What should I put on my new tag for my dog?

We are moving house so need to get a new collar tag. I know not to put her name on it but what should I put on it? On her current one I have my landline and address. I realised my mobile would have been better. I'll be living alone and need to protect my whereabouts but should my dog get lost..

There is a rule of law about this. Look at the kennel club site if you’re in the U.K.

That's interesting, I didn't know that. Thank you.

From memory it should be a contact number and address, there is a law about it. I put just my postcode and mobile number on as neighbours know him if he was ever brought back.

Delphigirl · 18/04/2025 20:55

Legally in the UK you have to put the owners name and address. So my dog tags say Mrs A Boggs, Buckingham Palace, Sw1A 1AA and I also put my mobile phone no as you are likely to be phoned when you are in a field looking for the damn dog, not at home!

myplace · 18/04/2025 21:01

I had an embroidered collar with my phone number and ‘If I’m Lost’.
It was useful the only time he was! He’s a bit skittish and I didn’t think he’d hold still long enough for anyone to read a teeny number on a tag.

So whatever you get, make the number big!

DinoLil · 18/04/2025 21:01

My dog's has my surname, phone number and postcode.

How can there be a rule of law about what you put on your dog tag???

It is the Control of Dogs Order 1992 if you want to have a read.
www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1992/901/contents/made

Delphigirl · 18/04/2025 21:05

Section 3 makes it a criminal offence not to comply with section 2 which contains the requirements (and exceptions - guide dogs etc)

LunaShadow · 18/04/2025 21:12

Legally in UK you MUST have your name and address. This can be Ms XXX House number/Postcode.

I would also suggest your mobile number and I AM CHIPPED on the reverse side.

Although being chipped is a legal requirement, chips can migrate, so if it says I am chipped and it can’t be found scanning between the shoulders, the scanner will be more thorough checking elsewhere.

I came on here to say "this is my dog. I love her."

But I see that this would not comply with the regulations...

Why would there not be? Dog ownership has been covered by law since the 1800s!

You can have that on as well!

LunaShadow · 18/04/2025 21:17

So many don’t realise a dog must wear a collar and tag in public.

HugelyExpensiveCrystalDuck · 18/04/2025 21:18

DinoLil · 18/04/2025 21:01

My dog's has my surname, phone number and postcode.

In think this is the legal requirement. When we did a puppy training class the teacher wouldn’t let you stay if your tag wasn’t legal.

TheFlis · 18/04/2025 21:18

Ours has our surname, postcode, house number and mine and DH’s mobile numbers. It also says “I am microchipped” on the back.

NoWordForFluffy · 18/04/2025 21:19

We have our surname, house number and postcode and our mobile numbers.

MrsBungle · 18/04/2025 21:20

My dogs tag has:

I am spayed
my mobile number
my address

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 18/04/2025 21:21

Lighthearted …..

What should I put on my new tag for my dog?
Pinkdaisie · 18/04/2025 21:21

Don’t put the dogs name on it. It makes it easier for people to steal your dog if they know it’s name.

PigInADuvet · 18/04/2025 21:21

Ours has...

Surname
House number and postcode
2x mobile numbers
Vet number (we're well known there, they'd take him in for us!)
"Microchipped & insured"

all on a tag that is small enough for a 5kg dog. Highly recommend the plastic ones from Identitag UK - engraving on both sides, lots of text on a small tag if needed, light weight, writing doesn't wear off like metal ones can and washes well with collar when caked in mud/fox poo/rotting porpoise carcass and whatever other delights it's seen 🤢
