My cat is angry all the time

My cat is a ginger tom with issues. He was a stray and is obsessed with food - he finishes his bowl within ten seconds and could never eat enough. He's on a diet because he's fat.

He's angry all the time though. I've never known a cat with such a temper. He shouts at us ALL EVENING until we feed him. He looks at me and pushes things off the coffee table. He strides angrily around the bedroom in the mornings. He doesn't play - he pulls his scratching post over, beats his toy mouse around the head and sprints off. If he could slam doors he could.

He's getting very unpleasant to live with. What can I do?

Has he been neutered?

He sounds bored and fed up. Is he neutered? And was he previously used to going out but is now an indoor cat?

What has the vet said about food? Dried takes much longer to eat

We give our greedy guts cat kibble in one of those ball things. The cat has to roll it around the floor to make the food fall out - makes it more challenging and entertaining?

Huge sympathy for you firstly. I've never had any significant success with feliway tbh.

Can only suggest one of those balls you put treats in? Just put his regular biscuits in that would usually go in his dish if his diet is very strict.

Are there any games he will tolerate? What about a red spot (but played responsibly with a reward etc)

Yes, I posted about him before (called, my cat has turned into a right dick, and also a thread about my neighbours feeding him a lot). We're just at a loss!!

Yes, some things have changed:

1. he was ballooning and we found out neighbours feeding him. We told them not to and he went to a new house for food. We eventually told all neighbours (v embarrassing) but then he went out and it started raining and we had a text (my number on his collar) from a NEW neighbour saying he was over there and scared of the rain. So at midnight on Xmas eve we had to go to a stranger's house in our pyjamas to carry him home and from then we've kept him in. But to be honest he's a dick when going out or not.

2. He has two whiskas pouches a day but between 1 December and 1 January put on 0.8kg taking him over 7kg so he needs to eat less. Have been splitting it into four meals a day where I can but this makes him more fractious/obsessed with food cupboard and means he shouts almost all the time (he literally meows every 3 seconds for HOURS).

3. I have recently gone back to work after being unwell, but I'm only out two days a week. Last night I got in at 8ish (long hours job) and he went beserk, up and down the stairs about 100 times, stood on my dressing table and pushed everything off, then did a big angry poo in the litter tray

He's also really clingy. He's NEVER EVER EVER not in the same room as me and this morning I woke up with my hand on the pillow and his face IN MY HAND. He likes to greet me at the door/shout at me through the kitchen window as I park on the drive and then do lots of frantic kneading on me when I'm in.

Yes he's been neutered.

Tried the biscuit in ball game but he simply sat on the ball and crushed it. I was so embarrassed.

He looks at the origin of the laser very disdainfully - he's not fooled for a second.

He has got a wind-up mouse that he loves/hates and he beats it (enough to cause cranial haemorrhages really) and then he goes and hides in his little house (DP refers to is as his psychiatric unit because he only ever goes in there when playing has got too much and he can't cope......)

He's mad, isn't he? Am I going to have to LTB?!

2 sachets a day isn't enough for a big tom cat I don't think. I have a tiny old female and she has at least 3 plus biscuits overnight

I am hooting with laughter, mainly because he looks so delighted with himself in that picture. And also because of the big angry poo.

Two sachets is nowhere near enough - I have very elderly cats on 3 each.

Have you tried Feliway spray? Apparently it's really great for chilling out cats. Failing that, valium

He needs to lose weight though - so I'm deliberately not feeding him enough. Seriously, he's dangerously fat.

He is gorgeous 3 pouches he will still lose weight if he gets enough exercise and doesn't snack elsewhere. My cat was like him huge teh vet always laughed and said she couldn't say much as he was healthy otherwise. he died recently and it was nothing to do with his weight and I am glad in a way he had 11 years of what he really loved FOOD!

Angry poo sequences goes like this:

Run up and downstairs a few times.
Push vase over.
Go to foodbowl and do a big yowly shout.
Go and bat the keys hanging from the inside of the front door.
Pull door to downstairs toilet open so forcefully that it hits the wall.
Do angry dance in litter so it starts coming out of the bathroom in arcs.
Squat while making eye contact with owner and do steaming shit that smells 400% worse than other shits.
Do not cover it up, saunter out of toilet, pleased with self.
Push owner's kindle off coffee table.

Yes, had a feliway plug in diffuser for all of November, didn't notice a change in him.

BigPaws you've just made me snort in the office. Colleagues shooting me suspicious glances. Your cat looks lovely - I don't think I've ever seen a cat actually grin before! I'm sure he's just playing, my cats do ninja impressions all over the house when wanting to play. A cat tree is also often very popular, and you can try playing with ribbons. I find that at least 20 minutes of play when I get home from work makes for a happy and slightly less lunatic kitty. Also, I have given in and accepted that my main role in the lives of my cats is the provision of food and also places they can knead (lap, legs, hair etc)

He sounds like a proper character, you make him sound hilarious! :o In that first photo he doesn't half look smug. :o

Sorry but that is hilarious!

Ahem. What about playing with him more? Mine is quite psychotic and also does deliberately stinkier than normal poos when cross but a good solid half hour of proper playing (which is knackering for me so must count as exercise) wears her out and should also help with the weight problem... We have one of those synthetic duster stick thingies which cost £1 from Morrisons, as it's nice and big so she can wrap her arms around it, bite and really kick the holy fuck out of it. She loves/hates it a LOT.

Can also be used for dusting, if you don't mind a crazed cat attacking it whilst you dust.
