Whoodle

Does anyone on here have a Wheaten cross Poodle? I really wanted a Soft Coated Wheaten but after a lot of research/thought it’s the Whoodle we have decided on. Issue is the only reputable breeder I can find is in the US. Anyone managed to find one in the UK? Many thanks!

No reputable breeders condone crossbreeds which is why you will not find one in the UK. Any reason you don't want the original breed?

jeaux90 · 18/08/2025 12:09

These are way more common in the US. Like Schnoodles are. There are reputable breeders in the UK of Golden Doodles for example or Cava crosses. I’m not ruling about a Wheaten. If I can’t get a Whoodle (I won’t fly one in from the US like I’ve seen other people have) I’ll go back to the drawing board, reconsider the shortlist.

Yes, I'm familiar with the designer breed trend in the US. You can get any 'oodle' your heart desires.

Crosses are not reputable, regardless of the country, for a variety of reasons.

Wheatens are very cute. Have you had a terrier before? They are very different to poodles who are not terriers.

Have you decided which characteristics you want or prefer to not have?

LandSharksAnonymous · 18/08/2025 12:42

@FluffyWabbit on this we are agreed (should we celebrate with tea and cake?)!

There are hardly any poodle crosses from 'reputable breeders' @jeaux90 and those breeders that are out there, are not breeding healthy stock.

There are two good reasons to avoid these designer doodles (amongst a heap of other good reasons)

  • The sire and dam are never the healthiest examples of their pedigree breeds. Why? Because those of us (and I include myself in this) who breed our breed, and try to be ethical, breed them to make the breed better. I would never, in a million years, breed my boy with a poodle to make a GoldenDoodle, even though his health scores are about the best I've seen. So, you're already starting from less than ideal breeding stock tbh. Why would you want anything less than perfection?
  • You could, and people very often do, end up with the worst breed traits in the two pedigrees. In Cockerpoos, this often means high energy, high intelligent (moreso than most owners), neurotic, nervous and anxious.

What is it about the poodle you don't like? So often people say that they want a doodle cross, but really...they want a poodle, they just think they're odd looking.

I'd be incredibly interested to know who these reputable Golden-Doodle breeders are...

Really interesting perspectives thank you. I wanted a breed originally and was mainly looking at low shedding dogs, Portuguese water dog, Wheaten etc plus medium size over ones that I also liked, Maltese etc. I was kind of persuaded on the cross breed situation but perhaps I need to go back to the original short list.
Medium sized
Low shedding (I have asthma)
Family/sociable
Doesn’t need over 1 hour a day walking.

Have you tried this quiz for some guidance: https://www.akc.org/breed-selector-tool/

Best Dog Breed for Me and My Family? - American Kennel Club

jeaux90 · 18/08/2025 17:31

I did do that quiz before and Barbet came out on top. I know literally nothing about them though.

Low shedding is as low shedding does, but jaysus I can't begin to imagine the coat care in between clips for a Wheaten x Poodle. 😂

FluffyWabbit · 18/08/2025 17:39

Wow, I wasn't aware of that breed! Apparently, very rare!

So, they kind of resemble a poodle in fur type! Maybe you're destined for the poodle ha

I have had one and they are highly affectionate, intelligent, etc

Honestly, I can't think of anything bad to say about them. They are adorable, too.

jeaux90 · 18/08/2025 18:03

@FluffyWabbit my sister in the US has a giant Poodle cross Schnauzer who is absolutely adorable but a massive clown so not against have a Poodle just never really considered it. And yes Barbet I can only find 8 breeders in the UK so quite rare. Thing is we have a stream at the bottom of the garden which put me off the Portuguese water dog. I’m not that keen on wet pooch 365 days a year 🤣

Campingisnexttogodliness · 18/08/2025 18:14

In the Olde Days you would be looking for a mongrel. Gained for 20 quid from a neighbour..
Now the word breeder is used which adds on £££££
Quite a racket imo.

IhateMondaymornings · 18/08/2025 20:58

You have described a Wheaten. They don’t shed, family friendly needing an hour walk a day. But their coat needs a lot of care and attention and if you aren’t prepared to put in the hard graft as you won’t be able to take it to the groomers every 6 weeks to get it shaved then you will have an unhappy dog. You must brush it every day until it reaches it’s final coat when you leave it for a few days.

MuffinsAreJustCakesAtBreakfast · 18/08/2025 21:20

I have a poodle and my neighbour has a nine month old Wheaten.

Can definitely say my poodle's fur is a lot less hassle.

and no we will not be making bloody Whoodles wtf 🤦🏼‍♀️

”Whoodle” 🙄 ffs. Please don’t.

jeaux90 · 19/08/2025 13:44

@IhateMondaymorningsno all good with coat care, and happy clip myself.
Maybe a Wheaten is the answer (FFS I keep going round in circles)

I have a Wheaten. I don't really see what is to gain by crossing with a poodle to be honest. My boy is fab.

My 2 miniature poodles tick all these boxes! I’ve had cairns and labradors in the past. The non shedding is a deal breaker for me as husband also asthmatic. One of mine is from poodle rescue and we’ve had him 9 years now, since he was 10 months old.

I’m always surprised on these “designer dog” threads when people want poodle crosses for all the positive benefits that the poodle side of the equation brings to the table. Yet nobody seems inclined to consider an actual poodle…why is that do you think?

I think poodles still have the reputation of being “frou frou” dogs with silly haircuts kept by old ladies, sadly.

It’s a shame because every poodle I’ve ever met has been absolutely lovely.

Fantastic!! So pleased you've gone for a Wheaten. Lovely little jolly things!

They are fab dogs. Be sure to contact the breed club to find a breeder. Never shop online.

Have done that, they offer a meet situation too so you can be sure they are the right dog before you go down that path.
