Best cat litter?

We use a clay based clumping litter but our cats get it on their paws and trail it all over the house - yuk! Can anyone recommend one that works as well i.e absorbent and non-smelly, but doesn't cling to the cats paws?

I like wood chip the best personally.

MassiveKnob · 03/01/2011 11:10

i second wood chip.

All the others stink after one wee. But the only prob with wood chip is that it turns to sawdust and flicks out everywhere so i have a litter with a lid.

Wiggletastic · 03/01/2011 11:34

We have a litter tray with a lid but they won't use it with the flap closed so we have it taped open. Of course, this means the litter gets flicked out and trailed round the house. I'm not sure wood chip is for us if it's likely to get everywhere like the stuff we are using now. Any other suggestions?

Catsan. And a tray with a lid. Mine won't use it with the door shut either sadly.

Wiggletastic · 03/01/2011 11:40

Fussy little buggers aren't they! Is catsan in bigger bits that won't stick to their paws?

I use the Tesco's value cat litter. Id doesn't get trailed around the house, just a few bits around the tray where they have been burying their poo. I just sweep it all up at the end of the day and first thing in the morning

MollysChambers · 03/01/2011 11:43

She doesn't seem to trail it but she does throw it about when she's pooping so still goes everywhere. Very good at absorbing smells so that's why I like it.

Geepers · 03/01/2011 11:53

I use catsan clumping litter. A few bits outside the tray but we have a mat to catch them on. Clumps well and doesn't smell. We use our tray for two. Cats and take out litter three times a day with a complete change and wash of tray once a week.

EllieDawn · 03/01/2011 13:34

I used Bob Martin crystal cat litter before we got ours trained to go outside, its expensive but is really good at preventing smells and doesnt stick to the cats paws or the bottom of the tray.

Ponders · 03/01/2011 13:41

Pets at Home do one made of paper - it looks like the wood-based ones, but doesn't turn into dust the same way.

\link{http://www.petsathome.com/shop/lightweight-non-clumping-recycled-paper-based-cat-litter-12ltr-by-bio-catolet-25872\oh it isn't their own, it's Bio-Catolet}

This one is non-clumping but there's a ref in the description to a clumping one; however we only used it in the bottom of a rat cage, not as cat litter, so I can't vouch for smells or whether it sticks to paws.

walkersmum · 03/01/2011 14:36

I love Purr and Simple, don't need much and keeps the smell better than others I have tried

fruitshootsandheaves · 03/01/2011 14:39

I like Sainsburys clumping as its easy to collect up the clumps and doesn't smell until it's quite full!
It doesn't stick to their paws but they do have a tendency to kick it out over enthusiastically sometimes!

SecretNutellaFix · 03/01/2011 14:50

We use the Sainsburys' Ultra clumping fine litter- looks like fine sand which our 2 seem to prefer to even catsan. Must be less uncomfortable for them to stand on. some gets kicked out when girl cat tries diggin to Australia, but it vacuums up really easily. we go through a bag a week

Wiggletastic · 03/01/2011 14:52

Been to Tesco and got some Catsan so will be cleaning out the tray and trying it later. If it doesn't work out I think we might try the crystal one. Thanks for all the recommendations - I knew I could rely on you MNers for good advice. Smile

I recommend the crystal one. It lasts for a month, you just hoof out the turds and give it a bit of a stir and it's fine. We also have a Modkat litter tray, which has a textured lid which a) keeps any smell in and b) the textured surface means that any stray litter gets knocked off their feet (but the crystals are big so it doesn't usually happen).

Geepers · 03/01/2011 16:18

Catsan do a clumping and a non clumping so make sure you have got the sort you want. I got the non clumping cats an once and hated it.

Simbacatlives · 03/01/2011 16:27

Catsan- no smell at all. Lasts forever- just fish out lumps. Tried some others mentioned but could smell the poo the time. My cats now refuse to go past dog at night to go out and so I have a litter tray upstairs in an empty room ( no walls etc ) and so lack of smell is really important.

SecretSquirrel193 · 03/01/2011 16:46

Biocatlet in this house, the only stuff that seems to contain the rancid poo my kitten produces! I have 3 cats (2 massive boys and the dainty kitten) and I find this stuff fab - Catsan was too quick to stink of urine and I was changing it at a mental rate, but this stuff is working for us :)

IlsaLund · 03/01/2011 18:02

We use the crystal one - either Bob Martin or Pets At Homes.
It is expensive, but it lasts for ages.

earwicga · 03/01/2011 18:41

Wood chip.

Made the mistake of buying the gritty one before xmas as forgot to buy the wood one in Tesco. Horrible stuff.

The crystal one does last for ages, but my cats seem to spread it round and I hate crunching round the kitchen on it.

CarGirl · 03/01/2011 18:44

We use sophisticat gold

www.petplanet.co.uk/product.asp?dept_id=519&pf_id=52710

We tried lots of others but this is this absorbs the smells best for our cats, it's about £4.99 in our local Tesco. It was the wee that was causing the whiff for us.

MrsSchadenfreude · 03/01/2011 20:00

Earwicga - especially the yellow crystals! Grin

earwicga · 03/01/2011 20:04

Oh yes!

zoezebraa · 03/01/2011 20:05

another vote for catsan, white pebbly one, not clumping.

SecretNutellaFix · 03/01/2011 20:20

car girl- that's basically what the sainsbury's ultra fine is. A £1 cheaper as well.
