OMG! My cat is doing a weird thing!

Old boy cat, 17 years old.

Has taken a fondness to a new blanket DD has. But now he's doing something on it. I'm not sure if he's trying to hump it, or spray on it. (I don't think he can spray if he's neutered, can he?)

A new cat moved into the neighbourhood recently and sprayed in my kitchen yesteryear Angry so not sure if that has something to do with it.

What is my cat doing? It's disturbing and ....wrong.

They can certainly spray (or 'hump' Grin) if they're neutered - even neutered females can spray although most don't. It depends whether they're stirred up enough.

How did the new cat get into your house? That could be the problem if your cat has never done this before and at his age.

Both of my boys are humpers.

It's often a display of dominance, so completely ties in with what you said about the interloper.

Does he bite the blanket, moving around in circles, with his hips and tail twitching? Because that's cat-humping.

I'm torn between finding it hilarious and disturbing when mine do it.

My boy cat (neutered) used to close his eyes, drool, rub his front paws and hips against our velvet throw. You couldn't break through the reverie at times. It was equal parts amusing and horrible.

I've got a humper. It's grim. He particularly loves furry throws and my cashmere jumpers (particularly if I'm still wearing them). It's unusual for a cat to suddenly develop this habit in advancing years. Normally they've always done it.

If my cat gets on anything soft he sort of pumps his front paws up and down on it and dribbles a bit. Once he's had enough he climbs off and gives himself a good licking!

The kneeding I'm drooling I'm used to....the humping never seen before.

He must be, what 80 years old in human years? And now he starts this behaviour!

I've washed the blanket.

I thought the kneeding was like a kitten trying to get milk from it's mother, and I think he was taken from him mother at a very young age (he was a rescue kitten) - I thought that was why he and his sister did the kneeding thing. Or have I been wrong all these years?

No you're quite right about the kneeding. But kneeding and dry humping are two different activities:)

PicklePig has always kneaded anything that stayed still long enough but when I bought him a new fleece blanket that was it, hump central.
He goes into a trance, does 4 leg kneading, thrusts his hips, drools and eventually shakes violently. Then he sits and licks himself.
Revolting cat.
He was 9 when the proper humping started. So I think they can do it at any time.

Goes for it at least once a day now.

What is it about fleecey stuff? He only started when I got a fleecey onsie.

I expect cats give thanks to the fleece god. Their version of a blow-up doll.

Our old cat would have a sexy fit if he got hold of a feather boa.
He would attack and hump it. It was hilarious. And disturbing.

Is it wrong that I want to buy a feather boa now just to see if PicklePig will hump & attack it.
If dh leaves his fleece dressing gown on the floor PicklePig works his way into a sleeve and then writhes around like a sexy sausage roll.
I've told dh to hang his dressing gown up but he ignores me, I just leave it there now & let the cat hump it.

Ours was part of a friend's fancy dress costume. She didn't want it back.

The trouble is that whatever age they might be, if they discover something that is .......pleasurable........ it's like discovering chocolate eclairs late in life. You plan to keep on doing it for as many years as you have left.

I suppose you could try distraction of some sort......

My cat does this humping to me. Just me. Not blankets or anything.

He gets very intense and makes lots of eye contact. It's a serious matter for him.

I find it very oppressive. Of course everyone else finds it amusing...

I don't think people do find it amusing although they may try to make light of it. It's just that if the cat is neutered and of a decent age, there's pretty well nothing you can do about it - you just have to find a way to live with it.

Doesn't bother me at all. He doesn't know he's being 'dirty', it's just something he likes. I find his facial expression hilarious, like you say Zinxie it's a very serious matter to the humper :)
