New cat has worms

Can someone please give me some advice.

We picked up our new cat yesterday. She has fleas, worms and it's possible she's pregnant.

We straight away treated her for fleas, and took her to the vet this afternoon where she was given a worming tablet. However 2 hours after the tablet she has thrown up all of her food from the day, so I'm guessing the tablet has come up too. (I tried to look to see if I could see it, but couldn't see anything.)

Does anyone know if I can give her another worming tablet when I go to the shops tomorrow? Or is this dangerous for her in case the tablet today is somehow still inside her?

I'm getting so stressed as we have a toddler who just wants to cuddle the cat

Hi there Fox. Welcome to the Litter Tray.

You're being put through it a little, that's for sure. I'm guessing she was a private acquisition given she was in that state? What did the vet say? And what products were used to treat her?

The vet should sell you another one, I wouldn't use over the counter drugs if you plan to continue with the pregnancy and over the counter stuff is rubbish anyway.

Yes I got her privately, which I realise now was silly. The vet gave her a tablet for the worms. I'm afraid I don't know the brand. We gave her stronghold drops on the back of her neck for her fleas yesterday. The vet is unsure if she's pregnant but said we'd be able to tell within a month by looking at her

Thanks fluffy. As awful as it sounds, I don't think we would be in the position to continue with the pregnancy. The vet said they can spay her next week if we make an appointment. I think I'll have to give the vets a call in the morning

No, it's not 'silly' - just that rescues normally treat for these things automatically and have the cats neutered as well.

Did you want to continue with the pregnancy? I would have thought that you could have her spayed directly if she's not that far advanced.

Thank you both for being so kind. I have been crying non stop with the stress of all of this. I know that sounds a bit dramatic, but I just feel so awful. We thought it'd be lovely to have a cat in the house but now I'm not so sure, which makes me feel so guilty I think it just seems worse as she miaowed literally (and I mean LITERALLY) all night last night so we hardly slept and are therefore feeling tired and emotional. I guess the miaowing is to be expected as she's somewhere new. Things may seem better after a good sleep (although I'm sure she'll miaow all night again tonight so it's unlikely we'll sleep)

Is she confined to a quiet room with food and litter tray? Has she got a comfy bed and somewhere high to hide?

I hate the thought that she has worms with DD in the house, which may not even be being treated (as she threw up). We've had to spray and air the house and wash our bedding due to the fleas. Every door is being kept shut to contain her to one room - also a nightmare with DD. This isn't how I imagined it and I feel like I've been irresponsible

Yes she's confined to the kitchen as of tonight. She has a cat bed, food, water, litter tray and she can jump onto the table/work tops (although obviously I hate the thought of this due to fleas and worms. There's no other room she could be kept in though)

If she's unspayed, it's not impossible that she still has hormones coursing through her. Add to that new people, new environment etc etc and she might be very edgy. I appreciate the whole worms and fleas thing - especially with DD - but you're at the low point right now, I reckon.

You haven't been irresponsible and it will get so much better. My own boys sleep with me every night and I can't snooze happily without a furry body tucked into me and groaning in contentment.

Ah, poor you and poor cat! The previous owners sound quite irresponsible

Tbh, even without the other issues, keeping a new cat in one room for at least a few days after getting them is a very good idea to help them settle in. Our two were confined to the dining room for a week before they were allowed to venture out into the rest of the house.It would be a good idea to keep the little one away from the cat until she settles in too, as no doubt they would be very excited to see her, which would be stressful for the cat until she is used to her new surroundings.

Hopefully in a few weeks all this will be sorted and you'll all be enjoying her a lot more.
