Does anyone else’s dog attack the telly when animals are on?

Shmoigel · 29/08/2025 14:53

I think it might be my labradoodle being thick as mince!
everyone he spots a dog on the telly he immediately goes and tries to boop my telly with his nose whilst barking!

It’s now turned into other animals such as a giraffe, tortoise and hyenas!

If you pause the telly he looks dejected but starts attacking again when he sees it moving again.

Tips to stop it are welcome x

Only one of mine does this. No idea why, I have many, but for her? Animals on the TV produces rage! We generally ignore her. Despite her best endeavours to be our “pack leader” the rest of our dogs ignore her too when she does it. Very different to when they perceive an actual threat!
We ignore her for 10-20 seconds, then give her the “bed” command. She slinks off and it’s becoming less and and less.

Yes my dog does this, it infuriates him if he thinks squirrels or other small furries are ‘hiding’ behind the TV!

cobrakaieaglefang · 29/08/2025 20:38

Mine will watch tv, particularly if there's dogs, she's quite happy to watch Hudson and Rex! 🤣 Doesn't bark at all at tv.
Love the description as 'thick as mince' that made me laugh. 😂

MotherofPufflings · 29/08/2025 20:44

Yes, also fascinated by aliens in Star Wars etc

PiggyPigalle · 29/08/2025 21:23

Yes, knocked it clean off its stand when a cartoon Bulldog in a Union Flag came on.
He's also terrified of circles on the screen. There's a Disney advert with a character who has huge round eyes. He whimpers in fear. Wish we knew what happened to him in his previous homes.
Getting better though.

My rescue was a nightmare with it. To be fair he was a nightmare with everything - leaves, washing machine, lawnmower, cars ...

bagheera92 · 29/08/2025 21:40

Yes my dog also goes berserk when rob rinder comes on …

Twiglets1 · 31/08/2025 10:18

The puppy I was raising for Guide dogs used to run up to the TV barking when horses came on.
Funnily enough he was fine with actual real life horses he just didn’t like them on TV 😂

Serpentstooth · 31/08/2025 10:22

Yes, even cartoon animals.

Serpentstooth · 31/08/2025 10:22

Yes, even cartoon animals.

Sweetleftfood · 01/09/2025 11:45

My terrier has never ever bothered with the TV it's like he can't even see it. My SIL's labradoodle on the other hand, she literally cannot watch anything with animals in it as he goes ballistic. Maybe a doodle thing

YorkshireFelix · 01/09/2025 14:48

My spaniel watches animals on the telly and will try and get them. He also follows the football and tries to catch it! When we had Crufts on he kept looking behind the tv trying to see if the dogs were there 😂

tealady · 31/10/2025 22:23

Yes mine goes crazy at any animals on TV including cartoons, but is worse with collies and sheep. She charges at the TV, jumping up and barking like crazy.

I saw a tip from the Graeme Hall (the dog father) which is that you should calmly stand between the dog and the TV, facing your dog and say 'No' but very calmly. You mustn't be reactive or shouty yourself because that just reinforces their belief something dangerous is happening.

It does seem to work when I do this but it doesn't stop her from doing it next time she sees something. Mostly I can't be bothered because its so annoying to keep getting up every time something appears on TV (lazy I know!)

BauhausOfEliott · 01/11/2025 00:48

One of the dogs I grew up with used to go mad if she saw dogs or horses on the telly. When we had a camcorder in the 90s, she even barked at the video we’d taken of her.

mondaytosunday · 01/11/2025 01:16

My rather less than intelligent dog does bark at another dog or some animals on tv. My much smarter dog never did.

ilovepixie · 01/11/2025 01:21

My dog looks under the TV for the animals

MsSmartShoes · 01/11/2025 01:49

My dog doesn’t react to visuals - but if there an owl call in TV (which is surprisingly a common thing in signalling night time in the countryside) - she goes mental. We’ve banned Midsommer Murders.

MyNameIsAlexDrake · 01/11/2025 02:00

My dog loves a nature programme and was totally invested in the real action Lion King movie, she avidly watched the whole thing!

SammyScrounge · 01/11/2025 02:41

My cat likes to watch the snooker.

liveforsummer · 01/11/2025 06:53

My terrier doesn’t pay any attention to the tv, a Labrador I used to live with used to chase the race horses across the screen of the tv then stand looking confused around the side of the tv. One dog is incredibly clever and the other not so much. I’ll let you decide which is which 😆

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 01/11/2025 06:56

We had to stop watching nature programmes. Period dramas with horses and carriages were a challenge too. Dopey dog. He’d look over his shoulder at us, bemused at our lack of concern about the TV animals.

solvendie · 08/11/2025 19:12

Oh yes….we have a very stupid GR who has a problem with telly dogs, cows, horses and giraffes - real or cartoon 🙄

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/11/2025 19:21

My Jack Russell barks at dogs, bears and lions on TV then when they disappear looks at you with a look that says 'I got rid of them'. She not particularly bothered with sheep, cows or horses.

CrushingOnRubies · 09/11/2025 13:57

Used to but stopped thankfully. Now likes to watch nature documentary. Although she did bark at the spaniel who is in the new Smyths Christmas advert. But she might have just been pestering me for the toys.

FastFood · 09/11/2025 19:31

Mine has no problem with TV (even barking) but he reacts to his own reflection in a mirror, a window etc, never had a dog that did that, but its really annoying.
