Wet food recommendations

Harry is off to the vets again tonight as he's not eating his beloved biscuits and I suspect his mouth might be playing up again.

He usually has biscuits for breakfast, lunch and supper (occasionally) with a pouch for dinner but we're now giving him half a pouch for breakfast and lunch and a whole one for dinner. He has Natures Menu normal or Country Hunter but (and please don't flame me for this) I can't afford for him to have it twice a day. I feel really guilty but we just can't afford £60 a month on cat food!

I'm thinking of giving him one pouch of Natures Menu and the rest one of the supermarket brands. I'm telling myself cats have been fed Whiskas for years he'll be OK...

Can anyone recommend cheaper wet food? I've tried him on Butchers but he wouldn't touch it and Felix makes him smelly.

The patient isn't home with all remaining teeth in tact! Unfortunately he has another dental infection, he has a pocket where his fang used to be and it's got infected. Harry had x rays on his jaw which showed the bone is paper thin so we've been warned he will be prone to more fractures. I'll be glad when DH finishes the cat proofing the garden so I know where he is!

The vet is still waiting for one set of bloods to come back (kidneys) but everything else came back clear. He's got to have liquid antibiotics which should be fun, I'm not looking forward to giving him those! He's back on Friday for a check up so fingers crossed he'll be discharged then.

Can you hide it in those weebox yogurt sticks?

Ive been through all the wet foods with mine ive tried to keep her grain free but it is expensive so ive started her on Hilife Tempt me! Its 50% meat which i think is the highest you can get off the supermarket shelf and works out at 50p a shot. I dont know how good it is but she likes it and ive subscribed to it off Amazon. My vet did tell me shes getting a belly on her so to stick to two sachets a day even though it says 3-4 on the packet. Tescos finest is good quality but i dont like to give her fish every day.

Unlike most normal cats he hates those! Thankfully he loves Hills A/D and has been taking the antibiotics mixed into that. When we were at the vets DH tried syringing into Harry's mouth but unfortunately shot most of it out the other side over me! He's had two days of antibiotics in the A/D so I'm hoping he doesn't suss what I'm up to!

We did have some good news, all his blood tests are normal. He's in pretty good nick apart from his jaw and teeth! He's back for another check up in two weeks time and hopefully that'll be it for 3-6 months.

All the aldi cat food is great, the trays and pouches.

I've got some of those to try - hopefully he'll like them as they are such a good price. Once he's finished his Loxicom and antibiotics I'll try him on a few new ones.

The Aldi small Select pouches are like Sheba.

Oh, the poor little love, and you! He's suffered a lot with his jaw and teeth the last year, hasn't he.

The only other food (grain free etc) that's not too hard on the purse is Animonda Carny. If he's not up to eating much, you could give him the kitten version - more calories, more mushy, even more so with a bit of hot water from the kettle mixed in.

Gourmet Perle pouches are going down well here with MCat, and are on offer at Tesco and Sainsbury at the moment.

Sorry if this has already been suggested, but have you tried soaking his favourite biscuits in a little hot water, to make them mushy? With a bit of something he can't resist like tuna, ham or Lik-eLix folded through it?

Poor lad. The best of luck to him.

Thanks cozie, I'm hoping he has a better 2017!

Rubbish, I'm going to give the Animonda Carny a try. I've stocked up on Natures Menu until after Christmas (spaghetti on toast for me and DH!) and then I'll order it for him. I don't want to mess around with his food until he's finished his antibiotics, especially as he now seems to have a dodgy tummy! Not surprising really as he's had general anaesthetic, an antibiotic injection, Loxicom and antibiotics in his food since last Tuesday!

He's not been eating all his breakfast and dinner but I have a sneaking suspicion he wants his biscuits...

I'm actually quite impressed with Natures Menu. My fussy boy has eaten it well this week (and no vomiting) so I'm going to get some more.

Amazon are doing 4 boxes of 12 for £32.30 making it only 68p a pouch which feels not too bad.

Fetch also had Natures Menu on offer this week. Harry goes through phases of which ones he likes so he's getting them in rotation. He's not keen on the senior version and I'm not surprised as the rice grains look pretty grim, like maggots! TMI here but DH said they look the same when they come out the other end - he thought Harry had worms!

Seniorboy has the Country Hunter. 4 flavours gives him 5 rotated meals which works out fine. He tends to drink a bit more with it and has darker and firmer poos (sorry if TMI) but I guess it has less water in it than some others.

Harry isn't keen on the chicken Country Hunter. I think chicken is far too common for him as he prefers duck and pheasant!

Ha! Does he realise that it's organic chicken? He might change his tune if that was made clear. Grin

I've found that the lilac pouches ('rabbit' ?) are more difficult to source but Seniorboy does need the full four flavours to be contented so I go with the suppliers who can do the lot.

Another fan of zooplus here - I spend 60 pounds a month but I have four cats!

Pouches are expensive - tins generally work out cheaper. Mine have a mixture of Animonda Carney, Grau and Cosma, all of which come in 200g tins, which are handy if you only have one cat. They have Applaws biscuits for supper.

Sorry Harry is poorly - my old boy has a sore mouth too with a tooth abscess. He is a nightmare for taking meds. He has liquid antibiotics and anti-inflamatories. I tried mixing the anti-inflamatories with his food tonight and he ate it - I used a nice smelly fishy variety! Could be worth a try. Going to try it with the antibiotics tomorrow as the nightly battle with the syringe is taking its toll on us all!

Mine both scoff the Iams wet food, but not the fishy favours. These are three boxes for £10 at Pets at Home, so that's 36 sachets. The stuff costs me almost €10 per box in Belgium, so I will be stuffing my car with it next week when I'm back in UK for the uni end of term run.
