My cat is angry all the time

My cat is a ginger tom with issues. He was a stray and is obsessed with food - he finishes his bowl within ten seconds and could never eat enough. He's on a diet because he's fat.

He's angry all the time though. I've never known a cat with such a temper. He shouts at us ALL EVENING until we feed him. He looks at me and pushes things off the coffee table. He strides angrily around the bedroom in the mornings. He doesn't play - he pulls his scratching post over, beats his toy mouse around the head and sprints off. If he could slam doors he could.

He's getting very unpleasant to live with. What can I do?

Cozie I agree with you. Mr Cory has been to the vet! He has had a lot of blood tests. He hates going out and has insisted on sleeping holding paws (mine) since he got back.

Some cats are just free spirits. I rather suspect that BigPaws is giving house room to one of those.

It may be that there's no remedy other than letting him roam freely as he clearly wants to do, feeding him nice nosh when he deigns to visit and enjoying his company when he's around.

Might the little love have piles? I often feel like a good shriek in same circs.

Oops. Plastic bag and nip round there quickly!

My cat was exactly the same. He was a stray constantly, yowling for food, never wanted to play, had lots of 2nd homes but he was lovely. I just feed him the recommended amount of food after a diet that didn't work, he was just a big ginger tom. Unfortunately he got what my husband calls 'the aids' and just stopped eating and went skinny and lethargic so we made a choice to PTS. Of course this meant the cray small black cat had to be FIV tested which traumatised both of us Confused

Just let Benjamin out. He did a steaming, huge poo in neighbour's flowers then stood on the high fence that divides us and did a very long celebratory howl Blush

No - we rent off DP's sister and it's a total no. Also the front looks out onto main road and the back had the conservatory problem. We are saving to buy though, so hopefully he will have freedom one day! Grin

Bigpaws, we used to rent and were told no pets but we got a little cat. I had a glazier come out and fit a cat flap to kitchen window. Would hide it with plant pot for yearly inspections and little cat always sat on window outside! When we moved just paid to have glass redone. Maybe something you could do?

Wants out again is my bet. He was likely just touching base with his home and is now testing the waters to see if free movement is back on the menu. I'd go to the door and see if he follows you, still yowling.

Grin they said he sat on their swing so much they had to buy a spare one for him as he is so big!

he's just got back and has had a love-in with his favourite catnip bird, now is standing in front of me howling. WHY?

'- made the neighbours buy him his own special swing'

How? Blackmail? twisted their arms behind their backs? Gun to their heads? Or just did a big angry poo at them? Grin

He's a free spirit.

A few cats are. They won't let themselves be trammelled by the normal household rules so all you can do is accept their idiosyncracies and provide them with love if they drop in.

I've had one like that and they're the very devil for making you worry.

He's SO FRIENDLY. The RSPCA's description of him was 'friendly and confident'. 'that sounds nice,' we thought. How wrong we were...

He has:

  • got into bed with two neighbours
  • let himself in and lounged on the sofa of another neighbour who was doing her first workout after having a baby. She turned around to see obese ginger cat o her sofa and thought she was hallucinating from exercise
  • made the neighbours buy him his own special swing

I'm afraid, OP, your cat is a more than usually callous little tart Grin

Ours were born feral and refuse to speak to anyone who's not me or DH, unless given copious amounts of ham properly introduced. And even then it's just ham, no strokes and DEFINITELY no picking up.

Your cat sounds like the exact opposite Grin

Ok, I've let him out. He's been gone for a couple of hours.

But my neighbours did do this: - what if they steal him!

Put on a do not feed me collar, inform neighbours ,let him out and feed him later at night so that he comes in.

I think he isn't angry but stressed because he wants to go out!

I hear what you say, BigPaws, but I suspect that you now have a choice that doesn't face everyone - an overweight cat who may not live so long or a demented and unhappy one. (It's usually possible to do something about overweight with some sort of compromise.)

That's just my very personal view though. Whatever you decide, I wish you all the best of luck.

Seriously, I think your cat wants to go out more. We have two, the grey girl cat is a slightly podgy heat-seeking lazybones who likes to sit on a radiator and watch the birds through the window; her brother is an outdoorsy little soul who climbs up the pergola and tries to disguise himself as a blackbird. Any time we've shut them in for any reason she couldn't give a stuff, but he's whingeing and fidgeting within a few hours.

Some cats are just gobshites. Our silver tabby runs around after me sometimes going 'Wengggg! Wengggg! Wenggg!' at the top of her voice and jumping up on things and staring intensely. It's not usually obvious what she wants second helpings of dinner probably.

Saying that, I think yours wants to go out and play. Can you get him one of these?
