The Naming of Cats

A la T.S Elliot of course.

Mine are Portia (play on 'paws' and I love Shakespeare) and Morpheus (RIP) the god of dreams.

It is inevitable that a new Maine Coon baby will enter our lives and hearts in the next few months, I cannot be without two cats and Morphy has spoiled me for anything but another Coon, so I am sure I will be searching for the perfect name again before too long.

How did you name your cats, and why?

I named Amadeus his name as he seemed grand, he filled out the name. Plus he rocked it :D
Hector was named as such as it's a name I love.

Next cat, well, we shall see x

sashh · 26/07/2014 07:26

Posted this before.

Her Mistyness started life (well life with me) as 'mystery cat' or 'spot', this has evolved in to

Maquessa Gatta Misteriosa, hunter of legs, but dad to day she is Misty.

RubbishMantra · 26/07/2014 08:29

Izzle is named so because that's what his breeder's children called him and DH kept the name.

Avey is named after Avey Tare of Animal Collective. Apparently Devon Rexes are the 'rock stars of the cat world', so appropriate he is named after a musician. He is a very gregarious, practical kitten. Grin

GerundTheBehemoth · 26/07/2014 10:40

Lately I've only had fosters and they've mostly had names already, which has meant putting up with somewhat rubbish names like Pickle, Mittens and Snowy (though I learned to love all the names eventually, esp Mittens!). The last cat I named was a semi-feral tabby kitten, called her Coco because it just seemed to suit her, though when she went to her permanent home they promptly renamed her. Before that the last two I named were Pixie and Judy, after characters from Prisoner Cell Block H Grin

My sister's kids have named all of their many cats, they have come out with some... memorable names, incl Lobster, Elvis, Shrek, Mississippi, and most recently Ice T.

Sorry to hear about Morphy, I saw some of your threads about him and he sounds like one awesome cat.

fenneltea · 26/07/2014 11:15

Jaffa because he's orange and rather round; Ichabod because he's a plain black cat that needed a 'different' name; Tansy because she was found living in a flower pot; Tinker, Tansy's kitten because she was a little tinker;
Mouse who is a tiny brown and white tabby found living in our wood pile like a mouse, and finally Gandalf, or Alfie for short as he is grey and white and will not let the dogs pass on the stairs!

sashh · 26/07/2014 12:31

My friend fostered a kitten who we named Hermione.

There was a certain synchronicity when she found her forever home, she went to live with a ginger tom called Weasely.

PestoSurfissimos · 26/07/2014 12:33

Ours have always come pre-named, so not had the luxury of choosing them.

MarchEliza · 26/07/2014 12:35

I adopted a cat earlier this year and I really wanted to call her Druscilla (for some reason) but when I found my perfect moggy it just didn't suit her at all.

She came with the name Harry (which also didn't suit her at all) and the lovely lady who had fostered her before I adopted her said 'please give her a new name!'

My DP suggested Mimi which is perfect as she is a chronic attention seeker (it's all very Me Me Me with her) and she seems to have accepted it. Smile

exWifebeginsat40 · 26/07/2014 12:51

Stella. after my ex-favourite beer. i don't drink any more!

she is of course also Stella McCatney, pussing-cat, fatty or madam.

Lovesabadboy · 26/07/2014 12:54

The little girl we adopted back in March had been handed into a vets practice. (We found her through the Cats protection website). The lady who handed her in was apparently so upset that she just handed her over and shot off.
Consequently, they did not know her name or any history, so the girls in the vets named her Tiger Lily.

It did actually suit her but was not something I could imagine yelling up the garden, so we renamed her Pepper.

She is black and semi long-haired and really suits it - and it didn't take her long to get used to it either.

One daughter wanted to call her Pepsi and, funnily enough, sometimes 'Pepper' is shortened to 'Pepps' which is altered to 'Pepsi'...so everyone is happy!!

We found a cute kitten and named it Ellie - a play on the road name we found it on.

Took kitten to vets on the Monday who said it was a boy - changed name to Dexter as I've always wanted a cat or dog by that name.

Male boxer then gets confused by family shortening kittens name to Dex as his name is Max.

Have a family meeting and change name again - he's been Tom ever since.

LittlePink · 26/07/2014 13:30

Our cat is China. She was already called this when we got her from the rescue. We have various nicknames but the one that sticks the most is Chinkles or Chinkley Dinks. I find a new nick name for her every day but these are the most commonly used. Shes such a beautiful girl :-)

GemmaTeller · 26/07/2014 14:21

Poppy is called:

P
Pops
Peapod
Poppydoppy
Poppydoppydodah
P-dop-a-lula

TeenagersDriveMeMad · 26/07/2014 14:29

OH (the twat Smile ) has decided that the new kitten (arriving in a week and a half! eek) will be called Catticus Finch Hmm . He likes To Kill a Mockingbird and it was a condition of getting the kitten that he got to name it. I have a feeling it'll be shortened to Finch or Fin fairly quickly Wink .

JuniperTisane · 26/07/2014 14:39

The lion is called Tango because he's orange. DH wanted to call him something unprintable and in very poor taste Hmm. He was overruled big time when I pointed out you couldn't call it from the door without offending everybody in earshot. He generally gets called Patty though (because he has patty paws)

The snowshoe is Zebedee which was his name when we adopted him aged 3. He is generally known as Mr Wu.

MoonlightandRoses · 26/07/2014 14:43

We have a Dante because "cats are in fur, no?" (Teenagers, you are not alone - that was a DH 'inspiration'...) and had a Tybalt, just because it seemed to fit (he was a bit of a schemer).

BetweenDogandWolf · 26/07/2014 15:00

My old girl is called Sid, inspired by the book, Six Dinner Sid, because she turned up as a very very hungry stray. I couldn't get close enough to find out she was female then so she is a female Sid.
The other two are less interesting. Smile

Little shit
Luna-paloona
Ploon
Little lady (that's when I get home and she's all snuggly and purry)

BikeRunSki · 26/07/2014 16:36

Tour de France stage winners. Barry (Hoban), Eddy (Merkx). Next one will be Wiggo I reckon.

GingerPuddin · 26/07/2014 16:43

We have catamunda which is shorted to moo or miss moo if she's being prissy. Grendel because he's a monster to the local bird population but loves his mama. Plus when we found him as a kitten he was really I'll and covered in snot and looked horrible. He grown into a gorgeous furry brickshit house of a cat. And ginge cause... well it's pretty self explanatory.

BitchyHen · 26/07/2014 16:45

Our cat is called Mack. He was a rescue and had been named Blackie, but I didn't want to be shouting that in the street. He also gets called Mackie and "my favourite child". Dcs are teens and I tell them Mack is the favourite because he never answers back.

LittlePink · 26/07/2014 17:36

Both our cats growing up (we had them at different times) were called Pussy. I was only a child and a teenager and wanted other more interesting names than this but my parents went with Pussy. It was embarrassing bringing friends home, the name got many sniggers, especially from the boys from school that used to come round. My mum still calls our cat China Pussy when she comes to stay which always gets a sly giggle from DH (hes very immature haha!)

Babushka.

Her breeder called her Kate Bush and wanted us to call her Katie but we weren't keen so went with something else Kate Bush themed! Have since found out that it actually means Grandma in Russian (Kate Bush also didn't know this when naming the temptress in her song!) but as she is such a serious thing it quite suits her.
