My cat is about to give birth

Eeeeeeeeeeeeee! This is her 5th litter, yet she still won't let me leave her side (she's a bit odd). She began nesting yesterday morning and the contractions began about 10 minutes ago.

Grin Do you have to do anything or do you just leave the mum to it?

VikingVagine · 29/04/2012 09:06

I just let the mum get on with it, but I'm checking the kitten's temp and that he's sucking ok (which he isn't really this morning Sad , and he's a little cold because of the lack of siblings to snuggle up to).

In the past she abandoned one litter (the only time i wasnt present at the birth) and they didn't survive but all the others have been fine without me doing anything. She's being very attentive to this one so I hope it'll be ok.

Things have taken a turn for the worse, kitten is cold and not sucking, I've had to take him under my jumper with a warm bean bag, will try and give him some formula once he's warmed up. God knows what I'm going to do tomorrow as have to go to work.

Sparklingbrook · 29/04/2012 12:20

Oh no. That doesn't sound good. What is the Mum doing?

Sparklingbrook · 29/04/2012 12:32

If I were you I would phone the vets or the local cat rescue and get some help. If he is still the same in the morning you will have to find someone to catsit.

VikingVagine · 29/04/2012 12:36

He's nice and warm now so I've put him back in with mum and popped the bean bag under the bedding and am keeping it warm. No rescue centre in the area, will phone the emergency vets if he gets too cold again.

How is kitten this morning? Smile

VikingVagine · 30/04/2012 12:13

He's still alive, we're going to the vets this afternoon but don't hold much hope; he's got a cleft palate. He's not feeding properly and when I drip feed him it comes out of his nose. We've managed to keep his temperature up but I think the cleft is too important to be operated on. Sad

:(

Sparklingbrook · 30/04/2012 13:14
Sad
VikingVagine · 30/04/2012 13:30

Little kitty is no more. Vet said he had virtually no roof in his mouth and no chance of survival so he was put to sleep. Sad

He said we really need to think about putting mum to sleep too because of her exema. Sad Sad Sad

We've come home for now, mum's been looking for baby, and is now cleaning her (grown) daughter (who's enjoying the maternal affection). the horrible weather is pretty appropriate for my mood right now.

Oh I'm, so sorry Viking. Sad

crazynanna · 30/04/2012 13:43

oh no Sad so sorry

That is a hard decision about mummy cat.

Is her eczema really bad?

VikingVagine · 30/04/2012 13:54

She's had skin trouble since she was tiny, sometimes it's more or less ok (a few patches here and there) but for the past couple of years she has had eczema on more than half of her body, with big areas where she's scratched and licked herself bloody.

She's been on various different treatments, pills, creams, injections, nothing has worked. I have made her customised baby grows, put a collar (lampshade) on her yet she still manages to scratch.

Four different vets, all have said the same thing: there's not much that can be done.

Other than the eczema she's a lovely cat, she's really cuddly and friendly and doesn't seem too bothered by the skin issues other than when she's licking/scratching herself (which isn't non stop, but is several times a day).

I can't go through this whole kitten thing again, it's heartbreaking, but the vet maintains that operating on her isn't an option, and that the chances are the deformed kittens are due to her being on the pill.

Argh. Sad I'm going round in circles trying to make a decision.

That's so :(.

I'm not sure I would PTS though - not unless she has a lot of pain/a poor quality of life.

SoupDragon · 30/04/2012 14:32

Oh :(

ripsishere · 30/04/2012 14:44

Big decision to be made.
Can she have an implant to stop her getting pregnant? I know nothing of cat reproduction except the spiky penis in a man.
Poor mummy cat, at least she has another she can groom.

VikingVagine · 30/04/2012 14:47

You can get implants for cats??? None of the vets have mentioned this!

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 30/04/2012 16:22

I think there is such thing as an injection?

JKSLtd · 30/04/2012 16:31

So sorry Viking about the kitten :(

Really hope you can find something to help the Mummy.

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/04/2012 21:06

Could she be a house cat? if I was offered house arrest or pts I know which one I would choose.

So sorry you lost the kitten.

Would a raw food diet help? you can get them frozen now. Not cheap.

Nyac · 30/04/2012 21:29

Poor kitten. So sorry Viking. :(

VikingVagine · 30/04/2012 21:58

Can't lock cats in our house, windows and doors open most of the time, plus people coming and going non stop.

Still haven't made a decision yet, am going to take some time to think about it, and looking into contraceptive implant.

Well I have just got back from the vets. Mum is no more. It was awful. He gave her the anaesthetic, then told me to put her back in her cage, I asked to keep her in my arms, and he kind of shrugged. He left the room for about two minutes then came back and said right, let's go, and he gave her the lethal injection; she wasn't even asleep she was clawing at me a meowing in pain, the vet seemed uneasy and said something along the lines of oh dear, not quite asleep were you. I feel so sick.
