Do not feed your cat chicken legs

We lost our beautiful cat Lexy traumatically this afternoon. She choked on a chicken bone. We tried to get her to the vet but she died in the car. I've had her since she was 1, before I met dh and had the children.

You poor, poor thing, how awful!!
I'm so sorry for you and for Lexy. I appreciate you posting this - mine have been known to pinch chicken bones. They won't from now on.

has the advise on chicken bones been lost over the years? we never ever let our cats have chicken bones as they are known to break up and can kill them.

May I just add another? Lilies! Hardly any of my cat owning friends know they can be fatal to cats. I've requested warnings on them at my local supermarket but they did nothing.

It's been advice for many many years not t give animals bones (not cooked ones anyway). I'm so sorry cot your loss but how did you not know that?

Thank you for replying with kind words. I'm writing this through the tears. It's an awful situation as I'd warned dh before but he thought he was giving her a treat and she was miaowing for it. He feels utterly responsible and it was just so traumatic for all of us, rushing her to the vet (she was still breathing) but it was closed. I think the strain may have been too much for her at aged 15. She died in the car. My 9 yr old dd is inconsolable. How I wish we could turn back time. She was the sweetest, most affectionate cat. Her cat 'sister' who is 17 will wonder where her companion has gone as well.

Oh your poor DH, I can imagine how awful he feels but he did it out of love. He wanted her to have something nice. What a traumatic thing for you all to go through.

How sad for you all, so sorry, this must have been incredibly distressing.

It's just the thought that she always used to follow me through to bed (in fact, used to miaow at me to go to bed!) and sleep on my legs all night, then miaow at me to get up in the morning. It's so hard to accept that she's gone but I need to be brave for the dc. Thank you everyone for your support. I really do appreciate it. X

Being brave for your dc absolutely sucks. I know. I am so sorry you had this terrible shock. Telling us all your story may well have saved others. I knew about it for dogs but not cats. The raw food idea that many people are tuning into doesnâ??t have this warning so far as I have seen.
You have suffered a bereavement - I have lost a parent so I don't use that term lightly. Please be kind to yourself.

sparky uncooked bones don't splinter like cooked bones do so the danger isn't there. And a lot of the raw food diet is served ground up.

I'm so sorry for your loss, thank you for caring enough about other kitties to post the reminder warning.

It can happen so easily, I know. A few years ago, one of mine came in late evening really clawing at his face, neck and cheek, in some distress. The vet was just about to close but I whipped him over there and it turned out the little scavenger had got hold of a carcass and there was a biggish, flat bone wedged between his teeth up in the roof of his mouth. We were very lucky and I'm so sorry that you lost your cat today :(

Goodness how awful & what a trauma for your family to go through. Give yourself time to deal with the shock you're in & then to grieve. Your girl clearly had 14 very happy and much loved years with you, remember that. So sorry for your loss xx

Yes, quite a few people have told me that they know not to give them to dogs but hadn't heard it with regard to cats. I had read it somewhere so hadn't done it personally but as I said, poor dh didn't think he was doing any harm. She was still breathing for quite some time. I'm beginning to think that the strain of trying to dislodge it was too much for her heart at age 15. She was getting thinner and vet had suspected kidney issues, but she was still eating, drinking and behaving normally. Poor Lexy.

Kreeshsheesh my beloved cat also died this weekend and I'm heartbroken. His best cat friend looked high and low for him :-( which was painful to watch but has had lots of attention and thankfully he seems to be ok - who knows what he is thinking.

The only thing to do is focus on the many good memories you have of Lexy and know that you gave her a lovely life. Try to remember the way she moved, how her miaow sounded, what her fur smelled like etc. Don't think about how she died anymore. She is young and agile forever now.

It might help you all feel better to give her a nice burial in her favourite place if you haven't already. I'm going to get one of these for my lovely boy as he will be cremated. urnabios.com/product

Oh no, I'm so sorry. Poor Lexy. Your poor DH too. We all hear the warnings and I'm forever telling DH not to give our cat chicken on the bone after Sunday lunch. He seems to think these things don't happen and I'm too much of a worrier. I'll tell him about Lexy xxx

You poor thing. I had my 19 year old pts a week ago. It is horrid and you miss them so much. Don't waste time feeling guilty and awful. Be thankful for all the good years you gave her.

Wolfie I'm so sorry to hear that. So very hard Semper, please do warn your dh not to do it. I wouldn't want anyone else to ever go through this.
