Dog died this afternoon and I'm distaught

My dog died suddenly from a seizure today.

She was 16 and had been on a slow decline since November with liver problems but she had a walk this morning and was doing ok.

In the midst of eating a meal she had a seizure and died within minutes. It wasn't a horrific seizure but lots of panting and then she lost consciousness and slipped away.

I'm in shock. Taking her body to the vets was absolutely horrific. I just don't know what to do. My home is so empty without her.

I’m so sorry, Zoey was absolutely beautiful. It’s devastating when they leave us.

We lost our wonderful boy 18 months ago and I still cry about him, I miss him so much. I’m not at all religious but I find myself wanting to believe in heaven so that I can see him again. I know that sounds really crazy.

It honestly doesn't, I get it.

I'm so sorry. The shock of it I'm sure makes it 10x worse. I had time to prepare for my dog dying. It did make it easier. My cat was killed in front of me. I literally thought I was going to die myself. You will come to terms with it and in time you will find great comfort that she passed over this way. But right now, it's shit. Will be thinking of you. It really is the worse thing.

I'm sobbing reading it.

I'm sorry I should have said it makes me cry everytime, but it does give me comfort too 😢

My cat is clearly upset and doesn't seem to know what to do either. She is sleeping in the other room which seems to be her way of coping. She loved Zoey and they used to lay together.

Has your cat seen her? She needs to know she’s process it too.

I’m so so sorry. Zoey looked wonderful.

we lost our marvellous Labrador last summer. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through. We have two young children who couldn’t comprehend death and myself and DH actually found their need to continuously talk about him quite cathartic. Now we speak of him often and remember funny things he did or trouble he used to get up to. Kids are very honest and will sometimes say they’re sad and miss him and I always agree - we talk about what he’d be doing now. I’ve honestly found great comfort in keeping his memory alive.

We also got a large a2 print up of him in our lounge that a local artist did and it’s a fantastic reminder of his big lovely chops. I talk to that picture a lot!

We buried his ashes in the autumn with some forget me knots and tulips which I look forward to seeing soon and thinking of him.

He saw me through two children, a devastating diagnosis and death in the family. He was my rock and I think it’s perfectly normal to feel all the feelings you are. Just know that it will ease with time, but missing them never goes away, you just learn to remember the good times and smile xxx

It's fine, I found it very comforting.

Yes, I showed her before we went to the vets as zoey was clearly already gone. I wanted to make sure my cat knew what had happened.

I’m so sorry to hear that about your cat, mine is wondering why I’m making such a fuss of her right now.

So sorry for your loss op. I’m grieving hard too tonight and just wanted to let you know you are not alone x

Chinsupmeloves · 20/02/2026 23:01

Of course you are, it's heartbreaking 💔

I found comfort in the rainbow bridge forum as talking to family and friends was supportive but assumed you would get it over it quicker.

For me i couldn't, was totally devastated 😢 xx

SabreIsMyFave · 20/02/2026 23:03

Awwww, I'm so sorry to hear this. She had a wonderful life with you though, and lived to a great age. 16 is brilliant! 😘

She is absolutely adorable. What a cute face. ❤

Lots of love to you, and your cat, and your family. xx

It's one of the very worst pains, I actually thought I'd die of a broken heart when my little one passed, also after a long and happy life. I genuinely believed I'd never get over it, I definitely didn't think I'd have any more dogs (years later I'm in love again). You never forget them, Zoey will live in your heart forever, we can tell you gave her the best life, take one minute at a time, in time it hurts less, you'll be able to look at pics without crying. Sending big hugs x

spiderlight · 20/02/2026 23:50

I'm so very sorry - what a shock for you. She was beautiful. There's no pain quite like it, is there? Thinking of you.

Luckypoppy · 21/02/2026 00:02

So sorry. Sending you love and strength

ComedyGuns · 21/02/2026 00:14

I’m so sorry OP. I can understand exactly how you feel - we have two young, non-sibling cats who adore each other and who are adored. Losing them is going to be very, very hard. Sending love and hugs ❤️
