I seem to be getting in a muddle with when to feed ddog which is ridiculous given he’s 6yo πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚

Ive always fed him once a day around 5pm as when I’ve offered him food in the morning he usually wasn’t interested.

Then recently he’s had issues with a chicken allergy and reflux which have meant we’ve changed his food and have to encourage two meals a day.

Im now finding he’s getting up and pooing in the kitchen overnight which he’s never done before.

He’s gets two walks today, one of which is around 8pm for 45 mins or so, ddog is a terrier mix small breed around 7.5kgs.

Anyone got any advice? I wondered about just feeding at breakfast and lunch?

We do morning and early afternoon. So morning walk and then breakfast around 7:30am. Afternoon walk and lunch around 2:30pm. Then evening walk around 9pm with a very small treat when he gets in.

JBJ · 06/01/2026 21:31

We’ve had to split into 3 small meals else he throws up yellow bile. He gets breakfast when we get up, but often doesn’t eat it until about 10am. Next meal after we’ve eaten at 6pm, then a tiny amount after his last walk at about 10.30pm (but it is literally just a mouthful at this time).

noctilucentcloud · 06/01/2026 21:34

Can he come and get you to ask to go out in the night? I sleep with my door ajar so my dog can come in and ask to go out if needed. I find it takes my dog a few days to get back on to his usual poo schedule (ie not nights) after an upset tummy.

MajesticWhine · 06/01/2026 21:39

We feed them at about 8am and 5pm.
They have a last short walk round the block at 10.20pm then a little treat at bed time.

Chickenwing2 · 06/01/2026 21:40

8am and 6pm.

you need to speak to the vet if suddenly aged 6 he is pooing inside.

visionpools · 06/01/2026 21:54

We do morning and early evening, usually after walks.

I wondered this but he’s completely fine in himself and it’s normal poo not loose or anything (sorry tmi.)

If changing the meal times doesn’t help I will speak to the vet.

He sleeps upstairs and sometimes I hear him go downstairs so will get up and let him out but the last few nights I haven’t heard him. He doesn’t bark or anything to let me know he wants to go out.

About 7 and 5. My husband thinks they have to stick to strict mealtimes but when he’s away, I feed them much more flexibly and they’re just fine.

Midday and 5pm. Hungarian vizslas.

DarkEyedSailor · 06/01/2026 22:14

That is an incredibly adorable dog.

Mine is fed 7.30 am and 5pm.

Blanketenvy · 06/01/2026 22:15

My also small 6.5kg terrier X gets 2 meals a day. 7am and 4.30pm plus puzzle toys Kong's etc in between. She'd eat until she popped if given the opportunity.. Usually pretty good but will occasionally go through stages of having a middle of the night poo, I think this is mostly because she is v lazy when it's raining and dark and so will avoid going outside to toilet at those times.

ItsStillWork · 06/01/2026 22:21

My small dog poos at night if she’s fed too late.

i feed her at 8am and again at 3-4pm.

if she’s fed later than 4.30 then she poos in the night

DinoLil · 06/01/2026 22:22

7.30am and 5pm. I have a staffy and she makes sure I know if I'm a minute late.

My girl is 2 and we have always had flexible mealtimes ☺️

weekdays breakfast will be anytime between 07:00 and 08:30, weekends it might be as late as 09:30.

lunch is anywhere between 12:00 and 14:00

dinner sometime between 18:00 and 20:30

i know some people whose dogs know exactly when dinner time is, but it’s seems that as we’ve always kept it varied, she can go with the flow and trusts she will be fed 😍😍

KurtCobainLover · 06/01/2026 22:25

I feed my chihuahua at 7.00am and 5pm. Any later and I wake up to a little present on the bedroom floor (she sleeps with me).

WinterOnItsWayOut · 06/01/2026 22:28

Same as @BarbarianBabs we are v flex. Usually between 6.30am and 9am and between 5 and 7.30pm.

This is what we do too.

What I'll also say though, is despite being fed at the same times, they both have totally different poo schedules. So it might be just a case of trial and error to see what works for your pup.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 06/01/2026 22:30

Sounds like this might be a common ish issue with the smaller breeds when fed too late, thanks I’ll try earlier and see how it goes.

My dog has ibd and is on a special diet, so 3 small meals a day.

Before that 2 feeds, 7.30am and 4pm

FairViewRosie25 · 06/01/2026 22:32

7 to 8am depending when they wake up. This time of year 45 min long run walk at 12pm then both sleep like little fat piggies till 4.45
pm when it is tea.

Ncchange · 06/01/2026 22:44

My JRT about 10am after morning walk but she can ignore it until 3pm and then fed again about 6pm again sometimes not eaten until later.
She does occasionally poo in conservatory but only during the day if in her own for loner than 3hours. No idea why and she won’t explain!

mumoronegirl · 06/01/2026 23:17

Breakfast at 6am and dinner at 6.30pm. Fish skin twist at 8.30pm. Usually two walks a day at 9.30am and 2.30pm. Usually does number twos on first walk but goes in and out the garden as and when needed. Last garden toilet break before bed at 11.30pm.

Serenity45 · 07/01/2026 00:11

4 year old lab 2 meals a day, anywhere between 8-9.30am for breakfast (she likes a lie in if we're not up early at weekends), dinner any time between 5.30 and 6.30pm. Also has a lunchtime carrot when back from the park
