Vegetarian dog food

Does anyone feed their dog a vegetarian (kibble not home made) diet and have a recommendation for a manufacturer? One that does samples would be great so I can check with my DDog before committing. One that fulfils all needs of vitamins, proteins etc and also supplies toppers if poss?

we’ve tried herbie and wilde and it went down well

Have you considered feeding your dog insect based pet food. Yora does a range. I was looking for alternatives proteins for my cat, because she has allergies and insect food came up as hypoallergenic. It’s more expensive than regular pet food, but it’s maybe more ethical that meat based if that’s your concern.

Yes I think the OP is on a wind up

Possibly but I have seen vegetarian dog foods in Pet at Home so people do feed their dogs this stuff.

I know someone who is strict vegetarian and so is their dog (assuming not through choice 😁) their dog is now well over 10 and has always seemed happy and healthy and very well looked after in other ways.

I wouldn't personally do this though, even if you don't want to support the meat industry yourself could you ask at a local butchers for scraps etc?

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 28/12/2023 11:53

Why do you want to do this?

I'm sorry but I agree with this.

And I'm a vegetarian.

doriangraybutimthepaintingintheattic · 28/12/2023 12:42

Fuck sake. Rehome your dog. If you're willing to put your beliefs in front of your dogs health then you're the worst kind of pet owner.

cariadlet · 28/12/2023 12:45

I wouldn't feed a cat on a vegetarian or vegan diet because they're obligate carnivores but I've known a few people who have fed their dogs a vegetarian diet and the animals have been happy and healthy.

MrsQTip · 28/12/2023 12:46

I think this must be a spoof - nobody is that stupid surely ?

Thejewellershands · 28/12/2023 12:48

I’m hoping this is a joke. If you care about your dog and love them then please don’t feed them a vegetarian diet

HoppingPavlova · 28/12/2023 12:22

Dogs are not vegetarian. If you have a dog it needs to have a carnivorous diet. If you want a vegetarian pet, get one with a naturally vegetarian diet. This is simple.

Dogs can be perfectly healthy & happy on a vegetarian diet.

cats cannot.

karmakameleon · 28/12/2023 12:50

I think people are misinformed. Dogs can survive on a vegetarian diet (and live long and healthy lives). I know people in India who have kept vegetarian dogs and it’s not uncommon there. Cats on the other hand are obligate carnivores and cannot survive on a vegetarian diet.

anothernamechangeagainsndagain · 28/12/2023 12:52

Dogs are omnivorous, whilst there are vegetarian complete foods out there, they will have to be fortified to ensure needs are met. Far better to feed a mixed natural diet (though my thoughts are the same for humans, if you need supplements for your vegan diet it's not meeting your needs). My ddog enjoys snacking on whatever he comes across anyway - earthworms, snails, discarded burgers ...

Irridescantshimmmer · 28/12/2023 12:54

Canines are carnivorous, so forcing your dog on a diet without meat is cruel, the poor creature could eventually become anaemic due to no fault of their own.

AllAroundMyCat · 28/12/2023 12:55

Daft.

@doriangraybutimthepaintingintheattic

fuck sake yourself.

theres nothing wrong with a vegetarian diet for a dog.

& you're the type of person who thinks giving a dog a cheap tin of dog food is better.

MulledWineBeMine · 28/12/2023 12:59

@Citygirlrurallife

if you're genuine, sorry, no I don't know a brand to recommend.

however, it was an obvious call for a bun fight.

As someone with a vegan dog - not through choice but through the strong recommendation of a top dermatologist - I find some of the comments here downright offensive.

OP: Solo Vegatal is one I would recommend. It was the one the dermatogist recommended to me and I've found it to be very good.

Why not? It's perfectly fine for a dog.

margotrose · 28/12/2023 13:05

@TimeToGetSomeFlowers there's a huge difference between a dog requiring a vegetarian diet and putting them on one because it's your preference as the owner.

I walk a dog on a vegetarian diet btw and she's thriving but she's only on it because of severe protein allergies. If she could safely eat meat then she'd get it because she absolutely loves it.

Dogs are designed to eat meat by nature.

redboxer321 · 28/12/2023 13:07

@margotrose OP hasn't said why they are looking for recommendations.

TimeToGetSomeFlowers · 28/12/2023 13:09

@TimeToGetSomeFlowersthere's a huge difference between a dogrequiringa vegetarian diet and putting them on one because it's your preference as the owner.

There isn't any difference at all in terms of outcome. So if it is so awful for a dog that can eat meat ,that someone feels it ok to call it cruel or suggest they cannot be loved, then wtf does that say about my own dog's quality of life?

I see no difference at all when comments like that are used. It's downright ignorant.

I stand corrected - apologies I had no idea it was possible

Pipistrellus · 28/12/2023 13:19

I think it's comparable to a child with allergies or intolerances or ARFID. Of course it's not cruel to give that child a restricted diet, but it wouldn't be okay to do so needlessly.

doriangraybutimthepaintingintheattic · 28/12/2023 13:21

@MulledWineBeMine no I'm not. My dog has no tinned meat but thanks for your opinion written as fact.

There is something wrong with it - same as for us if it has to be supplemented to ensure they get all the relevant vitamins etc. just give them meat.

At least they're getting proper food and not dry veg kibble for eternity
