So fed up - any advice?

Next door neighbours have decided they don't want their cat any more so have left him outside. Poor little tom cat spends all his time crying outside my back door desperately trying to get in.

This has been going on since November. I have a neutered female cat who due to this not neutered cat refuses to go out and is getting so upset she has started messing in our kitchen.

Poor little cat is breaking my heart but this whole situation is getting me down, he is waking my toddler every night with his crying - various animal shelters wont take him in due to space and the general conversations seem to go why dont you just keep him. Cats protection were so rude when I phoned telling me if its not my cat its not their problem and to get owners to sort out a new home for him (yeah because people who can just dump their cat like that are going to do that).

Oh dear. Where did he go in that recent cold snap? He's lucky not to have frozen to death.

I'm a softy so I'd take him in and neuter, vaccinate and adopt him. We had to take a neighbours cat in when my mum found him eating the scraps she left for the hedgehogs. It was freezing and he had an open wound. She bought him in and he never went back to them.

I'd be doing the same. Where on earth is he sleeping at night? It's bitter out there.

Do you have a shed you can give him shelter while you sort things?

If your neighbours don't want him, could you try to find someone to take him.

I couldn't just leave him - he might not be your problem, but if we all thought like that no one would ever help anyone else.

I'm afraid you might have to be proactive. Is he getting any food?

He is sleeping in our shed at the moment (dp going spare cos his bike is rusting) and being fed.

I have given him flea treatment and we tried bringing in him in the house but then our cat started soiling in the kitchen and trying to attack him so he can't stay indoors.

I have phoned all shelters and sent pictures but no one is able to get him - he is such a sweet cat he deserves a good home but so far I am not getting anywhere.

I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to leave him out there, it is so cold and we had horizontal sleet here this afternoon. Can you provide food and shelter for him (even a big plastic crate on its side with a blanket in it is better than nothing). And in the longer term his prospects are pretty rubbish as an unneutered tom - is there any chance that you could get him neutered? It is a lot cheaper for males than females and if you have an understanding vet they may be able to help out for less cost???

Cross posted - glad you are giving him food and shelter. I do think neutering is the next step (sorry) or else he will stand little chance of a new home (or could be killed on the road when wandering, as unneutered males tend to do)

I'd take him to a cat shelter & deny all knowledge of his previous home.

Have you actually been told by the neighbours that they don't want him? If so, then he's abandoned and you could become his new owner and have him to the vets for neutering - which would be the first step for him, I reckon.

Yeah they told me he was "doing their head in" but the amount of cats and kittens they get through is disgusting I have reported them but it makes no difference and now get abuse when they see me in the garden.

I have lost my job and really cant afford the taxi to vets and to get him neutered. All the shelters have my details and the cats, I am awaiting a phone call that hopefully someone will have room for him. I would love to keep him but I cant see how I can get my cat to accept him Sad

Poor boy. At least he has you to look after him. If you are in London I think CHAT (Celia Hammond) can help with neutering? Or if you get certain benefits the PDSA or blue cross subsidise neutering if you are near any of their centres? Come springtime he will probably be gone in pursuit of females Sad

Thats what I am worried about at the moment he is still a baby - it wont be long until he goes off tomming.

Not on benefits but my partner is getting working tax so may have a look see if there is help that way. Not in london we are in south wales. Living in a shed is no life for him and I get so angry that these people are allowed to keep doing this with absolutely no consequences.

Ah, South Wales. My family live there. Attitudes were a bit behind the rest of the U.K in regards to animals. He's just lucky not to have been drowned.

Castration prices vary across the uk (my jaw hit the floor when southern relatives paid best part of a £130) so it would be cheaper than the cost of spaying your female.

They sound like cunts of the lowest order though.

Where are your neighbours getting their constant stream of new cats and kittens? I wish there was some way of bringing them to people's attention. Fuckers.

Oh that's heartbreaking. I completely understand you can't take him in if your cat is stressed out by him though. I would never normally suggest this, but if the shelters haven't room for him (and the ones here seem to be at capacity too - it seems like an especially busy winter) could you advertise on Gumtree or on Facebook? I know it's taking a chance but him being out in this weather is taking a chance too.

Well he is in - my cat is keeping a very close eye on him, but seems to be slowly accepting him ( I hope).

So fed up - any advice?

Yeah he is the black and white one. He is surprisingly patient with her and is giving her same space but she is being very stubborn. Heres hoping she comes round Smile

Even if the shelters have no space for him they may help out with neutering. When we had a semi-stray unneutered male hanging round our house I spoke to our local shelter and they would have paid for him to be done. In the end he was unfortunately killed on the road before I got round to it (he did have an owner of sorts who put a series of pink sparkly collars on him, but left him untreated for fleas (done by me), ungroomed (he was a longhair) and intact as well as hungry (fed by me). I was hesitant to effectively kidnap someone else's cat and have him castrated, but in retrospect they probably would not have noticed and it might has stopped him wandering quite so far). Next time I will be more proactive. Well done for taking pity on him.

If your anywhere near Aberdare I know a rescue who give out vouchers for neutering.
