Awful awful weekend :(

One of my cats started with vomiting Wednesday. I tried her on cooked chicken Thursday night and she ate a bit, but nothing on Friday. So Saturday night with was off to the vets. They gave her some stomach settling medication and an injection.
No improvement by Sunday night so we took her back in. She was dehydrated, and have now been diagnosed with acute kidney failure. She is on IV fluids and dialysis.

I am so so sad and worried, we are still hoping but it's not looking good :(

You poor thing. How old is she? Is she at home now, or at the vets?

Dcat collapsed with kidney failure at Easter, I thought when we went to emergency vet I'd be having her PTS as I'd thought she'd had a stoke. She was on a drip for 24 hours and pulled through - I'll be keeping fingers crossed for you and her.

Oh dear, when can you ring the vets? Do they know what caused it?

They don't know what caused it yet, she's having more tests today. She's in the vets still and we can phone for an update later, and visit this evening.
She's 6.5years, so not that old. I am so so sad and scared for her :( praying she pulls through.

Any news, talulahbelle ? With that treatment, I'm guessing she's quite young?

DH called the vet mid morning. Apparently her condition has improved, she's purring, and they are hoping to get a urine sample.
We have to call back at 5 to see how she's getting on and can visit her later as well.

I burst into tears at work today all over my boss. God knows what he thought of me.

Glad she's improved. Could she have ingested something nasty - eg antifreeze (if she goes out) or plants such as lilies?

She has kidney damage, still on a drip. The vet is going to keep her in another couple of days to see if she recovers enough to come off the drip. Basically her kidneys can no longer concentrate urine enough. If she does come home she will be on a special renal diet for life. If her kidneys don't get better enough then she will have to be PTS :(

No, possible ingestion of poison but no idea where from.
I felt heartbroken leaving her at the vets again tonight. She was a little bit brighter, as she was no longer dehydrated, and she purred to see me.
Just got to hope and pray she improves enough to come off the drip.

Does she go outside? I was just thinking that this might be the time of year when people are putting antifreeze in things - and being careless with it.

Anyway - fingers crossed for her.

She does, although never very far. That was one of the vet's ideas. Keep crying when I think about her alone at the vets :(

No - don't cry. Cats are great pragmatists when it comes to being separated from their people. She'll be feeling better for the treatment, warm and safe. (And if your vet practice is anything like my vet practice, the duty nurse will be giving her lots of loving talk if she's up to it.)

I was thinking of antifreeze as a cause as well - awful stuff. I wish they would add something to it to make it unpalateable to cats

Sorry to see your so bad - I was just the same with Dcat when she at the vets' kept crying all day....However she's in the best place and hopefully getting lots of cuddles from the nurse (& hopefully will soon be up to hissing scornfully at the other cats if she's like mine).

Our vets suggested anti-freeze too, as well as Lilies - but got put down to an age thing in the end as our cat is 12.

Really hope she gets better.

Apparently, people put antifreeze in these garden water fountains/water feature things - which is just the sort of thing to attract a cat. (I don't have a water fountain myself.)

Antifreeze is much less likely as she is producing urine antifreeze forms crystals in the kidneys and prevents urine production, plus with antifreeze you usually get neurological signs - sadly I have far to my experience of this.
Lilies and distinct possibility it is the pollen that is the poison. Raisins are another possibility too.

Now raisins I didn't know about.

Useful information about the antifreeze, Lone. Do you really see a lot of cases in your practice? It's hard to imagine that so many people would be being so careless given that it's wildlife generally which is at risk and not just cats. And children also.

Wishing her all the best, I really hope she pulls through. I didn't know about raisins, so noting that one. Apparantly garlic and onions are not ok either.

She's home! Amazing improvement overnight apparently, although she has to go back in for another blood test tomorrow. After urine tests they now think it might have been an infection (even though she didn't have a temp) so she is also on antibiotics.
DCat is a lot happier, purring, eating her (new expensive) renal food, and sleeping in her bed by the radiator. :) :)
