K woke up around 5am for a wee the first night home, then went back to sleep until 8. And has been happy to sleep until I get up since day 2.
P needed letting out for a wee at 3am for months and was awake at 6am.
But P was house trained during the day in two weeks. And K wasn't reliable until 4 months old.
They were both treated exactly the same, so I think it's just the luck of the draw.

Let sleeping puppies lie would be my philosophy. So don’t wake them up, they will wake you up if they need anything!

Appreciate everyone’s different though and so is every puppy.

Bordercollierun · 01/01/2026 07:29

Hope everyone had a lovely new year.

Our pup has been doing better. Things are settling a little. I’ve booked 2 sets of training classes to start the second week of January and my older dog is tolerating the puppy more. I would say house training is only about 60% there but better than it was!

Last night I let her out for a wee at 7:30 and someone set a massive firework off in the estate next door. She came running in yelping and now I’m worried that she’s going to be terrified for life! She doesn’t want to go outside at all this morning 😫 is there anything I can do about it now?

NorwichMom · 01/01/2026 07:39

@Bordercollierun thats a shame about the firework. Maybe take her out and stay with her for reassurance for a while? She’ll soon forget. Someone also said to me about playing fireworks YouTube videos to get them used to the sound while young.

Thats a good idea I’ll give that a go! She seemed unfazed but it was so loud even my older bombproof dog came running in. Hopefully hasn’t traumatised her too much

sunshineandkindle · 01/01/2026 11:03

And we have her!! Eek!

I would go out with her and take some really high value treats out there like ham or cheese.

@NorwichMom I feel for you about the biting. If you look back down this chat, you will probably see my despair! Frankly, Merry is lucky she made it to adolescence, she was a horror. I started to imagine she actually hated me. There are some good videos on YouTube and tick-tock to help with settle training, I also recommend using a house-line. Cow ears also helped settle her in the evenings. Sometimes. Once her big teeth were all through it petered out.

I also never woke my pups for night-time wees. Mind you, I didn’t crate train either, she slept in her own bed in our room, or more often, under our bed, and she slept through from day 1. Same with our other dog.

Struckbylightning · 01/01/2026 13:35

I fucking HATE fireworks. It was like the Somme round here last night, and Merry was freaking out. We ended up playing mad catch and chase games with her noisiest toys to try to keep her distracted. 1 am is waaay past my bedtime!

Nella68 · 01/01/2026 13:55

We’re staying at relatives who live in a small market town. Last night there was about 6 fireworks in total. Such a change from where we live on the edge of Birmingham where fireworks have been going off since October, at all hours of the day and night. Apparently it’s drug dealers signalling a drop.

@sunshineandkindle we need a puppy pic!

My nephew has a German shepherd who is about a year older than Midge and they spent the day ‘boxing’ in the garden. The second day they had calmed down enough to relax, but it did make me think twice about having another dog, but I guess when they are used to each other they don’t feel the need to play constantly.

sunshineandkindle · 01/01/2026 15:25

here she is, if it uploads! She has had 4 accidents so far !

Thanks. I daren’t use cow ears as I have an older dog who is obsessed with them and worried about it causing a fight. Puppy has discovered the log pile for the log burner. I’m not sure if chewing logs is ok for them or not?? Keeps him quiet 😁

I don't know. Probably no worse than a puppy being obsessed with chewing sticks which my last one was.

Welcome to the world of your puppy doing things daily that you wonder if it's going to harm them.

Hmm, Google says no, risk of internal and mouth damage. So another thing I have to remove from him 🤣

NorwichMom · 01/01/2026 15:40

Ok, have ordered a pack of wood chewing sticks. Did not know that was a thing. He has yak cheese puppy bones and isn’t very interested in those.

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 01/01/2026 20:58

Happy new year everyone! Check out Rory’s new trick, waiting with a biscuit on his head til he’s told he can have it, what a good boy 🥰.

First night question... she won't stay in her crate and keeps walking out. We tried closing the side but she whined. What do we do?!!
It is for her to sleep upstairs with us.

SpanielsGalore · 01/01/2026 21:47

Either someone sleeps downstairs with her to keep her company or you take her upstairs with you.
Mine slept in a cage next to the bed, so I could talk to them and stroke them to help them settle. It also meant I could hear them if they woke up during the night, needing a wee.

spartanrunnergirl · 02/01/2026 09:57

Junior Spartan arrived yesterday and is a delight! I decided to crate train for a couple of weeks in the end after chatting it through with the breeder. He slept in his crate next to my bed and told me he needed to go to the toilet twice in the night. Such a good boy :)

he has got very runny stools this morning, and a bit of red blood in it. I’m taking him to the vet this afternoon and he is full of beans otherwise. Also fully vaccinated. My previous dog had the same when a new pup, is it common?

Beautiful pup @spartanrunnergirl . It sounds as if his first night was pretty good.

Sorry, can't advise re the tummy upset, but the vet check should be able to reassure you.
