Dog died this afternoon and I'm distaught

My dog died suddenly from a seizure today.

She was 16 and had been on a slow decline since November with liver problems but she had a walk this morning and was doing ok.

In the midst of eating a meal she had a seizure and died within minutes. It wasn't a horrific seizure but lots of panting and then she lost consciousness and slipped away.

I'm in shock. Taking her body to the vets was absolutely horrific. I just don't know what to do. My home is so empty without her.

I’m a cat person but the love of a pet is real and strong. Think of that lovely walk she had this morning. She got to end her day in her own home with her family there.

MaggieBsBoat · 20/02/2026 21:33

Oh I am so so sorry @Idontknowhatnametochoose for your loss. Of course your home feels empty. What a terrible thing to happen. I am so sad for you both. 💐

Pallisers · 20/02/2026 21:34

I am so so sorry OP. But what a lovely way for her to go - just as WonderfulSmith described. I also have a 16 year old dog and I live in dread. I'm really really sorry.

Velvian · 20/02/2026 21:34

I'm so sorry @Idontknowhatnametochoose . Do you have anyone else at home? Is there anyone you can call?

Do you want to tell us about her?

Get yourself a blanket and a hot drink and have old favourite on TV in the background.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 20/02/2026 21:37

Thank you all for your kind words. She was such a faithful little friend who has seen me through the deaths of both parents. I'm just devastated.

Oh I'm so sorry, that must have been awful to go through. It's devastating anyway when they die, but going through that..

the only 'good' things are is it was pretty quick & painless compared to going through liver failure, which is nasty to go through & they have no concept of death/dying, just slip away

But horrible for you.

Be kind to yourself!

Big hugs 🤗 🥰

MaggieBsBoat · 20/02/2026 21:41

Please tell us about her. What was her name? What a beautiful wee thing.

Oh she's gorgeous!

it's so so hard when they've been through big life events with you 💕💕

but honestly, please try to take a small amount of comfort from the fact that she slipped away & didn't have to deal with the pain of liver failure ❤️‍🩹

Carouseloflife · 20/02/2026 21:43

Similar happened to one of our dogs, it was so sudden and shocking. I’m really sorry for your loss, you’re probably in shock too. All you can do is take a day at a time, just look after yourself. We found comfort in knowing that we’d given ours the best life. Just take time to grieve and remember that your dog was well loved.

RandomMess · 20/02/2026 21:44

Awww she’s adorable. The searing pain of losing them is hideous.

💐

borntooobesilly · 20/02/2026 21:47

Your doggie looks absolutely gorgeous .Am so sorry and can only imagine how awful this was for you.Try and be comforted that for her she had the best way to leave this world without you having to make that horrible decision that so many have to make for our beloved pets . Am truly sorry 😔

Zoey. I loved her so much. I don't know how to cope without her. I live alone with just my cat now.

I'm so sorry. She knew she was loved and loved you too. She was with you and her last thought will have been that. She was with the most important person in her life. Perhaps try to think that she had a job to do, which was to comfort you, and she completed that task. It was time to go. 💔 💔 💔 🌈

sundayvibeswig22 · 20/02/2026 21:49

I’m so sorry. She was a gorgeous girl! Xx

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 20/02/2026 21:50

I really appreciate all the comments about her having a good passing and how it's better than liver failure which would have happened eventually. I will take some comfort in that even though it's a terrible shock.

I’m so very sorry for your loss of Zoey , I can’t ease your pain but biggest hugs xx

Thundertoast · 20/02/2026 21:51

Oh im so so sorry OP. What a gorgeous girl she was. Im sure you gave her the most wonderful life.

PurpleNightingale · 20/02/2026 21:51

My boss gave me two days sick leave to grief the sudden passing of my dog. I never would have thought to ask for it but I really needed it. I haven't cried that hard for some relatives. The empty hole left in your everyday is huge. Please take some time to look after yourself and cry for a couple of days... whatever helps process the shock.

beccahamlet · 20/02/2026 21:52

Sudden is awful for you but the very best for your lovely little dog. Plus you didn't have to spend weeks/months agonising over whether to have her put to sleep. She had a long and happy life and a quick death. It's all any of us can hope for.
It's still horrendous, but you don't have to feel guilty or regretful. Just very sad. Hugs. I know what it's like. Xx

StephensLass1977 · 20/02/2026 21:59

When my darling dog passed around 2 years ago, after that horrible vet visit, I lit a candle and just watched it as it flickered. That helped a little.

It was so unexpected and he was so young. I tried to watch some movies that same day, but I couldn't focus. I was just staring at the screen for hours. I think you sort of have to feel the initial pain to then start to heal.

I talked and talked to my partner about it, and he I. As pps have said, do you have anyone who can pop in, or who you can call? I think company is vital right now.

Now I can look at pictures of him without crying. It is so clichéd but it's actually true that soon enough you will be able to look at photos and smile/laugh/enjoy them ❤

My dog also helped me through so much stuff. Before I even knew I had Covid 3 years ago, he didn't leave my side. They just get it, don't they? They trump most humans for me, any time.

I'm so, so sorry. Please accept my best wishes.

Chiefangel · 20/02/2026 22:05

Your little Zoey was a beautiful wee girl. You are grieving and it is painful and raw. I lost my girl 3 years ago to a massive out of the blue seizure and still miss her desperately.
Please remember that you gave Zoey the best life ever and your little dog was happy.
Look after yourself, you have had a massive shock. Sending love to you right now.

Climbingrosexx · 20/02/2026 22:28

So sorry for your loss, it really is heartbreaking. I lost my dog over 2 years ago and still shed a tear now. Allow yourself to grieve and be kind to yourself. Have you read the Rainbow Bridge poem? It's not everyones thing but I find it comforting. Remember you gave her a lovely life and you, the person she trusted most in the world were with her at the end❤

You must be in massive shock OP. Whilst a better death by being quick and at home, it sounds like it was very distressing for you.

I promise it won’t hurt so much soon. Your mind will find it easier to focus on how wonderful your life was together. But for now just get through the next few mins, and then the next few after that. Hope your cat is not being aloof and hangs out with you more than normal for a while!

My cat is clearly upset and doesn't seem to know what to do either. She is sleeping in the other room which seems to be her way of coping. She loved Zoey and they used to lay together.
