What times do you feed your dogs?

I seem to be getting in a muddle with when to feed ddog which is ridiculous given he’s 6yo πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚

Ive always fed him once a day around 5pm as when I’ve offered him food in the morning he usually wasn’t interested.

Then recently he’s had issues with a chicken allergy and reflux which have meant we’ve changed his food and have to encourage two meals a day.

Im now finding he’s getting up and pooing in the kitchen overnight which he’s never done before.

He’s gets two walks today, one of which is around 8pm for 45 mins or so, ddog is a terrier mix small breed around 7.5kgs.

Anyone got any advice? I wondered about just feeding at breakfast and lunch?

No set times here apart from he has a handful biscuits at 9pm every day. We do breakfast and lunch but that can be anytime from 7-10am and 12-3pm depending on what we’re doing.

Alonglongway · 07/01/2026 06:22

7.30am and 4pm. He gets a last walk at 7pm and occasionally poos on that walk

Zanatdy · 07/01/2026 07:10

Morning around 6am, afternoon 3.30-4pm. He won’t wait any longer than that so if i’m home I feed him at 3.30.

HighStreetOtter · 07/01/2026 07:22

7am and 5pm

bugalugs45 · 07/01/2026 07:52

Ive got the only dog in the world who couldn’t care less about food … i offer his breakfast when we get up, sometimes as early as 4am , other times as late as 8, 80% time he doesn’t eat it .
Then dinner can be 5/6/7 pm, the only time he eats consistently is right before he goes to bed as if he knows that’s it for a while so better get something down me !
waffling I know so no real help, he πŸ’© on walks only again whatever time that is that we go . No real routine here but works for us

SleafordSods · 07/01/2026 08:08

Not the only one, DSis’ DDog is just like this Flowers

Any change to meal time is going to change poo times. They say it takes around 8 hours for food to pass through. My 7 year old border collie is fed lunchtime and dinner time, poo is early morning and lunchtime. He stopped having breakfast at around 2 years old. I think if he’s suffering reflux, more frequent smaller meals may help. My boy can’t have a lot of chicken either.

PolkaDotPorridge · 07/01/2026 08:28

Aw OP he’s very cute!

We have three, they are all fed at 7:30/8am and again at 5pm. One of them is instant pooper and goes straight after each meal.

redboxer321 · 07/01/2026 08:49

Mine gets fed four times a day. Seems to suit her.
But given this @Girliefriendlikespuppies :
Ive always fed him once a day around 5pm as when I’ve offered him food in the morning he usually wasn’t interested.
I wonder if you are feeding him too much?
I'm always surprised how little food mine actually eats. She's nice and lean but not underweight.

Edited to add, the only time mine doesn't want to eat in the morning is when she's got an upset tummy. She then just wants to eat grass. I wonder if he might have some gastric issues?

OrlandointheWilderness · 07/01/2026 08:52

6am and 5pm. Shoot days 5am to allow time for digestion before they get wound up about going out.

What times do you feed your dogs?
EdithStourton · 07/01/2026 09:27

After morning walk and after evening walk. Actual time varies a little from day to day and lot across the year.

On shoot days the worker gets a very small lunch right at the start of lunchtime, so she has enough time to digest it before we're lining out for the first post-lunch drive.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 07/01/2026 09:30

So he was fed earlier ystd and I still came down to πŸ’© this morning πŸ™„ he went twice on the evening walk so not sure what’s going on.

We’ve changed his food to Butternut which he really likes but I’m wondering if that’s making him poo more πŸ€”

Edited

He has a sensitive stomach and recently has been getting reflux, he’s also very fussy and can’t eat chicken so getting the food right is really hard.

He tends to only be hungry after a walk and he’s not greedy, will leave food when full.

8am and 6pm.

you need to speak to the vet if suddenly aged 6 he is pooing inside.

You really dont, OP has said shes now feeding twice a day not once.

I feed 7/8am and then about 3, allows time for the dinner to be registered and thrown out before bed.

caringcarer · 07/01/2026 09:45

I feed my 2 girls at 9am and 9 pm after they walk. They have never poo inside.

I'd change his food if this one makes excessive poo.

GCSEBiostruggles · 07/01/2026 09:50

We do between 7-9 (whenever we wake up straight away) and then at 5pm. It was 6pm but she was pawing and getting grumpy for an hour so we moved it up and it worked.

The only time she pooed in the kitchen was when we were looking after another dog. I don't know why it happened but wondered if you've had another dog about that has put them on edge or something?

I'd try some products to help with reflux - lots out there.
Might need something from the vet if he doesn't improve with other products.
Mine had Buscopan as recommended by the vet but I'd check with yours first.
I'd also switch him from BB too - it can be high in fat.
I'd try a white fish based diet. Some warm white fish fillets and a tablespoon of sweet potato and some digestive aids, slippery elm, probiotics etc. It's not a good enough diet for the long term but might help you find some answers.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 07/01/2026 11:14

Thanks @redboxer321ive really struggled with finding a suitable food for him, I do intermittently make him homemade food so I might go back to that. I think the BB is probably the cause but that’s annoying as I thought I’d finally found something or liked that didn’t play his allergies/reflux up.

I will speak to the vet as well, thanks.

Breakfast is 0800-0900 ish
Dinner is 1700-1800 ish

She just has her food split between the meals to keep her topped up.

I'd expect less poop out of a dog on BN because it genuinely decent quality so most of it will be used up so less to poop out.

redboxer321 · 07/01/2026 11:22

Does he eat grass @Girliefriendlikespuppies?

mondaytosunday · 07/01/2026 11:27

I always fed mine once around 4.30pm when the kids got home from school. Now as oldies (since about 12/13, last one is 14 now) I have them breakfast about 7.30 and dinner which has crept a bit earlier to 3.30. I am also have the occasional poo overnight but I think that’s more to be old and having some digestive issues. Never did it at your dogs age. Last time out is just to the garden about midnight.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 15/01/2026 21:59

Just an update incase anyone is interested, I stopped the butternut box for a few days and the overnight poo stopped as well, so this was a food issue rather than a timing issue.

Hes now having a very small amount of BB (to use it up) with freeze dried raw at lunchtime and a handful of kibble at 5pm ish. He won’t eat in the mornings so it’s pointless offering him breakfast.

Whoever said the BB must be a bit rich for him was right. Once it’s run out I’ll go back to making him food and mixing with a bit of freeze dried or kibble.
