Anyone else’s dog moulting like mad? Roo came to the pub with us yesterday afternoon and was loving all the attention but there was literal fur flying off him every time someone stroked him 🙈. There was a hen party setting off for their night out that loved him but left with a full sprinkling of orange and white labrador glitter 🙈🙈.

SpanielsGalore · 26/04/2026 11:20

@TheHungryHungryLandsharks How very dare they?! Poor TD. Obviously a thicko who knows nothing about anything.

V-day is Thursday, so don't know if that counts as 3 or 4 days of imprisonment left. I'd say 4, but DS says 3 as a day doesn't count once it's started. Her op was February 13th. It's been a long 11 weeks.

@Idstillratherbepaddleboarding My lot seem to moult all year round. Everything I own is constantly covered in white hair.

Talking of hair - have I told you all how brilliant my vacuum cleaner is now I have cleaned my hidden filter? 😂 I can do all of the downstairs without it cutting out 10 times. Plus it doesn't smell doggy anymore.

@SpanielsGalore I think it was his size that confused them! And they didn't say it rudely it was in response to a child asking what he was. I just patted him on the head in a 'don't worry darling, I know you're a Golden and you're very pretty' type way 😀

Gosh 11 weeks. Doesn't time (not) fly? I agree with your DS.

@Idstillratherbepaddleboarding - yep! It's that time of year. Mine are losing fur in huge clumps. I groomed them all yesterday and today there are still clumps falling out of them. Honestly at this point you'd think the little gits would be bald, but nope.

How was he in the pub? DWS still gets a bit excited if people pat her in public - she barks if they stop. So I tend not to let them pat her to start with...

It's so lovely and warm at the moment, I hope everyone is enjoying the weather. I am developing a lovely tan from all the dog walking and working in the garden when I'm not in the office. I'm hoping to avoid the situation I found myself in two years ago where I worked remotely for a full week (and did it in the garden) and got so horribly burnt that the next week when I went into work, my skin was still peeling and I left little clumps of skin wherever I went😳I figured if I start early, i'm less likely to get burnt...

SpanielsGalore · 26/04/2026 11:41

@TheHungryHungryLandsharks It was 8° but feels like 6° here yesterday. It's 11° today. My living room is 14/15°. My hands are like blocks of ice, so I have just put the heating on. But I will agree it is nice to see the sun, even if I can't feel it. 🌞
I might attempt to cut the grass later if it dries up enough, whilst wrapping up warm in a coat, hat and gloves. 😂

VanGoSunflowers · 26/04/2026 11:51

@SpanielsGalore why were you eating dandelions? At least if you get a male and you give him to me after him and Pablo can wear each other out 😂 really hope first day of freedom is successful for you both!!

@Idstillratherbepaddleboarding yep, it’s coming off Pablo loads at the moment too. He is black though, most of my clothes are black and my house is dark so it doesn’t show up too much! I gave him a good groom in the garden yesterday and I could have kept going and going with the amount that was coming off him!

@TheHungryHungryLandsharks poor TD! How can anyone mistake him for a mongrel?! Also good shout on getting in the garden early! My garden is like a sun trap it gets so hot out here I don’t think I could work out here if I wanted to! I am convinced I am solar powered though so I may try it…

tizwozliz · 26/04/2026 11:56

We started the day at -1 yesterday and it got up to 22. It's playing havoc with my clothing choices. Mine don't seem to be moulting any more than normal, which fortunately for my vacuum is not too bad for labs. Unfortunately they are very unsatisfying to brush, hardly get anything out.

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 26/04/2026 12:43

@tizwozliz we've been the same! was 2 at 7am this morning. It's now 17. I've been starting my walks with my coat on, but had to take it off half-way through and finished the walk sweating!!

@VanGoSunflowers ohh no! I'm quite lucky as ours tends to have a nice breeze, even when it's very hot. Not sure why though. I do have to put a towel over the back of my laptop though, and take it inside every 2 hours to re-charge the battery 😂But I find if I WFH in the garden in summer, I get far more work done - if I'm inside, I spend the whole time staring outside.

@SpanielsGalore do your girls chase the lawn-mower? Just wondering as Satan does and she tries to jump at the wheels and bite them 😂Rabid little monster.

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 26/04/2026 13:24

@TheHungryHungryLandsharks he was great but it’s out local (only actually!) village pub and he’s very well known in the village 🤣 so he was basically out to see his friends and we were just there to escort him, in his mind at least! I did pop him home for a bit as he was getting too hot and then took him back after his dinner.

@VanGoSunflowers I thought Billy’s black fur would be worse but Rory’s light fur is soooo much more obvious 🙈🙈.

Rory’s halo has slipped this morning as DH was making a bacon, Brie and cranberry sandwich for “brunch”. He opened the Brie and cut a bit off for while his bacon cooked and then left the kitchen… well I don’t need to tell anyone what happened next…

SpanielsGalore · 26/04/2026 15:30

@Idstillratherbepaddleboarding At least Rory waited until your DH left the kitchen. My ex once made himself a chicken sandwich. As soon as he turned his back to put things back in the fridge, my sprocker launched into action and snatched it off the side. DS and I found it hilarious. The ex, not so much. 😂

@TheHungryHungryLandsharks I haven't started yet, as I forgot to put the battery on charge before I walked the dogs. But from what I remember of last year, N isn't interested in the slightest. P will get in the way, sniffing or lying on the section of grass I am mowing and won't move for love nor money. K started off wary, but by the end of the year was attacking the wheels.
I find it funny (not ha ha) as P and K are scared of the vacuum cleaner and will leave the room. You'd think the lawn mower would be more scary.

Silverbirchleaf · 26/04/2026 15:41

Dog is definitely moulting a bit more than normal.

Had agility class yesterday. Fortunately, no cold wind yesterday, so lovely to be outside in the sun having fun.

Today, Dh and I went Broadstairs which was lovely. Nice walk and a Morellis icecream.

Did some car training earlier. Ds sat in drivers seat. Turning engine on was fine (more interested in frankfurter sausages). Ds opening window freaked him out. Why? He’s not particularly noise phobic ( fine with fireworks, bird scarer bangs etc) but this really got to him. Didn’t properly settle afterwards.

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 26/04/2026 16:33

🤣 TBH DH is being a miserable dickhead today so I regret going to the shop to get him some more.

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 26/04/2026 17:44

@Idstillratherbepaddleboarding well, at least you know it's your place to escort him out to see his friends 😂He's got you very well trained.

Sounds a bit like your DH deserved to have his brie replaced. I hope Rory enjoyed his snack 😁

@SpanielsGalore Satan is the same. She's terrified of the hoover, but will attack the lawn mower like some sort of demented seagull. Perhaps it's a spaniel thing. My lot just lay there being stupid and pointless. But that's pretty much how they react to any situation...

@Silverbirchleaf what flavour ice-cream? I have to admit I am a bit of a weirdo and like pistachio or coconut.

That is interesting. I wonder if there's a high pitched noise when the window goes down that he can hear but humans can't? Poor boy.

YorkshireFelix · 26/04/2026 22:57

Sorry I dropped off the thread for a while but have been lurking. Been trying to settle dd into her new school but not going super well. And I start my new job tomorrow! So stressful all round. V is being a bit of a dick generally, not really sure why. He’s decided he’s going back to pulling full throttle on his lead and doing his best sniffer dog impression 24/7. We’re going to start training plan with the new guy in a few weeks time so I am looking forward to hopefully transforming him into an angel dog.

V is terrified of the vacuum cleaner and tries to attack it. I mowed the lawn yesterday but kept him inside with the window slightly open and he watched me through the gap looking sad.

Another one massively moulting here. It’s driving me mad. His fur gets everywhere anyway but it’s 10x worse at the minute.

@SpanielsGalore I can’t believe you’re almost at the end of crate rest! It’s been so bloody long!!!

YorkshireFelix · 26/04/2026 22:58

Here he is not actually being a dick and sitting nicely outside the restaurant whilst I drank an iced latte in the sun today 🌞

SpanielsGalore · 27/04/2026 09:45

@VanGoSunflowers Perhaps that's the answer. I should join in with the dandelion eating. 😂 Apparently they are medicinal. Someone who lives in Tenerife told me dandelions don't grow wild over there, so people grow them and sell them at the markets. I could make a killing. There are were 1000s here.

I have had my heart set on a liver working cocker for years, so be prepared for brown hair all over the place. (I did initially ring up about a liver boy, but the breeder persuaded me that the black bitch would be a better fit.)

In some ways two dogs are easier than one, as they do entertain each other. P has only ever played with dogs she lives with, so it's nice for her to have a friend. And she helped keep K out of trouble as a puppy. Dread to think how much hard work she'd have been as an only dog.

@YorkshireFelix Sorry things aren't going well for your DD and that V is being a dick. Hopefully the new trainer can help sort him out.
I hope you have a good first day at work. 💐

71 hours and 15 minutes to go. 🥳
God help us if she's not allowed freedom after the next appointment. 🙈😫😭

OP posts:
TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 27/04/2026 12:46

@YorkshireFelix sorry to hear your DD is still having a difficult time - really hope she settles in soon and you/DH are taking care of yourselves as well ❤

Best of luck for your first day today!

V's little teeth are so pearly white. Do you clean them?

I cannot wait for shedding season to be over. I've taken to grooming the dogs in the garden and leaving the fur out for the birds - left a huge stack yesterday in a tub by the shed and this morning it's all gone...so a bit worried that the fox took it instead 😂

Only a few days left now @SpanielsGalore. I wonder if P is picking up on your excitement/anticipation yet?!

SpanielsGalore · 27/04/2026 15:26

@TheHungryHungryLandsharks I think I am more anxious than excited. Dread turning up and being told she still isn't allowed her freedom.
I'm running short of sedatives, so have dropped down to 2 a day. P is now higher than the kite she was before.
K will lose her mind when she can play with P again. She's currently running backwards and forwards, bashing on the bars and playing footsie with P.

K has recently started going crazy when we get home from a walk. Running from room to room. Digging the carpets. And today has added in running round the house with the cushion pad from out of one of the dog beds. No idea why she does it.

It's 12° in the shade here, but 24° in the sun. Makes choosing dog walking clothes fun. You're either too hot or too cold.

Silverbirchleaf · 28/04/2026 10:51

Where has summer gone?

SpanielsGalore · 28/04/2026 11:16

@Silverbirchleaf Still quite pleasant here. 12° and sunny, which is about as good as it gets. 😂

@VanGoSunflowers Saw this on FB this morning and thought of you and Pablo. Don't know if it helps at all, but I thought it was interesting after our recent discussions.

VanGoSunflowers · 28/04/2026 11:29

@SpanielsGalore That’s it then, let’s all move to Tenerife and sell dandelions 😇 and looking forward to receiving your liver male spaniel 😂 probably not as much as Pablo would look forward to it though, bless him!

That is an interesting post, do you know I never even knew adolescence existed in dogs until joining the dog house. People talk a lot about how much work puppies can be but never this stage. I’ve done a butt load of reading up on it and it does help to understand that his pre frontal cortex isn’t mature yet and he will almost always act on impulse given the chance so I try and mitigate as much as possible, keep training and training and telling myself that it is a phase that he will grow out of and sometimes call him a dickhead because it makes me feel better 😂
I also really hope you get the news you are hoping for from the Vets and things start getting easier for you all!!

@YorkshireFelix how was your first day? Sorry to hear V is misbehaving and hope your DD is ok.
Pablo tries to play with the hoover. His categories seem to be “can I eat it or can I play with it?”

@TheHungryHungryLandsharks I never thought about birds using dog fur for nests! Not sure if Pablo’s fur would be as nice and soft as your goldens though! So much hair everywhere, I’m wondering how much of it I have accidentally eaten.

@Silverbirchleaf really cold and overcast here today! I want to know who I can complain to!

SpanielsGalore · 28/04/2026 11:49

@VanGoSunflowers I called P a tool, just as a young lad walked past us the other day. I think he knew I meant the dog. 😂 Many a time I have given a dog a treat for a very delayed recall, whilst calling them some expletive or other in a sing song voice.

I don't know why adolescence isn't talked about more. With the exception of P, I have found the adolescent stage to be much tougher than the puppy one. They have lost their puppy cuteness and you expect them to be sensible adults. Instead you get teenage delinquents.

OP posts:
TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 28/04/2026 12:23

@SpanielsGalore she'll be granted her freedom!!! How are you going to manage K & P together when P can run wild and free? Conscious K might get her a bit too excited and inadvertently make her damage her leg again...

100% agree about adolescence! DWS isn't quite there yet as she's still not really mentally mature, but I can see her gearing up to be a nasty little nightmare bugger when she hits about 14 months. So will make the offer now: anyone want to take her on for a year or so? Just whilst she grows into a good dog...

I would take fifty years of a dog being a puppy (under 12 months) over one month of adolescence.

@VanGoSunflowers you mean you don't enjoy a bacon and dog fur roll? They're a delicacy in my house 😂

We're getting perilously close to the end of the thread (again!).

It's really cold here today, but when the sun breaks through it's really warm - so like everyone else I am struggling with what to wear. I start the walk off with a coast and then after about thirty minute I'm drowning in sweat. It's so grim

VanGoSunflowers · 28/04/2026 13:00

@SpanielsGalore I talk out loud to Pablo too on walks 😂 and have definitely done that same thing of trying to ‘praise’ for a delayed recall when all I want to do is tell him to stop being a twat!

Agree with you and @TheHungryHungryLandsharks - adolescence for me has been harder than the puppy stage and I’m strapping myself in for it continuing for a good long while yet! Maybe only another year if I am lucky 🫠

@TheHungryHungryLandsharks Pablo would love DWS to come and stay for a while but I worry he would make teach her bad habits! Perhaps we could swap instead?
Not a fan of bacon and dog fur sandwich. Can just about get on board with a sprinkle of it on my coffee though 😂

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 28/04/2026 13:45

@VanGoSunflowers Give me your address and I'll ship her off. I can't take Pablo though. One uncastrated boy dog is enough for me. I couldn't cope with two - boys are way worse than girls!

What about fur in your mouth when you brush your teeth? That's a common occurence here 😫

SpanielsGalore · 28/04/2026 15:16

@VanGoSunflowers My DS tells me he can't be held responsible for anything he did under the age of 25, as his prefrontal cortex wasn't fully developed. 😂

@TheHungryHungryLandsharks I really hope P will be allowed her freedom. Restricted walks we can cope with. I'm going to video her first off lead trip into the garden. Can you imagine the carnage!? Perhaps I should let her out on her own first.

I am worried about something going wrong again. Or the ligaments rupturing in her other leg. How many times can you subject a dog to operations and months of crate rest? I guess we decide that if we get to that bridge.

The temperature here depends on where you are walking. Round the village, it's hot and t-shirt weather. Get to the beach with the sea breeze and you need a coat on.

I've been lead walking K down to the sea front for walks, as I am without my car. We do around the same length of time as we usually do, but it seems to tire her out so much more.
