I have a cat who thinks he is a Labrador- greedy and very affectionate. After his check up in January the vet suggesting swapping to more dry food as his tartar needed some help.

So he has a small amount of dry food morning and night and occasional pouches instead.

And has gained a jeffing kilo!!

Anyone had similar? I've been advised to cut his dry stuff back by 20% which seems titchy by will do it. He virtually never gets treats and we don't have any neighbours who might be feeding him.

I'm bewildered!

I have an obese cat too in my area it seems to be the norm to not allow pet cats into the house so there is full cat food bowls dotted around everywhere

My boy is on a diet and i try not to let him out too often but hes still big enough that i worry about his health

I wonder if the high carbs in dry makes them obese? Maybe switching to all wet cereal free would satisfy him more?.

I was unimpressed when the groomer called one of mine fat. I thought it was fur. It wasn't. I was forced to agree she is a little chunky. Back to measuring the grub and limiting the treats!

Our vet gave us low fat dry cat food for our overweight Mog! We had cut her portions down to try and stop her gaining weight and cut out all treats, but we'd got to the point where she was constantly crying for food and still not losing any weight. The vet said it seems that she is always going to be a bigger cat (and lazy with it), so we had to maintain the weight level with this low fat food. It did work and she was no longer constantly crying at the food cupboard.

Our old girl was fluffy like that. She didn't eat loads but thy said she was a bit overweight. If I'd put her on a diet she wouldn't have lasted until 19. Health issues caused weightloss.

The Blob is a rescue boy who we've had for two years as a young adult and is very active as we live next to a farm- he was 5.5kg when we got him but think his fighting weight is more just over 5kg.

It's a dilemma between his teeth which are better on dry and weight which means he can only have 24g of biscuits twice a day!

His wobbly belly is nearly touching the ground now!

She's 6. She was tiny when I adopted her. 3.4kg but 10months on is 4.3kg. Her slightly bigger sister is now 4.9kg. She's gained 900g since adoption. I don't think they need to loose any, just not put it on. They're on Royal canin Persian as it's supposed to be low energy especially for lazy Persians. Trying to work out how to get them to do more excercise but failing so far! I'm possibly a little liberal with the dreemies though.

She didn't say anything about her. They both needed to put a bit on when I first got them. They are not greedy girls. Though their appetite has increased a lot over the last week, for some reason.

Can I just say that it doesn't always make any difference - Harry was fed on dry food for years and has lost a lot of teeth and it looks as though more will have to come out

I've got a very fat boy cat and two skinny girl cats. When I measure out the food and take it away between meals the girls stop eating and look even thinner. Boy cat just miaows constantly and starts upsetting the girls. If dry food is down all day the girls maintain their slender weight but fattymcfatface boy cat eats and eats and is getting heavier. He needs to lose weight he is far too big but feel pulled between his needs and those of the skinny girls. And I have to give dry food as one of the girls has awful allergies so they all eat her allergy food.

I had a FatCat. 6 months of hard core dieting and I had a SlimCat. He started out at 7.4kg and we were aiming for 6kg but the vet was happy with how he looked at 6.4kg. He is back on ordinary food now but I am very strict about weighing it out and ignoring his pathetic miaowing.

I measure about 2 weeks of food into little boxes and then spread a box over the day. He also has an anti gulp bowl which means he can't just wolf it down in 3 seconds. It was a hard slog but hopefully it's been worth it in terms on his health.

I have a fat cat, she has been on the obesity diet prescribed by the vet for the last six years, she has stayed at 6.5kg and has not lost anything. I think she's just big boned

I have one 6 pounder.. tiny , feisty and only eats what she needs.

A 14 pounder Maine Coon girl, (meant to be bigger as that's the breed) who is slim, perfectly shaped and only eats what she needs.

And Obie..a 24 pound ginger MC lard arse! He will eat anything.. doesn't matter how much we keep him to 'the correct amount' of food as he six Dinner Sid-s it up the whole street, begging at every house! After his recent shave his ridiculous belly was suddenly apparent, swinging below like old mens testicles! Short of locking him in the house permanently I'm not sure there is any hope for him.

I had hoped this thread would have the magic solution. Darling cat is just a smidgen under 5kg. She has put on 440g in a year. She is on a weighed out portion of dry food twice a day, the odd dreamie, but goes outside and catches her fill from the hot and cold running rodent buffet (mostly field mice). We tried reducing her food... she caught more.

It will likely be the dried food that's doing it - that stuff is so concentrated. Hunting your supper isn't usually too fat-making: so many of the stalks end in failure that cats don't usually gain a lot from it. (Unless, of course, she's thieving or begging for supplementation? Do you have any neighbours?)

I know it's hard. Bibi is overweight and if I took my eye off the ball for a second would be obese. She has a fairly low food requirement combined with a huge appetite and an early experience of deprivation. Zara self regulates perfectly.
