kidneys so I'm panicking they'll find something wrong with him.

I feel so sorry for the poor little bugger

Poor lad. Toothache/a sore mouth is just awful.

Poor thing. I was also going to say James Wellbeloved pouches seem decent and work out cheapish.

If you shop at Tesco. Feline Fayre pouches are good value and decent quality. The blue ones are complementary food not complete though so you can't just feed them FF in a day - you need to give a meal of complete food too.
