Does anyone on here have a Wheaten cross Poodle? I really wanted a Soft Coated Wheaten but after a lot of research/thought it’s the Whoodle we have decided on. Issue is the only reputable breeder I can find is in the US. Anyone managed to find one in the UK? Many thanks!

They’re gorgeous but I’ve only seen them in Canada. I find perspective interesting as I’d have thought that, within reason, 2 healthy dogs cross bred can be better than breeding lines being too close. I’ve had a kc reg cocker and also a sprocker (mum half springer and half cocker, dad cocker). The cross bred dog is the healthier one. Clearly that’s anecdotal but I don’t think it’s a black and white as ooodle haters believe.

In France, the small poodle is a bit of a stereotype. Back in the day, they were very popular in Paris for the ladies who ran porter lodges (concierges). Most buildings in Paris had one. It is rarer now but far more prevalent than in London say. And then you had the old ladies who would take them to restaurants and treat them like babies. This never applied to the bigger version of the breed but the cliche is strong unfortunately for the small ones.

If I were a poodle lover, I would be glad of it. It means the breed is not overly popular and is protected from too much demand. I know nothing about poodles but expect they are not widely inbred unlike pugs, cockers, Dalmatians...

@TeenLifeMum sprockers are bred to work. Oodle mixes are generally bred by backyard breeders just trying to cash in or puppy farmers. They don’t generally care about health testing or finding the right match to make healthy pups.
Plus they are active dogs and often taken on by people who don’t have the experience to deal with the issues that can arise.

Fair enough. I’ve found a lot of oodle breeds are people with family dogs with lovely temperaments who want to experience breeding. I appreciate my experience isn’t fully representative and I don’t go near puppy farms.

@TeenLifeMum we’re not ‘haters’ of the breed, but most of them are unhealthy. They are not bred for health - they are bred because ‘my dog is nice so I should breed,’ which is just stupid, arrogant and greedy. If the oodle breeders put even half the effort into breeding that a good pedigree breeder does, the world would be a better place. But they don’t. I took over a year to find the right stud for my last litter - with the right temperament, health scores, form, pedigree and drive that fit with the sort of litter I wanted. Most ‘oodle’ breeders basically just pluck a dog at random off the street, with little thought to the resulting litter.

Having a ‘lovely dog’ and wanting to ‘experience breeding,’ is just a nice way of saying arrogant fools who have no understanding of how hard breeding and raising a litter right, entails. Frankly it’s pretty instilling to those of us who do make an effort to produce happy, healthy, dogs. It’s basically the equivalent of telling a gymnast that you’re a gymnast because you can do a forward roll.

Just coming back on the thread to say we went to meet Wheatens this morning. Wanted to make sure it was the right decision. The Wheaten org puts you in contact with local reps so you can talk about owning them etc Absolutely smitten.

what a lovely update, @jeaux90 ! hope you will find a good breeder nearby then, so you can get your puppy :)
There's a wheaten in my town as well, just from "passing" in the park, he seems to have a lovely temperament and gets on well with my girl.

I'm another one against the poodle crossbreeds - not so much the dogs themselves, although many of them are hyperactive and neurotic from what I can see. but to me, it just shouts that the owner is someone gullible with no clue about dogs, which then results in very little training of said dogs, exacerbating the behavioural problems.

Gorgeous dogs. Good luck OP.
